Purchased vehicle used with this problem. It is believed that the eco feature that cuts out four cylinders is partially responsible for this. Rollers on OEM lifters don't get enough oil and seize, destroying the camshaft.
A significant number of vehicles, including mine, seem to have this happen on cylinder number 5, but we actually had damaged lifters on at least one other cylinder.
I wasn't aware of this known problem and replaced coil pack unnecessarily.
Cost of cam replacement is more about all the seals, gaskets, and stripping of the block than the actual parts and is a two to three-day job if you don't run into trouble.
