The high and low beams are activated by a mechanical hood or something. On low beams, this leaves a straight line where everything below it is lit and everything above it is pitch black. There is no light thrown at all outside this tight headlight pattern and you can't see anything coming up in front of you at times, or to the sides of the vehicle when you are trying to make a turn. It also meant the lights are full bright right in the middle at all times, so if the low beams do happen to go in someone elses' car, they think you have your brights on as well.
