After towing my 20' travel trailer for the very first time, I noticed that the engine braking was doing all the braking and NOT my trailer brakes. In order to have the trailer brakes do their job I had to use the manual slider bar on the trailer brake controller to activate the trailer brakes rather than the actual truck brake pedal. After bringing my truck to 3 different dealerships on seven (7) different occasions, the problem STILL exists. They all said there must be a problem with my trailer. After the seventh time of hearing this crap, I went home, grabbed my trailer and headed back to the dealership where we did a comparison between my truck and a new truck they had on the lot. Low and behold, it was discovered that there was NOT a problem with my trailer!!!
After working with the Ford "engineers", the trailer brakes only engage upon very heavy braking and only about 50% of the time under normal braking. When the trailer brakes do not engage as they are supposed to, the engine braking kicks in and I watch my engine RPMs jump up to 4,500 trying to get everything stopped. Not even the so-called Ford "engineers" know what the hell is going on and are trying to convince me that everything is "just fine". If I have to run my gain maxed out at 10 to sometimes engage the trailer brakes with my truck brake pedal but the manual slider will lock up the trailer brakes at a gain setting of only 5, does this sound "just fine" to you?
