The coil springs rusted out and according to the auto shop that replaced them, they just about fell off in the mechanic's hand when touched. I did see part of the coil that, indeed, was a completely rusted chunk of metal in the shape of a C, as it was only part of it that they showed me. I believe it took about 4 hours to get it fixed.
