Mazdaspeeds around this year range are susceptible to stretched timing chains resulting in an audible clanking noise near the cam case cover. This has something to do with the vvt actuator failing. Mazda is aware of this problem and offers a 7 year/100000 mile extended service plan in which they will replace the timing chain and actuator with heat treated parts. This solved the issue for about 20,000 miles until the issue arose once again. Now I am currently living with the noise. The timing chain is just loose enough to where it hits off the cam case cover but not loose enough to cause any problems.
