CAR HAD CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON, THROWING P0171 FOR LEAN BANK 1 ISSUE. AFTER CHECKING UNDER HOOD NOTED THAT BREATHER HOSE COMING FROM OIL FILTER HOUSING TO INTAKE WAS 17% GONE. THE CORRUGATED HOSE HAD ROTTED SO BAD DUE TO POOR MATERIAL, THE ONLY PART LEFT WAS ATTACHED WITH CLAMP ON BOTH ENDS BUT ENTIRE HOSE FROM THE LOCATION WAS GONE CAUSING WIDE OPEN LEAK TO OIL FILTER HOUSING. REPLACED HOSE AND CODE STILL CAME UP.

NOTICED CHECKING THAT MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR WAS BAD REPLACED IT AND BOOM CODE CAME UP AGAIN. NOW HAVE OIL FILTER HOUSING AS POSSIBLE ISSUE, MAP SENSOR OR OTHER VACUUM LEAK.

NEEDLESS TO SAY I HAVE READ THAT OIL FILTER HOUSING WAS ON RECALL ALONG WITH THE BREATHER HOSE ON CERTAIN VEHICLES OR MODELS BUT NOT ON OUR 2006 VOLVO S40. IF YOU LOOK UP VEHICLES THEY DECLARED A RECALL YOU WILL FIND THE PART IF NOT IDENTICAL VERY VERY SIMILAR, WHICH IN MY EYES IS A LOAD OF CRAP. YOU READ THE SAME EXACT ISSUES WITH NON RECALLED VOLVOS AS WITH RECALLED VOLVOS BUT OURS ARE A DIFFERENT ISSUE FOR SOME REASON.

I LIKED CAR IF NOT FOR MILDEW FROM SUNROOF LEAK IN MY OTHER COMPLAINT OR ACTUALLY REALIZING EVERY THING YOU WORK ON IS BACKWARDS OR UPSIDE DOWN COMPARED TO OTHER VEHICLES. SENSOR CLIPS ARE TUCKED IN BETWEEN 3 HOSES INSTEAD OF ON TOP, NOT ORDINARY OIL FILTER OR HOUSING WHICH IN LONG RUN CAUSES CAR TO RUN DIRTIER IN MY OPINION THAN REGULAR GAS VEHICLES.

VOLVO I AM SERIOUSLY DISAPPOINTED IN DESIGN EFFORTS AND MATERIALS

I take the car in, and the mechanic says it's this. I get THAT fixed, and then a few weeks later the check engine light is back on.
