TLX SH-AWD 6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 5,700 miles

TLX SH-AWD 9 Speed. I was driving on the expressway and needed to change lanes quickly. I sharply depressed the gas peddle and the engine revved very quickly to over 6000 rpm but the car did not increase speed. It seemed like it had "gone into neutral" Once I took my foot off the gas, the car again engaged into gear. I was in Econ mode at the time the incident occurred. Given traffic at the time, it wasn't a big deal but on a two lane highway, while attempting to pass, it could have been a huge problem. This is the one and only time the incident occurred. The car has had the most recent transmission recall update.

Update from Feb 3, 2016: Acura could not replicate the exact problem but they indicated that while in 9th gear (65 mph) and econ mode and most probably in VCM mode, if one suddenly hits the gas, to engage passing gear, the transmission has to work around all the fuel saving modes and get the car in a lower passing gear. This may take a bit of time which looks to the driver as stumbling of the transmission, high engine rev momentarily, while a gear is chosen. They say it is unlikely it was actually in neutral gear but it may well have felt like it. Using the paddle shifter to drop the transmission by one gear (out of 9th) before accelerating may help. Or changing the IDS setting to Sport, before accelerating. It is not a problem with the transmission, says Acura.

TLX SH-AWD 3.5L V9

Brand new Acura 2015 TLX 9-speed transmission jerks significantly during brakes and stop/go situations. The RPM swings wildly up and down. Sometimes the transmission shifts unexpectedly during a normal flat road driving.

It seems like the new Acura TLX is having issues with it’s ZF 9-speed transmission. It hesitates and shifts hard going from 2nd to 3rd gear. A lot of TLX owners are upset about this and there is currently a 9-page thread on Acurazine about this issue. You can learn more about this issue from the thread:

http://acurazine.com/forums/problems-fixes-420/9at-hard-shift-1-2-2-3-a-919230/

This same ZF 9-speed transmission is also used by the 2014 Range Rover Evoque, the 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokees, and the 2015 Chrysler 200s. These vehicles are also having transmission issues.

Some TLX owners have found a workaround for this issue. However, many owners feel that they shouldn’t have to employ a workaround for a car that can cost up to $45,000. Here’s the link for the workaround thread:

http://acurazine.com/forums/problems-fixes-420/my-workaround-9at-hard-shift-932531/

Unfortunately, Acura has not even acknowledged this issue. Several owners have taken their TLX to the dealer only to be told that there is no problem.

Hard shifts from 1/2 and 2/3. Downshift to first when coming to a stop lunges forward. RPMs jumps from 1000 to 1500 after it sits overnight or several hours. When you do take it out of park, you better have heavy pressure on the brake because it wants to take off due to the high RPMs.
