High pressure fuel pump failed while BMW dealership mechanic was test-driving car after replacing two tires/oil change/replacing fuel filter/performing fix for recall of egr cooler part; per the service manager at the dealership, metal particles were subsequently found in the quantity control valve, necessitating complete replacement of fuel system. There is a known recall for year, make and model of my car (2014 BMW 328d) for the fuel pump, but apparently my VIN number is not falling under the recall. This issue appears identical to the issue the recall was issued for other cars with this same year/make/model. I have not performed the repair as they are quoting about $17,000 for the fix. There were no warning lights, messages or symptoms of the problem prior to this issue. In addition, they indicated I needed a new o-ring part for the fuel filter they were replacing as it was the wrong part, but they said it had nothing to do with the fuel pump. (Service said the o-ring continued to hold and was working as normal, and they recommended putting the correct by part number o-ring in its place so the fuel filter would not have come unsecured from its fitting in the future. They said the issue with the vehicle did not come from the o-ring/fuel filter; it is by their determination based upon the metal shavings in the quantity control valve, caused because the high pressure pump came apart internally and contaminated your fueling system. They said this is due to age.) They indicated that had the pump failed while I was on the highway or traveling I and/or others could have been seriously injured or killed. No one else has inspected the car at this point and it remains at the dealership for now.

ISSUE: HPFP High Pressure Fuel Pump is failing resulting in an increasing deposit of metallic shavings within the pump housing and a corresponding deviation in the measured fuel rail pressure. SAFETY: The vehicle will code and shut down while you are driving. BMW DEALERSHIP: Replaced items other then the root cause HPFP. A new fuel rail and sensors installed at my expense because of dealership decision. 1,000 miles after repair at dealership, codes came back for low pressure and high pressure faults. Warning lamps on and car shut offs while driving. Make and model of car with the same issues but VIN is not on this recall? NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V586000

I suffered a breakdown in my 2014 BMW 328d on 26 Oct 21 with a drive train malfunction warning. Vehicle stalled and was unable to be restarted. Vehicle was towed to local repair shop, International Auto Specialist, located in Fredericksburg, VA, and diagnosed as a high pressure fuel pump failure and calling for the entire replacement of the vehicles fuel system. At the recommendation of my local repair shop, the vehicle was then towed 59 miles to the closest BMW dealership, BMW Fairfax, VA, for repair. The safety issue I have is that a recall notice (Recall Campaign #21V-586) was issued by BMW North America in September 2021 for High Pressure Fuel Pump failures affecting 2014-2018 BMW diesel engine vehicles ranging from 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3 SAV, and X5 SAV models. I never received a recall notice for this vehicle, or my 2015 BMW X5d SAV, and have been told by BMW Fairfax, VA, and BMW Corporate that my high pressure fuel pump only carries an extended 10-year, 120,000 warranty, even through both vehicles falls within the parameters of the open recall notice issued by BMW North America. Further, BMW Fairfax, VA has informed me that all other parts damaged by the High Pressure Fuel Pump failure are not covered by the extended warranty and any cost associated with additional repairs is the customers responsibility, regardless of the fact that they will only replace the defective part at the time of failure and not before. How can BMW North America issue a recall notice for a specific group of vehicles, but not include all vehicles that fall within the specifications associated to the recall? This part failure occurred while I was driving in heavy traffic and I was fortunate it did not cause series bodily harm to myself or others. I respectfully request you investigate the situation to determine BMW's liability and inept handling of this recall in order to prevent others from being harmed. Documentation can be provided if necessary. Thank you.

In July 2021 I was driving on a residential street when my vehicle experienced loss of power. The vehicle shutdown and stopped in the middle of the road. Mechanic found metal particles in fuel system that may have been cause by fuel pump failure. It was reported to insurance company. The fuel system was replaced but vehicle continues to have issues with leaks etc.

While on a red light we were at a dead stop. As the light turned green to turn right I accelerated the gas pedal and the car stalled out in the middle of the road while traffic was flowing. Had to push the car out of the road and had to get the car towed home. Now the car doesn-€™t turn on it just cranks over.

On my drive home I noticed a strong smell of dizel fuel.Stoped as soon as it was possible. Noticed a fuel was poring to the ground under my engine. Shut it down and call AAA. At the BMW dealership repair shop they found a broken fuel supply line that was rubbing against the vacuum pipe.My car was covered with fuel from engine to a trunk to everything under including muffler, soaking wet weals and tires, I lost a half tank of fuel in about 5 minutes. It's scare me a lot, I think it was a miracle it did not catch a fire on 93 degree day, my wife will never sit in this car again.I will feel guilty if I will sell this car to somebody else.Don't know what to do now. What kind of design it is" How fuel line can constantly rub something else" This car just over 70000 miles, garage kept, never been in any accidents, well maintain.

I have two issues with my 2014 BMW 328D. First, on several occasions while backing up into my driveway on reverse the transmission shifts unexpectedly into neutral. I have to put it into "D" and drive the car forward before the transmission engages again into reverse. The problem is intermittent and occurs about once a month and only while putting the gear in reverse. The second issue is that my vehicle recently failed the ca emissions test. On 11/23/2021 I took the vehicle to BMW of el cajon for an inspection. The dealer diagnosed a problem with the 4 diesel injectors as faulty and issued a repair estimate. After online research on your site NHTSA.gov, I found that BMW had issued a limited extended warranty of 10 years or 120K miles for the diesel injectors but only for model years 2015-2016, or production date of 7/2014 to 6/2016. My vehicle was produced on 08/2013. I am asking the NHTSA to please investigate why my vehicle's model year/production date was not included in the limited warranty extension considering that is the same production model (F30), and engine (N47T) as those covered in the extended warranty, and is having the same diesel injectors problem. For reference BMW's sib is 01 09 19 issued on 10-11-2019.

I have a 2014 328D F31 three weeks ago while turning into a parking spot at a grocery store parking lot at low speed, my 328D shifted to P mid turn, and the engine shut off. Upon trying to restart it, it would crank but not turn over. (thankfully, I was in a parking lot and going at slow speed - and not on the interstate). We had to manually get it shifted into neutral to be able to push it into a parking spot. Upon further inspection, it was determined that the high pressure fuel pump has failed. (thankfully it doesn't appear to be disintegrated as some others have reported). All open recalls have been repaired. This vehicle has been very well maintained, and great efforts have been taken to ensure only quality, fresh diesel has been pumped in the car. BMW has offered an extended warranty for this (not cheap) part. However, it's only up to 10 years or 120,000 miles, and my vehicle is at 128,000. I am incredibly grateful that no one was hurt, injured, or worse in this incident. But given the high frequency of this happening amongst other 328D owners, and the safety implications (many times on the interstate), I would expect that BMW would recall this vehicle and get these parts replaced before anything worse happens. It happened quickly and suddenly with no prior performance warnings, codes, or lights. In fact when running a foxwell schwaben 14020sch scanner, no codes are being returned. An additional safety concern of course is that this problem is not preventable with traditional diagnostics. My google research shows the Bosch fuel pump was recalled in other models, but the recall exempted the diesel variants. I can't imagine an item prone to failure, that's not listed on a replacement schedule. There are multiple lawsuits out there on the Bosch CP4 fuel pumps. (however CP4.2 seems to be more reliable than the CP4.1).

I got a cel and dropped it off at the dealer. They said it was to the active scr tank. After research I found out a lot of BMW vehicles have the item fail. The 328D is not on the list of extended warranties. Are there many 328D's that fail?

My vehicle currently has an egr problem but for some reason isn't covered under the recall... sometimes my front passenger door will not open! like at all! I will have to hit the unlock button multiple times before I can open the door. My def was filled with the correct fluid at the appropriate time about 1K miles ago. Suddenly as I'm driving down the road a light appeared that says incorrect fluid added no start after xxx miles. Now vehicle will no longer start. After searching the web others have had this issue connected to nox sensor. Taking to shop hopefully covered since nox sensor was just replaced from a recall.

Vehicle cruising at 70mph on the freeway when the car stalled out with no warning. It simply went into neutral and cut the engine, rendering the vehicle hard to control since power steering and braking were not working. The car broke down again without warning on a city surface street with a speed limit of 45mph. Independent mechanic diagnosed that the high pressure fuel pump imploded, sending metal throughout the entire fuel system. Again there was no warning and braking/steering were affected.

My 2014 surged automatically in a parking lot and the brakes failed repeatedly: It took me over the 4" cement parking lot stopper and into a wall! this was the only way the vehicle would stop! iwill say that just before I had backed out very slowly as I was in a parking lot. I hit somethig, put my foot on the brake, then put car in drive to pull a few feet back into the parking spot. I used very little gas, not necessary of course. BMW engineers examined it and found no error according to their three standard tests. I was told that their tests "may not record something, " "could not duplicate my concerns, " and that it would take "a more severe impact to record something." Nothing could be tested or recorded for speeds under 35 miles per hour. I got a concussion and the incident cost $ 17,000 (plus loss of car value). BMW did nothing for me so I am out of a BMW for good. I had just put the car in drive to pull back into the parking space I was in. In all fairness I did hit something, stopped, foot on brake put it in drive. There is no way it outght to have surged out of control or failed to stop. I was going less than 5 mph. BMW will do nothing for me except give me a courtesy discount on a different BMW once I've purchased it. Their dealers have offered me less than competitors. I won't buy another one. ## VIN passed ## BMW 328I2014 ##
