CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2000 Chevy Astro Van has a solid reputation with very low complaint rates. The only problem now is finding one with low miles.

Not only is the 2000 Astro Van reliable, but since they were built on a truck powertrain, they can tow 5,500/5,000 lbs (RWD/AWD) -- almost double what other minivans can.

The Chevy Astro is mechanically identical to the GMC Safari.

Contact stated while driving, the vehicle stalled. When this happened there were no brakes. There were no warnings before the stalling, it happened after the vehicle was parked for approximately 10-15 minutes. This did not happen every time the engine was turned off. The service dealer could not duplicate the problem, but they did inform the contact that this specific model year had intermittent stalling problem. The vehicle did not have braking capability. There was file number 1-34-55-39614 with the local Chevrolet dealer. Updated 02/07/06.

Vehicle stalls when traveling! almost crashed with children in vehicle because of complete operational failure! vehicle restarts, however may stall at any time! I took vehicle to attendant shop as well as a Chevy shop and they both failed to find the cause. This is extremely dangerous and the problem must be dealt with accordingly.

While driving under 20 mph engine would die out without warning. Took vehicle to dealership at least 3 different times. Mechanic replaced the computer chip & the water pump. Placed vehicle on board monitor for a week, but nothing registered. Mechanic drove it & it did stutter.
