Timing belt broke and destroyed engine. Local Chevy dealer says $4500.00 to replace engine.47000 miles on this car.It had all services, oil change every 3000 miles. My daughter drove it like a Sunday school teacher. If Chevy was aware there was a problem but did not order a recall there should be compensation of some sort.Had to dump the car and got only 450.00 for trade.GM should man up and take care of the problem.

I thought I was upset over the thermostat housing exploding, but this.... this just sealed the deal. Apparently GM placed a very quite and not so public "suggestion" to Aveo owners, which apparently I missed, saying that if you took your car in before the warranty was up, or 60,000 miles, they would pay for a new timing belt, just the belt though. Not a full recall, just a lil letter. Well like I mentioned, I didn't get one, now I am driving to work and I hear the most awful noise come exploding from my engine. 12 bent valve stems, a bent pushrod, and a damaged piston head late I told the mechanic to keep the P.O.S. because I was done. GM can go die, and I wouldn't have an issue, where is our bailout GM, when do you help your customers? Buying a new Ford and hoping to God at least one American company is worth supporting. =(

Aveo LS ? 1.6L 4-cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 73,000 miles

It's a Daewoo. It's Korean. I don't know if it's any better now, but I had a Ford made in Korea (I think Kia) that certainly was not problem-free. I begged my son not to give this car to his son. I own it, but the grandson uses it. I thought a Toyota or a Ford would be better. But my son, just like his dad, is a trifle pig headed, so we got the Aveo. Even with the stuck accelerator publicity I would still go with Toyota, or several other makes.

Aveo 1.6L

Timing belt failure destroyed top of engine, can't find replacement was told only 2004 & 2005 will fit this cars, all engines found have the same problem, trashed top ends due to timing belt failure. Was contacted repeatedly about service for my car, oil, tune up, tires, ect. Was never told about timing belt and engine failure. I thought maybe that was because I had a 60,000 m9ile warranty and they were afraid I would expect them to do the work under warranty. I found that they called it normal maintenance $600 timing belt change at 60,000 miles. Why not a chain (stronger) if this is a critical failure part.

I will never buy a Chevrolet again. I've driven Hondas and Toyotas to 200,000 with little to no problems...and this stupid timing belt goes out on the interstate at 62,000. I had it scheduled to be replaced next week. With the broken belt went 4 engine valves and a destroyed piston....and that was only what the mechanic could see from a rather superficial examination. Basically to fix it I am going to have to rebuild the engine. The car is hardly worth the money to fix it. DON'T BUY CHEVROLET'S.
