Not sure what caused problem. I am the second owner, purchased car in 2010 with 32xxx miles on it. My son drove it back and forth to high school. I changed the oil 4/19/12, and the car had 70,xxx miles on it. Not sure of the exact mileage. I restarted the car and drove it around town that day and noticed that the odometer had added over 50k miles to the car, showing a mileage of 125,xxx on the odometer. My first thought was that it had changed to kilometers. I looked in the owners manual and there is no way to switch to kilometers on this model. The speedometer still works fine and the odometer seems to be keeping track of the mileage accurately.
My son did have a problem starting the car twice a day or so before this indident, but it was a loose battery cable. Not sure if this has anything to do with the odometer or not.
Does not really hurt anything except it really reduces the value of the car and makes you wonder whats going to happen next. Obviously nobody is going to believe you when you tell them this story when you sell the car, I would be skeptical.
Called the local Chevrolet dealer and they had never heard of it. They did offer to sell me a new cluster, but the mileage would be whats on this one, so that is no benefit.
Is there a way to reset an odometer back to a certain day? Similar to how you can reset your computer when you have problems to an earlier time and everything is on it that was on it at that date.
