Equinox LS 6 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

This winter discovered that the interior windows were fogging - not sure why until I discovered that the carpeting was soaking wet. Traced the problem to the spare tire well being filled with several gallons of water - when braking the water would slosh forward and into the car cockpit area - carpeting soaked to the firewall. Pumped out the water, removed the carpet and dried it, and ... the spare tire well again filled with water (lots of rain this year). Reported the problem to the dealer who claimed they "never heard of a problem" - found several cases on the internet. Problem now is that mildew on the carpet prevents my wife from driving or riding in the car - she is VERY allergic to mold. The dealer wants almost $800 for a new carpet - am still trying to get some satisfaction.

My Equinox is rarely driven, as I have another vehicle I use for the majority of my mileage. I found that the back cabin of my vehicle was visibly wet. The carpet is gray, and I was able to see the moisture before I even touched it. The area affected started just behind the front seats and ran down the edge of the doors. At first I thought there was either a leak from an open window, or that my sunroof seal had been damaged. After finding no moisture on the headliner, and verifying that the windows were completely closed, I checked the back.

When I lifted the cover to the spare tire compartment, I found approximately 4 inches of standing water. This compartment is completely self-contained, and there should be no reason for this to occur. I am having the vehicle serviced next week and will know more about the problem at that time.
