We checked the internet and saw that there were many people with this same problem. Contacting the Chevy dealer with this information did NOTHING! The dealer wanted between $1,000 and $1,500 to fix. We fixed it ourselves. Chevy needs to reimburse everyone for this. Get me on board for the lawsuit.

I bought my Impala and it had a slight intake gasket leak, i bought an engine with 40000 miles on it for 800 and had it replaced for another 800, now with the newer engine in it, the intake gasket has started to leak again. The problem is that GM recommends the Dex cool coolant but didn't make their gaskets able to stand up to this coolant. The dex cool breaks down the gaskets causing a leak. So far i have replaced both hub bearing, the catalytic converter, the engine, and an o2 sensor. I had to do all of this except the hub bearings just so i could renew my registration in IL because you have to pass an inspection first before you can be legal to drive. Overall cost to keep my 2002 impala on the road....2500....If there is a class action lawsuit i would love to be added to it.

YES, it's the coolant leak from the intake manifold gasket. So far I have put in stop leak and tightened down the manifold bolts. It seems to have slowed down the leak but not stopped completely. I have replaced two cats, one coolant sensor so far. Now I am having the powertrain module locking up and not permitting a engine start. I have to remove power to it for a reset and it will then start. I now also have the check engine light on. (haven't checked the code yet). I am a Chevy man but getting upset with some of these inferior design problems.

I bought this car from an individual , it had 15,349 miles and was in excellent shape. My low coolant light came on and would stay on, then it started to leak in the driveway. I took it to a dealer and the mechanic knew what it was when I said low coolant light on. This is a very common problem with this engine. Was there a recall on this?

Well, I can see that I'm having the same problems with my 2002 Impala as everyone else here. Low coolant light on, leaking antifreeze, was told that the DexCool (which is recommended for use in this car!) reacts with the gasket and eats is away, causing the leak. There should definitely be a recall or class action suit for this. Why should all of us consumers have to pay out the "you know what" for repair charges on this?? Needless to say, I am VERY upset. Right now, my car is at the dealership with an "estimated" repair bill of $1,000. I have had problems with this Impala since the day I bought it -- brand new! The brakes are terrible, have had them fixed so many times, turn signals stop working and/or only work when they want to, a/c hoses/vents problems, all of this is just ridiculous. It's really a shame because the Impala is a nice, roomy vehicle. But definitely not worth all this crap. If there is a recall on this cooland leak problem, would love to know -- and add me to the class action!

My low coolant light kept coming on. Had the radiator flushed about one week ago. On the way to work this morning and my car was running hot and low coolant light came on again. Now I am
told that the manifold gasket has to be replaced. Mechanic said
he has seen a lot of these. There has to be recall or a class action
lawsuit. If anyone knows of a suit pending please let me know.

I bought my car used a little over a year ago. I had barely had the thing a month when I started getting a low coolant light. I took it in to a local shop and they told me it would cost $830 to fix! At that point I was pretty mad, so I went to the dealer I'd bought it from. I didn't want to go originally because it's a little bit of a drive. Luckily, I had a 90 warranty from the dealership and I paid a $100 deductible and they took care of it. Overall I've been happy with the Impala but every once in awhile a major problem crops up and I have to spend money I don't have...

I had to replace the gasket on the intake manifold of my 3.4L 2002 Impala twice in an eight month period. It's a known problem with these vehicles, but there's no recall. Crazy! I also just had to have the catalytic converter replaced. Thankfully that was covered under a GM special provision (up to 120K miles). I've never had this many major problems with a car before.

If there is a class action lawsuit related to the intake manifold gasket I would definitely be interested in finding out more!

Same problem that I'm seeing on your website. Intake manifold gasket leaking in a few places more so under the thermostat. Low Level Coolant light keeps going on and off. If there is a class action lawsuit on this matter I would like to be added to it. I think GM needs to stand up on this matter. I bought this about a year ago. It had 83000 miles on it when I purchased it. I've had four Honda Accords that I bought new and the last one had 245000 miles on it and all I've done to the Honda's is tires and battery. I'll be going back to Honda.

I purchased my impala in 2004 with 53,000 miles on it. Other than needed to replace a faulty spare plug, I never had a problem with it. I changed the oil every 3,000 miles and traveled long distance in it once to Baltimore, MD. I don't understand how at 83,000 miles, I could have such a major problem. I went to 3 different mechanics and before they even popped the hood, they knew what the problem was. All I did was explain it. I must be a common problem and it needs a solution. It got the point where I was putting Dex-cool in my car once a week. I love my Chevy but shit like this will make me trade it in for a Honda.

I have had so many things fixed on my car in the last two years. I replaced the rotors three times last year. The body control module, alternator, battery and catalitic converter this year. I also have had the brakes completely re-done this year with four new tires. I have had tune-ups and oil changes when they are required to be changed. I now have a intake gasket that is leaking the coolant. I was on my way out of town with my family for Memorial Day and we stopped to get gas at the gas station and the car would not start. I luckily got some Dex-Cool to put in to get out of town. After fixing everything else, I do not have the money right now to pay $1,000 to fix the new problem. The dealer charges $100.00 per hour. We bought an extended warranty, but the warranty will only pay for $55 per hour in labor. That leaves me with a deductible and a $400 bill left over. I paid $1,000 for that warranty thinking it would really help with these junky GM cars that are being put on the market. Not only this, but the other day the back right door handle just came right off. It's a 2002 car with only 71,000 miles. It was well taken care of. It's wrong to build these cars, charge high prices for them and get a lemon. These cars should be lasting at least 100,000 miles with good maintenance. These dealers and the car manufacturers are taking advantage of us. Something has to be done to stop gouging the people.

I can not afford to keep fixing this issue every 2-3 years because they can't produce parts that function properly!!! So yeah, like so many other Impala owners I had the lower intake gasket go out. GM really dropped the ball on the gaskets they put in their cars!! If you people could see the crap gaskets compared to the FEL PRO "problem solver" set you would know why US auto makers are having a rough go of things. Any way mine went out around 117,000 miles. I didnt have the 500 bucks the local shop wanted to replace them so I did it myself and that is why my replacement cost was only $160. My leak was on the drivers side water jacket in the front bank. It was leaking out of the motor under the thermostat. The coolant ran down the front of the block by the transmission and right through my starter! Now it is acting up. Antifreeze is a caustic solution and most likely damaged some of the wiring. Im just glad that I fixed it before it started pitting the aluminum head (you are talking anywhere from 1500 to 2500 total if that happens, as the heads have to be replaced or machined). For anyone that has to have this problem fixed, INSIST on more expensive FEL PRO replacement gaskets. They are called problem solver for a reason ;-)

Impala LS 3.8V6

My wife bought this car new and drove it to 50-55k miles when I took over. Around 1 month ago (67k) the low coolant light came on, no problem I thought and topped it off. A few days later same problem, this time I topped off radiator and reservoir. A few days later same problem. Looked for leaks in the obvious places but could find none. This had me very uptight since coolant was being used with no apparent leak. Finally I parked in a clean parking space for a few hours and was never so glad to find a leak from what appeared to be the area of the water pump. I debated for several weeks whether to attempt the repair myself or take it to the dealer. Since I am in the middle of a home improvement project the dealer won. The service department told me I had a cracked intake manifold gasket and needed a new water pump as well and the cost would be around $800.00! I was a bit surprised by the cost but decided to let the dealer do the job. As of this posting the car is being worked on. Other than this issue I have had zero problems with this car and am very pleased with it. The dealer got me right in and the car will be done same day. As for a recall, GM has a history (I am sure all makes have a similar one) of known problems and no recall. Class action lawsuit? Cars are machines and parts wear out! As with people cars are similar but each is unique and are uesd and cared foe in different ways. I am not happy to shell out $800.00 but I feel comfortable with the situation.

I didnt have my impala brand new. I bought it at 75,000 now its about 78,000-79,000 miles on it. When i start my car or sometimes it take a while but ther eis a very LOUD screaming sound coming from the engine. People told me its sound like a train, a plan, or a fire engine even a cop siren. I thought it may have been the PCV valve. I replaced it and no it wasnt it. I finaly took it to a mechanic and they told me it is the intake manifold gasket. They said they dont knwo why it had a classic plastic gasket on there. The job on the books cost about $350 and the gasket with everything is over $100 he said he would do it for $400. Also my valve cover gaskets need to be replaced from leaking. I have to add oil every month or so. Also the transmission I THINK there something wrong with. Now this was WAS beated on because it use to be a cop car. I was thinking about doing this job myself. Im not sure what im gone to do but i need to think fast because this sound thats sooooooo loud is pissen me off. I have a feeling im going to be looking foward to more problems. but its my baby so. I drive roughly 110 miles round trip a day to my job and need my car to be healthy. Since I am a female on the highway I pay close attention to my gauges and listen to my car. I do regular maintenance. The Low Coolant Level light came on the Message center. The temp gauge was normal. When I got to work I noticed a smell of antifreeze. I thought maybe I was due for a radiator flush so I took it to the Chevy dealership closest to my job. They kept it all day and called to tell me it needed a new water pump and intake manifold gasket. The cost, $1018. Of course money I don't have. I babied my car home and parked it until the weekend. My husband changed out the water pump, purchased from O'Reilly's Auto Parts for $45 and bought a gallon of Dexcool for $14. Chevy dealership wanted $115 for the water pump and $21 for the Dexcool. Go Figure. Well the problem is still there, so the next step would be the Intake Manifold Gasket. The dealership told me it would be $650 to $800 to fix. I believe this is a task my husband cannot handle on his own. I will either park it until I save $800 or keep driving it and add water at home and at work.

It sickens me that Chevy has downgraded their vehicles. We currently own a Chevy from every decade for the last 5 decades, and this Chevy is the worst one. The 66 Nova is more dependable than this 2002 Impala. The Nova is garage kept and is not meant to put 110 miles a day on. I purchased this Impala off the showroom floor in Oct 2001 and paid a pretty price for it. For $28,000, I would not think that would be the price to pay for a disposable car.

FYI, the temp gauge has ran 180 to 200 throughout this whole issue. A strong smell of antifreeze is still present even after changing the water pump but no visible leak. The leak was visible before the change out of the water pump. I was told to watch the oil, as water can get into the oil. Didn't see how that was possible since my block was not cracked, but the 4" water pump bolts go all the way into the block. FINE ENGINEERING! What in the hell has happened to Chevrolet? No wonder they haven't shown a profit since 2004. If they don't take care of the consumer; the consumer will go elsewhere.

Wish I found this site sooner! I drive A LOT for my job thus my car is a tool for me. The past few weeks, it has overheated constantly. I flushed/changed the cooling system, changed thermostat (MAJOR PITA to do yourself), changed coolant temperature sensor, bled air out of the system with the 2 bleeder valve screws... ALL with the same end result--low coolant light & chime several times a day, overheating almost to max, but wait, sometimes it ran fine and I saw relief, then it overheated again.

A friend of my cousin is a mechanic. I told him what was up. He immediately said it was the intake gasket that this car HAS PROBLEMS with this all the time. I asked him to fix it. He did. Just got it done (same day) and he charged me $378 for parts and labor (I'm in a very small town, so I know I would have been robbed in a large city.) I ran the hell out of it and the temp didn't go past the middle. Stopped it, idled, revved it up stationary and never got past half way... ITS FIXED! GM needs to stay on top of their game and issue recalls and fix their design flaws! My mechanic said (and showed me) that the original was made of plastic and silicone. The new one is metal. Now I'm hoping I will be good to go at least another 100,000 miles as my job kills cars.

Overall, I love this car for the space and comfort! The only other things I had to do was replace the heater core about 80,000 miles, thermostat about 90,000 miles and again at 155,000 miles, but this is negligable and acceptable to me because things do happen and these were low cost, but the major thing like the gasket happening on ALL of them is unacceptable!

My Mother had a 2000 Impala and had the steering knuckle problem, but mine doesn't have it.

Well I was a mechanic by trade so I was able to replace the gaskets myself on a Saturday morning. But I feel bad for the people who can't do it for themselves. GM knows it's a problem and should be paying for it. I now sells tools for a living and we make a tool just for the 3.4 and 3.8 liter V6 to make the job easier and quicker for the techs who work on the car. Seems to me that this should have been a recall thing--since the man who works on my car said he has fixed 5 or 6 cars in the last couple of years with the same problem. Whats the matter Chevy think they might loose a little money over this or what???

My 2002 Impala went in for a minor problem and they found the Lower Intake Gasket leaking. I guess I should be glad they found this ahead of time, but the cost to fix and repair this was more than I had bargained for. $800. They said it was a problem in the Impala. How come General Motors did not offer a recall or offered to help pay for the cost of this repair.

This is the second time that my impala has a major problem. The first was the front end sounded like it was was coming loose and chevy had to replace the complete steering rack. This time I brought the car in for the same steering noise and the dealer told me he had good news and bad news. The good news was that the steering noise was minor (needed grease in the gear box) and the bad news was that I needed a intake manifold casket and a water pump to fix what they told me was a coolant leak. Of course I didn't believe them until I noticed the car running warm. So far I replaced the thermostat and the water pump which neither of these fixed the problem of the car running warm. It's time to trade the car in for a toyota.

Where to start. First of all my Impalas check coolant light keep coming on and off. Had coolant flushed. Then light stayed on, replaced intake manifold gasket. The light went off. Then the engine blown at 80,000 miles, I replaced with a GM duplicate engine. Car is at 100,000 miles, just had coolant flushed and check coolant light stays on and off. I'm in the process of replacing the Coolant sensor, along with leaking reservoir tank.
Total cost for all repairs close to $4,000.

The first thing to go wrong was my ABS. One day the light came on for now reason and it hasn't worked since then. I took it to get it fixed and they want like $2000 for a new abs system. Then my engine overheated so i took it in all of my coolant was brown sludge it cost be $100 bucks and they flushed it. Then at about 90,000 miles i noticed my coolant was getting low about once a week then the oil was getting low about every 3 weeks. When it was last inspected there was oil in the cooling system. Most likely it is some type of gasket.

I have been having to add the Dexcool coolant every week so that the low coolant sign would turn off in the car. Well I took the car in to have an inspection done and I was told that there is a leak from the intake manifold. The reason that I have not seen the coolant on the ground is because it is sitting on top of my engine and it is evaporating before it can hit the ground. I have only had this car for 2 years and I have done nothing but baby it. I love this car and this is the thanks that I get. GM should really step up to the plate and pay for this repair because it is not something that I caused, it was there poor design. I would like to join in the law suit against them. I do not have a warranty on the car and I sure can not afford $1,000 to repair it.

Obviously, GM manufactured a poorly designed cooling system for the 2002 Impala. I've owned only GM vehicles up until now. I also own a Trailblazer that has had its share of problems that GM hasn't owned up to. It's unacceptable to have this kind of expensive failures in the cooling system of a vehicle that is way under 100,000 miles. I had sworn I'd never buy a Toyota or a Honda, but I can tell you know that's what I'll be buying. It's sad to see GM go downhill but they deserve it. Add me to the class action suit!!!!

I was also told the car needs a water pump. There clearly seems to be precedence here for a class action suit against Chevrolet regarding the coolant system of the 2002 Chevy Impala. Please add me to the list of any suit. If Chevy doesn't clear this matter up with an immediate recall, then they are going to pay through the nose not only through class action but through a continuing degrading reputation.

Needless to say, as along with everyone else, my coolant started to leak from my 2002 Chevy Impala. I noticed the low coolant light would come on, then go off, at first. Then, sitting in traffic one day, my car started to overheat. I made it home, and noticed a nice stream of coolant spilling onto the drive way. Went to the dealer, and of course, my warranty was up. I was told I needed a manifold, oil change, (since the coolant was getting into the oil), and thermostat. I have no problem with the dealer, as he said it's such a common problem, he has cars coming in every week with the same problem. He also said that Chevy isn't giving any money to the dealers to help finance the repairs. Which I believe fully. Malibus also have this problem too, I was told. So my problem is with Chevy. They are unbelievable. To have so many cars, with the same problems, and not issue a recall for it. What kind of company does that to their customers? OH, A ONE THATS SINKING! It's not fair to stick ordinary people with a huge repair bill that should be covered by a recall. If anyone has any information on where to sign up for the class action, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

My problems started about 70000 miles low coolant ligth, steering column bushings, drivers side front wheel bearing, drivers side tierod end and gas mileage dropping off badly. We took car on trip and the gas milage sucked. I took it to a GM dealer and found that the converter was bad. I couldnot believe it, luckly it was covered under warranty. The dealership replaced coolant sensor said it was bad but it was not too long after being replaced it came back on. I starting noticing a coolant smell but could not find the leak. I finally had my wife take it in to dealer to find the problem. I got a call shortly saying that the intake was leaking 650.00 dollars to fix it. I ask the service manager if this was a common problem. Well you already know the answer. I want to get in the lawsuit, anybody with info?

I am a college student with not a lot of money. This problem has caused a huge set back for me. I rely on my car to get me to and from school, my job, and even to hang out with my girlfriend. I started noticing a problem when the coolant overflow tank started having a nasty brownish splatter on the inside of it. I called my buddy up who is a certified mechanic and studying to be a shop teacher. He said that the 3.4 liter motors are notorious for having the intake manifold gaskets fail. I asked him what it would cost to get this repaired, and he told me between $600-$800. With my lack of income at this point in my life this repair is very hard for me to swallow for some dumb ass engineer's F'up at GM. I hope this lawsuit goes through and GM is forced to fix their mistake via repayment for the work, or a recall on cars that haven't had blown the intake gasket yet. We'll see how things go.

This problem of the leaky intake manifold gasket first started with the low coolant alarm coming on intermittently when the car was still under warranty. I had the coolant low level sensor changed under warranty. When the low coolant level alarm came on again I disconnected the sensor thinking it was just a nuisance. The next thing I noticed was that the coolant had to be topped up regularly.

Last year I was informed by the GM dealer that my intake gasket needs to be replaced at the cost of about $1000. Of course the warranty was up at this time.

Since then I have been keeping my eye on the coolant level and topping it up regularly. I had assumed that the coolant was leaking to the outside as I can smell coolant and the block appears to wet under the intake manifold.

Last week my wife complained that the engine was making a lot of noise when she started it in the morning. When I heard it over her cell phone it sounded like the lifters weren't getting any oil. After I got home I checked the oil and noticed it to be off colour a sort of brownish tint. I had the oil changed and now the engine sounds great starting up in the cold. Now I'm thinking that the coolant is getting in to the oil and possibly doing engine damage. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get this gasket changed or trade in the Impala for a Toyota.

I have always been A GM man but after this problem with the Impala and a premature failure of the transmission in my Astro van I doubt that I will ever buy another GM in my lifetime. What really annoys me is that GM has to know that they have used defective gaskets on the Impala but won't extend the warranty to fix the problem.

The low coolant light came on while driving through the city last year. I checked it and it was low. I noticed the sides of the overflow tank were pretty "dirty" so I decided to change the coolant once the weather got warmer. (DEX-COOL SUCKS) I changed the coolant in June and noticed that it seemed to drop a little bit but I figured it wasn't full the first time. Until the end of November, I didn't have to add any coolant. About that time, I started to notice a coolant smell, but I couldn't find any leak. One day I got out the flashlight and started looking. I noticed a small puddle under the "intake manifold". I contacted my mechanic and asked them to check it out when I brought it in for inspection. Before I took it to him, I changed the oil. I always take a good look because you can tell alot from it. It was discolored (brownish instead of black). I asked a mechanic about it and he said there was coolant in it. I called the dealer and he said bring it in. I just got off the phone and he said the intake manifold was leaking. I told them there was a TSB out about the problem. He said it wasn't covered under warranty. I said that proved there was a problem. I don't know if that is causing my cost to be lower. I asked about the damage to the bearings and he said he had no way of telling. He said they would add a can of additive and hope for the best. It's not making any noise-YET!!! I pray I found it early enough. I think GM ought to pay for this. I've never had a problem with an intake manifold gasket leaking unless it wasn't properly installed. I've "loved" this car up till now. I hope GM steps up and takes responsibility. I have been a loyal GM owner until now and hope to continue. Add me to the class action.

I am sick of expensive repairs. This car has 110,000 miles on it but this problem should not happen at any mileage. A couple months ago I had to put on a new header pipe because the flange broke off at the engine -> $550!, I also had the wipers get screwed up and stop up on the windshield instead of where the ae supposed to stop. I fixed myself but it would have been a $200+ repair. It tuns out that these are both very common Impala problems! Now, I need the intake fix for about $1000! I cannot afford this car! GM should have recalled these and fixed all fo them! This problem should definitely be a class action lawsuit! Sign me up!

Since August my low coolant light has come on periodically. When I check the radiator and the overflow tank they are full. I was told it may only take a drop or two of coolant for the sensor to think it is full. I had my car at the dealer for an oil change and mentioned the problem to them and asked that they check the problem. I was called later in the day and told that I have a "slow" leak at the intake gasket, the thermostat is bad and the sensor needs to be replaced. All this for the unbelievably low price of $1,000 and that doesn't include the cost for the diagnostics. I didn't know what to do. I called my brother-in-law who does all of his own car repairs. Then I decided to check out the internet and low an behold when I typed in my problem at Google it took me to this website. I think my dealer and I will have a long talk tomorrow. Oh and did I mention that they called me back before the end of the day to tell me they would pay for 50% of the repair costs...........

$990 and a day and a half might get my car back to me with a new gasket and low coolant sensor.

FYI: Have heard from several people that this problem and many others, including waterpumps going, might be caused by the DEXCOOL coolant used in GM cars. Had mine swapped out for regular, and a month later, my Manifold Gasket fails. Could it be that 55,000 miles of DEXCOOL killed the Gasket?
