problem #49

Feb 182005

Silverado 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 102,884 miles

The contact stated the ABS sensor has been replaced twice. This failure almost caused two accidents. Both ABS sensors malfunctioned within 10,000 miles. The dealership replaced the first sensor because it was oxidized to the hub assembly. The second sensor was cleaned. There was a NHTSA recall campaign 05V379000 concerning the anti lock brakes, but the contact's state was not included in the recall. The tire were cupped and had to be replaced due to a vibration coming from the vehicle. Updated 01/11/06.

Silverado 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 36,900 miles
At 36,900 miles I had the rear and front pinion berrings replaced on my drive train. I also replaced the tires which were worn out. The vehicle is not driven much (4.5 years old) as indicated by the mileage. I also experienced my accelorator being "stiff" when I attempt to depress it. I think GM needs to look into their shoddy transmission components. I also had the rear seal replaced at approximately 10,000 miles.

Truck started vibrating, took a tire to a Firestone dealer, they said that happens when tires aren"T rotated properly, I work at a auto service repair center, and my tires are rotated every 6000 mi faithfully, so I disagree. (tiresize: P265R75R16)

Front tires started to show noticeable wear, cause could have been that the front end was out of alignment. They rotated the back tires to front and realigned the front end. Same wear appeared at 5000 miles. Goodyear told me the 23575R16 must be 35lbs on all four tires. The label on the door says 28lbs front end and 35lbs on rear tires. Goodyear says the low inflation has caused permanent damage.

At 2000 miles front tires started to show noticeable wear, dealer said front end out of alignment could have cause the tire wear, rotated the back tires to the front and realigned the front end, same wear appeared at 5000 miles. Goodyear said low inflation cause permanent damaged. The pressure is 35lbs on all four tires, although the labels says 28lbs on front and 35lbs on the rear.

Brought truck into auto dealership and Firestone dealership, and both told me that my tire is delaminating. Both told me this is from driving with a flat tire. This tire has never been flat, nor has it ever been low. This is the second issue I have had with the Firestone tires on this truck. (tiresize: P265/75R)

Slight to heavy vibration occurs at highway speeds of beginning at 64mph to 78mph. Pickup has been do dealer 4 times since purchased new on 07/28/01 regarding vibration. Dealer keeps rebalancing the tires and this does not correct the problem. The pickup will be in the dealer's shop again this week, only this time they are looking for drivetrain problems. The vibration at highway speeds appears to be a reoccuring problem with the Silverado since introduction based on other consumer complaints.

I was in the Idaho mountains on a day trip when both rear Firestone at tires went flat. I changed the most flat of the two and made it into a town on the spare and a flat tire. I put air in the flat tire and made it home. I contacted GM and they told me that the Firestone at tires on their trucks were different than on Ford and that their's were safe (yea right). I went to a tire retailer in my area and had all the Firestone Wilderness AT tires (including the spare) removed from my truck and new tires (not Firestone) installed. The tire installer verified that the problem was tread separation. I just wanted to ask you to please recall these killer tires. I was lucky and didn't kill myself and my family on our outing because of them. All it cost me was $500 for new tires to replace the garbage Firestone Wilderness AT tires that Chevrolet installed on my truck. (tiresize: P26575R16)

While driving on the freeway at 75miles per hour the left rear tire had a blowout, the tire completely peeled apart. It took my husband about 1mile to come to a stop, during which time the tire caused damage to the paint, wheel well, tore off a mud flap, and bent the steel rim. The vehicle is a work truck so my husband purchased 4 new tires immediately the truck was vibrating because of the bent rim so he also purchased new rims. Please let me know if anything that I might collect from Firestone. I know his tires are not on the recall"?"but it came apart just like all the tires you see on tv and the internet...thanx in advance jo lachance. (dot number: Vn11bfc tiresize: LT245/75R1)

I had a Firestone Wilderness AT tire in the size of P265/75R16 blow the entire sidewall out at a speed of aprox 55 with about 2000 miles on the tire. The auto was a Chevrolet Silverado, the tire looked lik it was cut around the sidewall just like the tires I saw on the recall of 15 inch. (tiresize: P265/75R16)( dot number: Tire size: P265/75R16 )

Despite repeated alignments and balancings, the tires vibrate, the vehicle pulls, and wet and snow performance is poor compared to other oe tires GM has used in the past, I.e. Goodyear. I have discussed this problem with national tire and battery, and they are of the opinion that all Wilderness AT tires are defective and should be recalled. I have found many other owners of Chevy trucks will similar experiences, and there are many people on the internet that have documented blowouts. It is time to act and get Wilderness AT tires off the road with a complete recall. Thank you for investigating this matter. James cilecek, md. Cjaimesw@hotmail.com.
