New member, glad I found it, now I am really worried about other problems with the truck...The speedo quit working and wondering what the best recourse or action to be taken. Has anyone replaced the speedo on their own? Ours is out of warranty. Where is the best price. It has been a good truck thus far, service 4WD light comes on, have to replace the back brakes but after 100K that is to be expected. Mechanic said front brakes are fine yet. The tailgate lever broke on us, poor design. Plastic. Going to check brake lines tomorrow now that I know they have been having problems with them rusting out.

So I called Chevrolet, and they told me that there was a special coverage for this problem. It was not listed as a recall, but a special coverage problem.......BUT my truck had over 80,000 miles at the time that I determined this. At the time that the problem began, I did not have over the mileage......anyhow if it was 7 years or 80,000 miles, they would fix it, otherwise......They told me im screwed!
This is an est. $800 repair with the part costing at $500, and the mechanic at the dealership charging who knows how much per hour for labor. Needless to say, I will be driving my POS Chevy around town dodging the cops hoping to not get a ticket since the speedometer and the tachometer will not work correctly.

Took 04 Chevy in 4 cluster panel not working and G.M. dealer would not even look at it when told what problem was and how many miles on truck. Said it was a recall and I had 2000 miles over warranty. Thanks so f----ing much. I don't have money to get it fixed.the truck is starting to not run due to cluster panel.. Not because of any maintenance problems on my part. The truck is not payed off and has to sit while I try to come up with money that I don't have to get it fixed and still make a 465.00 mth payment. I believe if it is a recall then G.M. should fix it no questions asked.

I took my truck to the local dealer and they refused to fix the speedometer. they said it was not sticking when they tested it. They must think i am a liar. this is the only Chevy vehicle that I own and with service like this it may be the only one I will ever own. I recently bought a Nissan and they will fix any problem that I may have no questions asked. I asked the service manager who will pay for the speeding ticket should I get one and he had no comment. If you take a problem vehicle to a service department shouldn't they just fix it. I think they are just lazy and do not want to fix it. And guess what they charged me to check it. that is garbage. I might be taking by business to another dealer. the speedometer sucks it should be recalled. This is why Chevy is not doing so well my 2 import cars run great.

2004 Chevy 2500HD. Speedometer went crazy right at 41K miles.Same as other complaints; reads anywhere from 80 to 105MPH. From complaints on web, there were faulty speedometers in several 2004 Chevy models. Obviously a piece of trash factory equipment, but it appears that GM is not very much interested in remedying this defect. Maybe they should spend a couple of dollars more on vehicle components, and a little less on executive compensation and absurred union retirement agreements!!!!! Not that I expect much satisfaction, but I will pursue this through the 800 number and web site listed in one of the previous posts.
Update from May 19, 2009: Went by dealer to inquire about recall on these gauge clusters, but there is officially none. However, further inquiries revealed that GM has extended the factory warranty to 78K miles for this part, so most private vehicles should be covered by factory repair.
You have to pursue this on your own though, as factory is not notifying owners of this remedy.. Sadly, it seems they are hoping many will not find out about it, and they will not have to replace many gauge clusters.
While there I also asked about the clunking steering column noises common to these trucks. Service knows immediately what you mean, but factory is not doing anything about it at this time; about $200 to replace the steering shaft from your pocket. I guess it will take a class action law suit like the one that got the gauge cluster problem solved. A pretty sad example of their business practices IMO, no wonder they are in such trouble.

It wasn't covered by Chev's warranty because of mileage and my extended warranty didn't cover the instrument cluster. I questioned the dealership and they had no pity. I told them my Jeep is at 139K miles and the speedometer still works fine.

can't believe the speedometer stopped working. It's very erratic; sometimes it will read 140 then other times 60--if you turn the vehicle off it loses 10 miles each time so if you start at 40 and turn the vehicle off 4 times you'll start a 0 again--i think this should come under a recall as others are having the same problem as I can see from your site.

Found the website with the numbers posted. Called Contact number: 800-630-2438 and had an automated system setup to call (866) 514-0405 or visit http://speedometersettlement.com/
The website and 2nd # listed above only says to check back after March 23, 2009 to see the settlement results. Called the Contact number: 800-630-2438 back and spoke with a live person to see what the terms of the settlement would be. If it goes through this fix would be at no charge to owners, IF mileage is under 70,000 for 2003 and 2004 models. For 2005 you need to be under 100K miles.
Asked what to do in order to report a problem for my truck since it was obvious that there were similar issues with like models experiencing the issue, regardless of mileage and the year. No coverage for trucks over 100K and no suggestions.
General maintenance I understand, but this is not something that was due to neglect or misuse of the truck.
What's that say to customers? After 100k is there no trust in the product?

I bought this truck used well after the 70K warranty. We started experiencing this problem last month when my husband was pulled over for 75 in 50 and we were showing around 60. A few days later I looked down and freaked I was doing 100. I slowed to 50 and then realized I was barely moving. This has progressively gotten worse. My fave is when I was sitting perfectly still and doing 95. Now it is pegged out at around where 150 would be. We can't afford to pay $500 to get fixed.

Well let's see couldn't tell how fast I was going, Dealer was no help, so after 4 run-ins with the local police I bought a GPS unit so I Can tell how fast I'm going. (The Gps system is a hell of a lot cheaper than the new cluster) Speedometer works from time to time however is usually wrong, (says 15 mph @ 75 mph and under 50 mph doesn't work at all).

I notice about a month ago my oil gauge quite working. I figure at my next oil change I will have them take a look at the oil gauge.
Dec. 19th we left NC to go back to Michigan for the holidays to see family. I notice while driving up my speedometer was bouncing around. We made it up to Michigan. Monday, Dec. 22nd, I decided to get the oil change and when they finished I got back i my car and my speedometer said I was driving 110MPH but cars were passing me. The oil change place says they are not responsible. I called the dealership and they tell me they won't have it fixed until Monday/Tuesday. That is not good because I am leaving Sunday, Dec. 28 to head back to NC. Now for the rest of the week and my drive back to NC I will ahve to judge my speed by how fast others are driving. It is a big pain in the ass. I found this website today and I see this is a re-occurring problem will the 2004 Silverado's. I hope my extended warranty will cover the cost to have this fixed. It will be a long drive back!

Glad I found this site before doing anything!
At 7:00 PM Friday night on the interstate already 100 miles between me and home and heading away - all of a sudden - ZERO oil pressure on the gauge. With two dogs in the back and heading out for the weekend in the mountains, THAT will surely get your attention. Pulled off at a truck stop, checked oil, added a little just in case, restarted and everything looked fine on the panel. Being past the halfway point...kept going another 100 miles to my destination. So far, so good (but I was watching the dashboard closely).
Returning Sunday became an adventure. About 50 miles into the return trip the speedometer started going nuts. It says I'm doing 75/80 and folks are passing me. Then 90 - cars still passing me. I'm going WTF??!! By the time I reached home I'd been doing 120+ for over two hours (according to the panel). When I killed the engine it at least slowed down to a reasonable 65.
Found this website last night. What others have described about this problem and what I experienced are classic symtoms of the failure of the instrument cluster electronics which GM seems fully aware of. Read the previous posts for details on GM's extended warranty.
Down to the dealer this morning (doing 110 behind cars doing 45 - interesting). No issues with the dealer: 37.5K on the truck is well under the 70K warranty cap for the problem. Parts ordered and it'll be fixed in a few days when they arrive.
One big concern I have is whether the new GM parts actually FIX the problem or if they're simply a bandaid that could come off at some point and have it occur again. Don't yet know the answer to that,

Thanks to this web site I saved several hundred dollars. I had the same problem as others that posted. The speedometer started acting flaky, then went all the way past 120 mph while driving and 95 mph when stopped. I used the GM contact number from previous posts and GM verified the VIN as part of a special warranty. GM confirmed that they would extend the warranty to 7 years at 70,000 miles for this problem. The rep was very good and mentioned to check the hot line for major out of warranty problems, He advised that they do consider customer goodwill. It worked for me this time. The repairs will take two appointments. The first one is to check the instrument cluster panel for info such as mileage, hours, etc. Then they order the cluster and have it programed to match your stats. Once the part comes in, you bring the car back to complete the repair. Here's the GM phone number and bulletin info:

Before finding this site, I was prepared to purchase a cluster off ebay. There were all kinds of deals ranging from junked panels to complete rebuilds. There was a guy from Connecticut who looked the best. He had a full line of services which ranged from selling stepper motors to complete rebuilds. He also had detailed instructions for removing the instrument panel cluster and he included full programming. The complete rebuild was $240 with exchange of the defective unit . He could also add some extras including the trans temp gauge.
Thanks again for the help. One ten minute phone call saved me at least $240 and an afternoon of messing with the repair.

Starting back in April 2008, I noticed that my RPM meter had stopped working. A few weeks later my speedometer and voltmeter started to act up as well. It is now August 08 and the RPM meter has not worked since, the speedometer and voltmeter continue to remain on it's own program and will work when it wants too. I have researched this problem and have noticed that quit a few others are dealing with same problem. It has been mentioned that the PCM cluster is what needs to be replaced, which is about a $600 part not including the labor costs to replace it. I just don't understand why Chevy does not recall this as there are those of us driving our Chevy's not knowing what our accurate speed is. Obviously a serious safety issue!! I previously owned a 97 Chevy Z71 and decided to stay with Chevy and purchased a 2004 Chevy Z71. Wish the amount of problems I have had in the last year that I have owned this truck, I must say that I am really disappointed!!!

Okay, my speedometer is working fine, BUT.... I have some info for those of you with issues. I received a letter from GM about the instrument panel may malfunction and GM is offering a special 7 year 70,000 mile warranty for this problem. The program also is set up to give refunds for the repair if you have paid out of your own pocket. The special warranty has a number of 07187. GM can be reached about this at 1-800-630-2438 8AM-11PM eastern Mon thru Fri.

THANKS GM! Now how about some work on the rear end clunk and we NEED some more MPG's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

see that there are already 26 complaints about this same problem. amazing that right after the warranty expired this problem arose. have checked recall lists and don't see it listed - sounds like something that should be repaired for free. will keep checking for some kind of recall or free repair for this annoying and somewhat dangerous malfunction.
sometimes speedometer starts at zero and sometimes it starts at 60mph showing a top speed of 110-120 while going approximately 65-70.

While my vehicle was set on cruise at 65 mph, I was pulled over by a highway patrol officer who stated he clocked me at 79 mph. I had no idea my speedometer was broken. When I looked down at my speedometer while parked, the speedometer read 50 mph. I knew then there was something wrong. The next business day, I called my dealership and they replaced it for free under a special warranty since my truck was out of warranty by 3,000 miles. To have the ticket waived, I have to get a letter from the manufacturer, Chevrolet 866-790-5700 proving there was an issue/problem with the speedometer which was out of my control. The operator I spoke with said that GM does not write letters anymore concerning this issue. I told them they could either provide me a letter or provide my attorney with one. I also asked to speak to a supervisor. I was on hold for over 20 minutes waiting on a supervisor to come to the telephone. As I got impatient, I decided to call them from my cell (while on hold from my landline). Of course while giving my spiel again, a supervisor finally comes to the landline phone and then puts me on hold for another 5 minutes to tell me that GM will not send me a letter. It is now in the hands of my attorney.

When i was driving home from work i noticed that my speed gage said i was going 70mph when i was really going 30mph. As i drove and stopped through town my gage would read 40 when i was at a dead stop. As the trip continued i noticed that the gage could go up but was having troubles going back down. I took this to the dealer and they told me that i would have to pay for it because its past its mileage. I was mad and did not understand why a know problem could not be fixed by them. Nothing i did caused this to happen. GM is responsible for this problem but decided to past it on to me. Thanks a lot GM.

My speedometer is in a state of disarray. Sometimes it works properly and others times it has a mind of its own. At times, when I start my truck and begin to drive away it says I am going zero mph and other times it will peg over to 120 mph and stays there. When I come to a stop sometimes it will bounce back and forth between zero and 120 and other times it will bounce between 120 and 110. This is very troublesome and a real problem.

I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE IS NO NOISE. SOMEONE IS CRAZY HERE! AT THE SAME TIME THEY DID FIND BROKEN MANIFOLD BOLTS , A LEAKING OIL COOLER LINE AND TWO BAD SOLENOIDS FOR THE HEATER/AIR CONDITIONING. NOW THAT MY WARRANTY IS UP(38000) THE SAME OIL COOLER LINE IS LEAKING OIL ALL OVER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, MY SPEEDO GAUGE FLICKERS + - 5 MILES PER HOUR AND THE TRUCK RUNS LIKE CRAP. THE TICKING NOISE HAS GOTTEN WORSE. IM ONLY GETTING 8 MILE TO A GALLON. THIS IS A REAL SHAME. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A CHEVY TRUCK OWNER. AND NOW, IM CONSIDERING TO BUY A TUNDRA. Read about the other complaints and they were my problem, too. Except, I have the Duramax with a manual tranny and the tach is screwing up too. Not good. I called GM at the number that was given in a previous complaint for customer service. There is a special coverage for the problem, but it stops at 70000 miles or 7 years. My truck has 87500 on it now, so they told me, "Sorry, you will have to pay for the repair since your truck has gone past the special coverage limits." So, if you have the problem and you re under the limit, call and get it fixed. Really sucks to pay so much money for a truck, and GM can't extend "special coverage" for a known BIG problem.

AT 38,000 MILES (JUST OUT OF WARRANTY) THE SPEEDOMETER HAS BECOME VERY ERRATIC. IT WILL BE FINE FOR A DAY OR SO AND WILL GO COMPLETELY OFF THE CHART PEGGED. IT IS BECOMING MORE & MORE OFTEN THAT IT IS NOT WORKING. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY GM. THIS ISN'T RIGHT AND I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. My biggest complaint is that GM knew about this problem and did not do a recall because they didn't consider it a safety issue. I talked to my dealer last year about my speedometer going all over the place and my oil pressure gauge failing when I had another issue repaired. They said nothing about this as a known problem, but just told me it would cost $500 to fix and it wasn't covered. With the numbers of vehicles affected by this, GM should replace it for free no matter how many miles you have. What difference does it make? I think it was very convenient that they just now sent out letters 4 years later knowing that a large percentage of vehicles would be over the 70,000 mile limit. I won't buy another GM vehicle.

My warranty just ended last month so now i have to pay for this because i did not know i had a 4 year or 60,000 miles warranty i thought i bought a 5 year or 60,000 miles like the ones Ford sells for their trucks.

Looks like I got both of the standard issues that come with a 2004 Z71. The truck is going in for the speedometer issue (steeper motors go out in the gauges?), and also having the steering shaft replaced. I bought this Chevy with out reservation as I have had quite a few in the past and they have all run perfectly. It is too bad that they are now crap like everything else, should have saved the money and gotten a Dodge since they are all junk in the end. The speedometer is under warranty, standard to 70k now as it is a safety issue but I am amazed that they will not fix the steering shaft as it sounds like this is also a very common problem. Shame on you Chevy, you have just lost my loyalty. Everyone makes mistakes/has issues, it's how you handle them that is important.

Thanks to this website, I complained to Chevrolet Customer Service on their 866-790-5700 toll free number and this was repaired under a special warranty. Saved me about $360.00. I mentioned this to a friend who also has a 2004 Silverado with 84,000 miles and his was also repaired at no cost.

I'm adding to the list of problems with the speedometer. I've mentioned to the dealer but they couldn't reproduce the problem so no resolution. Now with the information from this list I will push for resolution. The speedometer will work fine at times and then be totally inaccurate falling below the actual speed by 20 MPH.

I had this same problem, but I called GM at 1-800-462-8782 and found out this is covered under "special coverage 07187." The VIN numbers covered are 4Z1-4Z3. The instrument panel/cluster was replaced within 5 days of my phone call! I now have this problem as a thing of the past--AND I didn't have to pay a cent! Good luck people.

After reading the other complaints, I realized that we are not alone. We purchased this truck for our son less than 4 months ago. When I called the dealership about this problem, I was told that because we did not purchase an extended warranty that we would have to pay for the repairs ourselves. I am also furious after finding out that this is a problem with a lot of 2004 Chevy models, not just the trucks. I agree. Chevrolet should have issued a recall for this problem. Sounds like a defect to me!!!

i thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. speedometer said i was going over 90 mph. so i slowed down and eventually stopped. 45 mph at a dead stop. (each time i come to a stop the speed it sticks at is different.)
so i contact a local dealer about it and he ran my VIN... only to tell me that my factory warranty expired 5 weeks ago! 5 WEEKS! convenient. two different chevy dealers have quoted me between $450 and $480 to fix it.
nothing they can do. one of the dealers suggested that i pay $2100 for an extended warranty.
both of the guys at the two different dealerships were familiar with the problem and knew right away what it would cost to replace the cluster. come on.
GM needs to step up to the plate here. after reading the other complaints i'm even more convinced that this should be their responsibility! not knowing for sure what speed you're driving is a real problem!

There are not enough words to explain how frustrated I was with chevrolet in general when the head mechanic at the dealership knew exactly what the problem was because he had seen it before and thought it was common in the 2004 silverados. If it is common wouldn't it make sense for it to be a recall!!!!!!!! Chevrolet has really fouled up on this one.

This apparently is a very common problem and it costs $500 to fix it!!! How convenient for Chevrolet to have this go wrong after it is out of warranty. It creates more business for their service departments. $500 to fix this seems outrageous. This should be a recall item and they should fix it for free. It is very dangerous not having a speedometer that is not working but $500 is a lot of money. This is a safety issue.

I think this an issue that GM has to deal with. There needs to be a recall because I did notice that the odometer turns slower (not reading actual mileage).

Never had a vehicle when the speedometer went out. I'm really upset. I don't have the extra money to be fixing this. An estimate of $450 - $500. was given to me. Is there help anywhere?

My speedometer is in a state of array. Sometimes it works properly and others times it has a mind of its own. At time when I start my truck and begin to drive away it says I am going zero mph and other times it will peg over to 120 mph and stays there. When I come to a stop sometimes it will bounce back and forth between zero and 120 and other times it will bounce between 120 and 110. This is very troublesome and a real problem.

I previously posted on here that my 2004 Silverado speedometer that quit working. After a lot of frustration, I decided to contact the dealer where I purchased the truck. The dealer replaced the instrument cluster panel for free. They called it a goodwill gesture. Try and contact the dealer.

Speedometer quit working. Thought it had to due with the cold weather, but after it warmed up it starts at 35MPH as my baseline. Can't believe this would be safe!!

Speedometer reached 200 km/hr and froze..... just kept advancing even though I was going at a slower speed. I could not judge how fast I was going.
On this vehicle I have had trouble with coolant leaks. Cylinder head was replace.... water pump replaced.
Air bag wires wore from sliding seat forward and back.
Tail gate washer missing causing tail gate to close poorly.

My 2004 chevy silverado speedometer began to malfunction after 49, 000 miles. it would occasionally work but now it has quit working altogether. I have to guess my speed using the tachometer.
This can't be acceptable by the national highway traffic safety administration. I have complained to them but have not heard anything. I have also complained to chevy's email address and they advised there is no recall. I have visited numerous websites and observed complaints nationwide for similar problems on various gm/chevrolet vehicles.
Why is there no recall on such an obvious manufacturers problem?
Maybe if more people contact chevrolet/gm and nhtsa there will be a recall.

Silverado 1500 5.7L
I own a 2004 Chevy Silverado Z-71 and of course the speedometer quit working about a year or 2 ago. I never had the pleasure of receiving the letter informing me about the class action lawsuit to get it fixed. Can anyone give me information on how to join? I'd really like to get this problem fixed, and I don't think I should have to pay several hundred dollars out of my pocket for something Chevy already knew was wrong with the cluster wiring.
