Silverado Z71 1500 V8

This is a real pain as I'm afraid this is something more major, which will require going to the dealership. I've had people say it's not really that bad, but it is annoying. I've called the dealer referencing a few TSB's, but they just want to look at it...for $150. Any suggestions as to how major this issue is would be appreciated. Thanks.

Silverado LX 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 17,325 miles

The first problem was at 17325 miles when taken to the GM dealer, they replaced the intermediate steering shaft under warranty. The second problem was at 25,279 miles, vehicle taken to GM dealer (Bob Steele at Cocoa FL) covered under warranty. The third problem - same as before at 40000 miles, estimate of $225 to fix problem as vehicle is out of warranty. It seems to me that I have a vehicle that needs an intermediate steering shaft at about every 10000 miles or so in the range of $225.

So long GM, I have bought 4 Silverado's, I guess it is time to look at Toyota or Ford.

Silverado LX 5.3L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

I have had a problem with my steering. I feel a popping noise whenever I make a turn. I have taken the truck to the Chevrolet dealership where they told me the problem was due to the steering shaft needing lubed. The problem was fixed for a little while (probably about 7 months). The problem has now returned and my truck has 70,000 miles on it. It is no longer under warranty. They should have fixed the problem in the beginning. Thinking I should take the truck back to the dealership.

The dealer replace the idler and pitman arms due to excess play and replace the intermediate steering shaft do to lack of grease. both arms were covered under the extended warranty but not the steering shaft. the service manager said that the new shafts have an "O" ring that stops the grease from leaking out. I said,"So they figured out that they had an problem and fixed it." I asked how the steering shaft could be my fault when I have my truck serviced every 3000 miles. He winced and said that he agreed with me. I also own a business and could see that he was merely an employee doing what he was told. It pisses me off to be paying for General Motors mistake. I have bought nothing but Silverado 3/4 ton trucks for my business and never realized that there were so many complaints about their vehicles until Igot on the internet. I'm looking at Toyota. I hear that they may be coming out with a 3/4 ton diesel.

I refused to pay the $200 deduct. I talked to the owner of the dealership (Mr. Ed Youmans of Youmans Chevrolet in Macon, Ga.) I told him it was not right for me to pay for Chevy's mistake. This was my fourth trip for the same problem on two different trucks. He asked me where I bought the truck. I told him at Bill Heard in Atlanta. He sneered at me and told me to take it back to Bill Heard for them to fix.

A few minutes later I was in my truck and gone. I talked to mr. Blair Ferrel at 1-800-MYGMLINK and he told me he'd "log" my complaint. GM doesn't care about service so I'm trading trucks.

Silverado LS 5.6L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 15,000 miles

I first encountered this problem at 17,000 miles with my 2003 Silverado. The dealer replaced the steering column bushing. I was told (by the mechanic) it was plastic and would wear out again, that I'd be back. At 63,000 miles it was worst than ever, I could hardly stand it. I traded it for a 2005 and at 15,000 miles started to realize the same thing was happening again. Had a dealer in Macon, Ga. fix it at 17,000 and never new what they did. For the first month or so it was O.K. then it began to knock again. I have 42,000 miles on it now and it rides like a two horse wagon. I hate to get in it and drive it. It knocks so bad that my wife refuses to drive it. I'm fixing to clean it up, have it fixed one more time and hope I can sell it before it starts knocking again. I've been a Chevy man all my life. My dad was a Chevy man. This problem I've been told has plagued Chevy for years, obviously a design problem that they refuse to fix. This does it for me. I'm definitely not going to replace this Chevy with another one.

Silverado 2500HD 6.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 13,000 miles

I was informed by the mechanic at Hurd Chevrolet in Johnston, RI that this is a re-occurring problem with this truck and other Chevy's. Had it fixed in an hour and was on my way. However at 31,000 miles it has started again plan to have it fixed before the warranty is up at 36,000 or I will have to pay a $100.00 deductible. Chevy has replaced the steering column in 2006 or 07 but it still does not solve the problem of going to the dealer every 13,000 miles to have it corrected. Just put a new one in and get on with it.

Silverado 1500 3.4L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

rattling/clunking noise coming from lower front end, Since the truck is out of warranty, it was taken to an independent shop where I was told that it was the rack and pinion. Repairs were $900.00 and it did NOT fix the problem. Took it to another shop and was told that the noise was coming from the steering column, was also told to take it to the dealer because too many chevy trucks have this problem and there might be a recall. Dealer told me, because of the high mileage it would not be covered. This is very upsetting that a large corporation admits that there is a problem but will not do anything to correct their design errors.

The dealer greased the steering shaft and said that would fix the problem but a month later it was back even worse,It feels like the steering will fall apart at any time,It's going back to the dealer as soon as posible, but I think all they will do is just grease it again, something is not right, can anyone tell me the right way to fix this?

Clunking when turning, light bumps, can feel in the steering wheel.

But, I'd never trade my Chevy for a Toyota like one fellow said. At least the ball joints are staying under the Chevy's Ford's and Dodge's. 20.1 mpg average on about 5500 mile trip to Texas. Yeh, I like my Chevy.

Not much of a complaint huh!!

Silverado 1500 V8

Evidently it's a common problem but I didn't realize it and let the warranty expire without fixing it. From what I read they would only have added grease until it was out of warranty anyway and it's a problem that's been there since the 90's. I may try a Ford F150 next time. I always buy American and had always talked others into buy GM but it gets really difficult with a big corporation like GM working against me and other owners....Steering and brake problems are common on the 1/2 ton vehicles but the corporation pretends there are no issues.

34k on the car and clunking noise driving me bat sh*t! Brought to dealer fixed in one day steering gear (they gave me a rental for the day believe it or not) Just last week Sept of 2007 same f*cking noise, this time it's the steering column! Replaced under extended warranty, $100 deductible, problem gone for now so they say GM has come up with column that doesn't leak lubricant.... yea right! Any one with tire issues the bridgestones that came on your vehicle are nothing more than bottom of the line skins, junk em or spin em off, other than that no problems as of yet just passed 50k
