Huge win for car owners! All TSBs to be made public. The Center for Auto Safety just made the NHTSA (US Government) make public the full text of all TSBs from now on. They are the same organization that has petitioned the NHTSA & filed lawsuits to protect car owners over exploding gas tanks & other major safety issues. Whenever you drive in your car, you are safer thanks in part to a lot of work over the years by this small but very effective consumer advocacy group.

problem #71

May 042005

Silverado 2500 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 44,000 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

When the brakes were applied the vehicle's ABS activated at about 5 mph, no matter the weather condition. When this occurred it was difficult to stop the truck because of the pulsation caused by the ABS. Now this problem happens everything the brakes are applied. This incident occurs because dirt or rust obscures the wheel sensors located behind each brake rotor.

Silverado 2500 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 13,000 miles
Anti lock brake system corroded, and vehicle might not pass inspection. Took vehicle to inspection station, who said this was the problem. Had several incidents. Sometimes vehicle didn't stop. Brakes seemed to be defective. Consumer added that the anti-lock braking system activates while driving without depressing the brake pedal, thus causing heat build-up and increasing stopping distance. Also increases anxiety as to whether or not the vehicle will stop in time.

Silverado 2500 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission

Vehicle has 48,400 miles, on it, and had to have the rotors and brakes changed. Certified mechanics did the work. Consumer was upset about the fact that the brakes did not last long. When the rotors were taken off they were just pieces of metal missing, and they all were rusty, especially on the inside where the anti lock brakes operated. Consumer said that the front rotor was too thin to be turned, the brake pad was not worn out and it was poor metal from the manufacturer. Consumer talked to several other Silverado vehicle owners and they either had the same problem or didn't know about the situation until after they got there vehicle checked out, and was informed of the same problem. Consumer said that the dealership was aware of similar incidents such as this one because of other Silverado owners.

2001 Silverado ABS brakes kept applying at slow speeds while rolling to a stop. Applying after hitting a bump prior to stop. While getting gas one day I went to change lanes in the gas pump area, while barely moving the ABS pump started running and it took both feet and both hands holding onto the steering wheel to push down the brake pedal.the truck is 6000 mi. Out of warantee so I disconected the ABS fuse (mainly because I never had any faith in the ABS system anyway)but this was the last straw.I am disapointed that a truck with such low milage would have such a poor braking system.I relate this to you as it sounds like the problem described on the news and thought it might be important.

I have had serveral near misses while pulling a trailer with my 2001 Silverado pickup. The truck stops fine with no load. But when trailering it seems to take a lot more pressure to stop the vehicle. I've had the pedal to the floor on several occasions because the hydralic pressure wasn't there. I pulled a 3,000 lb. Gvw trailer, and a 10,000 lb gvw trailer with a 1500 Chevrolet Silverado extcab/long box. I have had the truck in shop and mentioned the problem said everything was fine.

Silverado 2500 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles
(1) on Saturday March 5th, 2005 we were pulling my 2001 Chevrolet exteneded cab 4X4 out of the mud. (2) the failure is that the anti-lock brakes locked up while pulling the truck out of the mud and it caused my truck to crash into the 2004 Hummer SUV that was pulling my Chevrolet out of the mud. The brakes became totally disabled while pulling the truck. The pedal was so hard and did not move. I had both legs on the brake pedal and the brakes did not work. There is no way to disable the anti-lock brakes on this vehicle. We are very lucky that nobody got hurt and the only damages were to my truck. I am requesting some repair assistance and improvements be made to allow me to disable the anti-lock braking system when needed to prevent these types of accidents and injury. (3) to date the failure is not fixable and I have not replaced the damaged parts on my Chevrolet truck. I will wait on a response for this complaint before proceeding with my repairs. I have previously submitted a report to the NHTSA for this exact same vehicle and have yet to hear anything concerning it!
