I own a 2000 Chevy Tahoe. It will not allow me to shift out of 4WD. I have researched similar complaints on the internet and have found many. There seems to be a correlation between the cold weather and the proper operation of that function. In a cold weather state such as Michigan, this could be a problem all winter long. As a recurring condition it can be expensive to repair. Just to diagnose the problem is at least $100 at most dealerships.
