CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer is known for many things, but perhaps it is most famous for its faulty fuel gauge.

This gauge flip-flops more than a politician during election season. Some report that the gauge says "empty" after a fill-up, while others report the gauge says "full" when they're running on fumes. Either way, there's one thing everyone seems to agree on: the darn thing is just wrong.

Following hundreds of complaints and a few accidents allegedly caused by the malfunction, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the issue in May 2011. Unfortunately for frustrated owners, no recall has been announced.

While driving on the expressway the gas gauge indicator beeped indicating that I was low on fuel. I was not sure when I filled up last so I stopped and filled up with gas. After filling up with gas, I restarted the vehicle, the gas gauge still read empty. Two months prior to this I had to replace the instrument cluster on the dash (speedometer, etc), so with this being the case, I determined that the gas sending unit was faulty or broken. From what I read, the cost to fix this varies from $650 to $850. I've put off this repair since I find that many people have the same problem and have heard news reports about a possible recall for this. Basically now, the gauge is never correct and fluctuates between empty & 1/4 of a tank. It will drop or rise multiple times in a 20 mile trip.

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While refueling the vehicle, the contact noticed that the empty fuel warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the fuel gauge reading was inaccurate and would fluctuate sporadically. The vehicle was taken to two different independent mechanics. The mechanic stated that the entire instrument panel would need to be replaced. Also, the contact stated that the speedometer reading would also fluctuate intermittently and provide inaccurate readings. There was a concurrent investigation for the failure under NHTSA action number: DP10001 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) that the contact believed could have been related to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

I purchased the vehicle in February, and the fuel gauge worked fine. A few weeks later, as I was driving, the vehicle stalled. Confused, as the gas gauge read 1/2 a tank remaining, I called a friend to come pick me up. He put gas in the tank, and it started up first try. I made it to a fuel station, and filled the tank. The gauge read half all the way to the station, and when I filled it, it read empty for the first 40-50 miles. Then, the needle floated the range of the gauge. It has been doing this ever since.

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that the fuel gauge would fluctuate between fuel levels, even with a full tank of gas. The failure would cause the vehicle to stall sporadically without warning. The dealer advised the contact that because the vehicle was no longer under warranty, they were unable to assist. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who diagnosed a faulty fuel sensor, which was replaced. In addition, the dealer replaced the float and fuel tank yet the failure was not corrected and persisted intermittently. The current mileage was 84,562 and the failure mileage was 78,000.

The gas gauge in my 2005 Chevy Trailblazer has stopped working. It began to show empty after filling my tank but then registering full about 50 miles after driving. Now it always shows empty and I have to record my mileage to keep track of my gas. I am always concerned I may run out of gas if I miscalculate my remaining gas. I can't take my 2005 Trailblazer on vacation since I have no way of knowing how much gas is in my vehicle. My wife ran out of gas on the highway and was almost in an accident. The dealer wanted almost $800 dollars and two days to fix the gas gauge. I cannot afford the repairs so I am forced to hope I will be safe in my vehicle.

Gas gauge on vehicle does not give accurate gas level in tank. Readings on the gas gauge fluctuate with vehicle in park, gives empty warning ding when tank is full, and readings on gauge fluctuate erratically at times while vehicle is in motion. Have been stuck on highway with an empty fuel tank a couple times with my three young children in the car. It is my concern that this may cause a fire in vehicle so I no longer put my family in it.
