My car died on the freeway, just shut down, called AAA and got towed to the mechanic who works on my car all the time. I take really good care of this car, oil changes regularly and new tires. Mechanic said need new engine. Car is worth $4500 - new engine $4500!

car developed a loud rattel and was on my way to mechanic when engine shut down. It apparently jumped time. this also creates usually other problems such as warped valves etc. engine fails to restart. we still owe over $1700.00 dollars on this vehicle and its dead in the water. the cost to replace or repair the engine will superseed the value of the car. just plain screwed in alabama thanks jon zlater

We bought the car after signing the paper the owner tells us they replaced head gaskets and put new water pump in...... well least to say it made a awful noise days later so we brang the car back, he told us he would fix. well days after that it started to stall at stop lights and would take forever to start. so again we brought it back. told us it was sensor, charged us 50/50. days later stalled would not start.. said it was hydrolic tensioner.. charged us again. week or so later driving fine and it made a loud knocking sound and just died.. stranded in the U.P.. at night towed it back.. said they would fix... we said ok but it would cost us 500.. well fixed it, wanted to charge us and still didn't run. come to find out i had the motor tore down. guess what no new tensioner, no new head gaskets, original spark plugs, we got screwed. no lemon law in Michigan. but you can't tell us he did work and charge us its called falsifying information..... civil suit or not? as for Chrysler were is the recall....????? oh and we asked for the old parts he said GO DUMPSTER DIVING!!!!!!!

I don't know if I can ever look at another Chrysler product ever again! This car has put me and my mother through hell! We have spent so much money on this car that the mortgage has been late 3 times already! And now it just dies... While we were driving it made this awful noise and we had to pull over. When we tried to start it up again it wouldn't even turn over! This car only had 86,000 miles on it! And this is not the only problem we had with this car, we had AC problems, countless brake problems, we had the computer replaced.... I could go on and on. We have spent so much money on this car that we are in debt and can't afford to buy another one! Thanks a lot Chrysler for engineering a crappy product and not owning up to it!

Where do I start? I purchased my 02 Chrysler Sebring Convertible in 2005 (it had 25k miles). Two days ago, it went out completely. I stopped at a stop light. It cut off and never started again. My mechanic diagnosed it as engine failure. Since I"ve had this car, it has been nothing but problems. I will never buy another Chrysler again. Ever! There was loud ticking noises, I would always have to put oil and antifreeze in it (every single week). Smoking from under the hood..it would always run hot, but the gauge would not warn me..I would realize it after I see smoke or smell burning oil.the list goes on and on.

Please never buy Chrysler if you want your money's worth. The exterior and interior was nice looking, but under the hood was a piece of JUNK! Now I'm stuck without a car.

The Chrysler company and their cars are a piece of sh*t! I had my car for 2 months and have spent nearly 1,500 fixing the vehicle. Let alone the 2,800 I paid for the vehicle from the auction. First I had to replace my water pump, and the next day after the water pump was fixed my engine failed!!! My car is currently not working, the entire engine is filled with oil sludge!!! Since I had the vehicle I have been on top of the maintenance. If anyone knows somewhere I can take this vehicle in MD to have the engine replaced under warranty or for free ny chrysler, or even a reimbursement, please let me know!!

My husband purchased the car for my 52 birthday on April 2, 2011. We had planned on getting new rims for the car and had only gone about 10 miles from home on the day the engine cut off on us which was April 15, 2011. We had the car towed to a garage and when the mechanic called to tell us he believed it was the timing chain, I immediately went online to check out possible cost for that repair. That's when I ran across this site. I saw how many people were having the same problem with basically the same make and model car I said there should be a class action lawsuit against Chrysler to make them pay for this repair. So if anyone finds such an action please let me know my e-mail address is debra9@hawaii.edu, Thank you and God bless you all.

I can not believe what I have been reading about this make of car. I too have been a victim of this engine design. I bought my 2002 sebring lxi a few years back in late 2007. I drove it for only a year and a half, and took really good care of it. Regular oil changes and even had it diagnosed when I first bought it. Then one day it started to run really rough and literally within a few minutes of noticing this the car completely shut down and seized up. A horrible knock came from the engine and it would not drive and now will barely even start and when it does it sounds like its gonna blow up!!!!!! I still owed over $5,0000 on it when this happened. I have been making payments on it for almost two years while it just sits there haunting me and stressing me out every time I look at it.

I just now saved up enough to replace the engine or have it rebuilt and then I came across this site with scores others telling about the exact same problem. I am sure glad I didn't spend the money yet before really investigating this.

Chrysler is literally ruining peoples lives by standing behind their cars. I have now paid thousands on my car and only got to drive it for a year and a half. I am going to end up eating the whole cost of this POS car!!!!

I wonder if there is a way to put a completely different engine in this car. If anyone knows please send me a comment. Also If you know of any other solutions on the legal end of things please share. We need to all band together and get paid for their mistake which has led to our misfortune.

Went looking to purchase a Chrysler in 2001. It was incentive for working for an auto manufacturing partner of Chrysler. Although I didn't see anything on the lot, I got a call from the dealer 3 weeks later telling me that "my" car was in. Apparently the salesman was listening as I stated what I was looking for and they ordered it to my specifications. There it was a brand new 2002 slate blue, leather interior, with a sunroof - shiny Sebring! I had never owned a brand new car. I was star struck. Here I am nine years later under 100,000 miles having had to carpool the last two days because the engine gave out on me this weekend. I am sitting in my office wondering what the hell I am going to do with the POS and reflecting back on all the issues I have had with it. Over the past 4 years I have experienced overheating, the check engine light going off and on, stalling while at intersections, oil light coming on at idle, a rattle in the engine that my mechanic said the oil change last week would fix, and now total breakdown of the vehicle. Mechanic says it will probably be $4-$5K to fix. Kelly Blue Book is right around there. Any suggestions for a reliable clunker that I can purchase to get me to and from work?

Had a full tune up in June, then changed the oil just two weeks before the head gasket went. I was told the car was extremely over heated but it never registered on my gauges, never showed any outward signs, steam or anything, just clanked and died while i was driving leaving a trail of anti freeze. The thing is I had told my mechanic it was acting up with the heat not working properly and before the tune up it had leaked a little anti freeze, but the mechanic after going thru the entire car could not find a thing, replaced the thermostat and tuned it up. Bad timing on the entire mess, but there just isn't a good time to lose your car. P.S. this car had other major components go

O my dear friends who own this car. I too am an owner. I LOVE my beautiful white convertible. I'm so incredibly devastated to have to trade it in but I can not continue to pay $380 a month and endure costly repairs for over $1000 twice in 6 months. My engine failed. It all started one morning I was driving home from dropping hubby off at work. I noticed the heat went out and the car sputtered and then just stopped. It dinged at me with an check oil light. I walked home crying all the way. Fast forward two weeks later and my mechanic tells me it's major engine damage (apparently by never getting my antifreeze drained and replaced in the four years I've owned it) and that the oil is mixing with the antifreeze and my head gasket needs to be replaced and it was going to cost $1800 to fix - and that's if he doesn't find anything else wrong with it while in there. I had to replace the transmission completely costing $2,300 back 4 months ago. I have four brand new tires on her too. O my dear friends, I'm going to miss her. I have tears in my eyes right now as I'm imagining never being able to put the top down and have my hair blown by the wind.

*Tip* If you're dealing with this same problem, I've drivin' to and from work (which is less than 10 minutes) with this major engine damage for two weeks. As long as I NEVER let it get hot or even warm for that matter, I make it home safe at the end of the day. I keep antifreeze in it even though it's decaying the engine and disappearing.

Good luck with your problems, e-mail me at ashleydbga@aol.com if you have any comments or questions

Total Engine failure in December. Just coughed and coasted to a stop. Less than 60K miles - purchased brand new in 2002 and bought the 7/70 warranty!...which means expired at 7 years in October. Now that is nearly perfectly executed planned obsolescence! Dealer quotes $7K to replace engine on a car that is worth $5K if running...and then actually asked me if I wanted to proceed!
Anybody need a doorstop with new brakes & tires?

Thought I had ran out of gas but apparently the real problem was that the oil was full of water meaning a blown head gasket and/or cracked head. Contacted a mechanic who informed me this was a "Problem Motor" and that Chrysler would take no responsiblity for it. After visiting this site and reading all the comments I guess the guy knows what he's talking about. Still paying for the car so have to fix it by replacing engine with a later 2003 or above 2.7L engine. I really dislike paying for the car now and frankly they can come and get it and it would be fine by me. Do you think the finance company really wants a car back that needs a new motor? I doubt it! At least, I feel much better now.

I was driving home from school Tuesday evening and I noticed a loud knocking in the engine. I immediately pulled off to the side of the road and the engine light came on and the car died. I only had 37,000 miles on the car. I have maintained regular oil changes on the vehicle and now Chrysler does not want to cover the vehicle under warranty. They are blaming me for the problem. I just had the oil changed on Saturday before this happened and prior to the oil change, I was not having any issues. I WILL not be having the car repaired because I will NOT give another dime to Chrysler. In fact, I am going to paint the car bright yellow and sit it in front of my house with the words LEMON painted across it. I have been forced to buy another vehicle and it is a CHEVROLET!!!!! I will NEVER buy another chrysler product and will continue to pursue legal action against them in this matter.

This car has been NOTHING but trouble since I bought it in July of 2007... now I know why the previous owner traded it in! After spending about 2-3K on repairs in the last year and a half, it is back in the garage because this week it has died while stopped at a stoplight twice! After about 10 minutes it did start up again but the engine light now stays on. Mechanic said it sounds like it could be a tune up job but he won't say for sure until he looks at it. Returned car week later with bad knocking noise was notified it needed new gears and chain and tensioners with new pump. Had car six weeks another 600.00 bill for parts no labor car jumped time 3 times at dealers while putting it back together. Car has no sludge problem everything crystal clean. On 12-31 while driving oil light came on for 3 seconds then motor quit won't refire. Motor shot dealer doesn't no if they warranty their work six months since I put 7000 miles on their work. Auto in great shape except engine I offered to purchase motor replacement in june because of high cost for water pump but service manager assured me everything in motor was in great shape.

Bought the car in August of 2007 after my previous car, a wonderful Nissan, was totaled by a red light runner. Still owed on that one, just my luck. So the dealership hooked me up with this gem. I already hated Sebrings but I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. The car ran great from September to February. First I noticed the heat wasn't working. Somebody suggested I put coolant in the engine. Whatdoyaknow it worked. One day on the way to work I hear a popping noise and the engine starts smoking. The temperature gauge goes all the way up and there's hissing coming from under the hood. Luckily I was almost to work. I pull in, still hear the hissing. Lift the hood, and the coolant is bubbling out of the reservoir. I let it sit all day at work, put coolant in it, then take it to the shop. Thermometer needs replaced. $500 later, the car is running like new.
Five months later the car starts overheating again. I didn't have money to get it looked at so I kept putting coolant in it. I went through about a gallon a week. Never noticed a leak during this time. About a month of this, then finally I notice a leak. I take it to the shop, the mechanic says he can't see anything wrong. It didn't overheat when they drove it around. Check back if it starts overheating again. A week later, sure enough it overheats. I'm on 71 and the temperature guage goes all the way up. I couldn't stop because I was nowhere near my destination. So I turn my heat all the way up to get some of the hot air off the engine. It works. When I get to my destination, what coolant was left was spewing all over the ground. Luckily I was able to drive the pos to the shop. They had it for a good week, they replaced the water pump housing $400. Which wasn't even the problem. Yes, the car was still overheating. Finally they told me that I had a blown head gasket and I might as well get a new car and get rid of this one. Oh that would be nice if I didn't still owe $4000 on it. So that makes two effing cars I get to pay on that I don't drive. Sweet! I hate you Chrysler. I hope you don't get bailed out.

I bought this car new at the end of 2001 and kept it well maintained. One day, out of the blue, a clicking sound started. At the next intersection the car stalled and upon restarting it, it sounded terribly unhealthy. No check engine light - but the engine certainly sounded like it needed checked!!! I managed to get it parked and had it towed to a repair shop for evaluation. $200 worth of investigation showed that the engine is in need of replacement as the mechanic suspects a rod is thrown.

What a piece of garbage! If our tax dollars bail out Chrysler (again), then I want a piece of that bailout to compensate for the 3 years or more of service that I'm not getting from my soon to be junked car!

Engine failed and was told to bring into their shop to evaluate. How do I get it there when I live more than 60 miles away? The extended warranty rep was an asshole!! I don't own the warranty, the company writing it does!! They replaced the engine with a salvage engine and I have no idea how many miles is on the engine. They refuse to disclose that info. Warranty states repair or replace and they replaced. Period. What a load of crap! Had to insist they change the oil! Within one month the resistor went out on the fan motoe for the heat and ac. Of course, not covered. Tie rod replaced. Transmission work. Windshield motor work, replaced 4 tires due to blowouts, dealership assholes and talks down to women!

I also had my oil changed at the Byers Dodge service center in Dublin Ohio, the engine oil separated and the engine gunked up, customer care investigated and refused the claim based on maintenance. They stated that this engine was made for use with man made oil and that the oil company and product was to blame, the run around was so great I ended up getting sea sick pills. I cave up and bought another car. Warranty yea right, what it really means it the company will go to war with you until you get "T" off and give up. thus problem solved.

I got my 2002 Sebring in June of 2007 from Carmax and it barely had 27k miles on it. I started having issues with it at the beginning of 2008 when my heat wasn't working. I took it in for a regular oil change and had them take a look at my radiator. They said I needed new thermostat housing. It was still under warranty so I took it to CarMax and they replaced the thermostat housing. Within a week it started overheating. I put in 2 gallons of antifreeze within a 2 week period. After about another week it appeared to be fine. In July it started doing the same thing and got to the point where on July 5th it just died on me. The coolant was getting backed up in the reservoir tank and causing the car to overheat. I ended up having to have it towed to Carmax (on my birthday!!) because it was still under warranty. They said I needed a new head gasket which they weren't equipped to fix so I had to have it towed (again... at my expense) to a nearby dealership. They were the ones that told me, after having my car for a week, that I needed a new engine. Luckily the car was still under warranty and all I had to pay for was spark plugs but it was a remanufactured engine not new. Would you believe that after being without my car for a month (yes a month!!) I had to take it back because it started smoking... AGAIN!! Turned out that they never did anything about the coolant tank (hmmm, wasn't that the initial reason I took the damn car in?). Again, it was still under warranty but I had to pay the deductible even though it should've been fixed the first time around. Since then it's been ok but stay tuned...

Kept smelling a very hot smell and taking it in to be looked at. The computer said nothing was wrong. Changed oil regularly and watched all fluid levels, but still smelled hot. Check engine light came on and had it serviced again. Light turned off. Light kept coming on and nothing showed up on computer. One day started running rough and I stopped. Husband came to take car home and call to get checked out. It stopped running. Had it towed to mechanic. Water in Oil and needed new engine. Our mechanic said it was not worth fixing. We owe 3 more years on this and now it sits in our yard. Chrysler would sell us an engine for $3000 plus labor. Why would I want to buy the same engine when it will do the same thing. Now we find others with the same problem. Never Never Never another Chrysler if they gave it to me

Just as other people on this site my engine blew (2.7L-V6) after putting much money into repairs on this vehicle and calling Chrysler last incident where my water pump went and cost about $950.00 to replace now my oil light started going on and when I went to get it looked at the engine was blown. I talked to Chrysler and no one at that facility would help with the water pump. Now I have a bigger problem. A car with a blown motor and no money to fix it. If anyone knows of a suit going on against Chrysler I would appreciate the information. This is ridiculous that a company as big as Chrysler is selling products that they know have defects.

The timing chain broke and damaged valves. Turns out it can not be fixed cheaply. It needs a new engine for the tune of $4,600 dollars or so. Of course the warranty has expired and the 70,00 power tran coverage ran out at 70,000. The cars worth $5,000 at this point, so not worth fixing. I've got it on craigslist right now and am taking a BIG hit with this POS car. It was a beauty though at one time, but now I'm paying dearly for it.!

Had this Sebring for a year and a half. It just turned over 60,000 miles and leaked oil and coolant all over my drive. Checked the dipstick and found that it was full of the mixture. Mechanics originally thought that I had a blown head gasket but the car never over heated. Upon further examination it was found that the water pump, which is poorly designed had gone out. Now I need a water pump, timing belt and kit, valve cover gaskets just to name a few things. So far the bill is around 2500.00 and we're not sure that will fix the problem yet. I love the Sebring and had another one prior to this but this will be the last! I will trade it as soon as possible. Still owe 6k on the piece of junk. Hopefully there will be a lawsuit or something to compensate all of us.

my car has had problems with the heat we had that fixed. several brake pads & rotors changed. We recently had the whole heating& cooling system fixed. worst of all the motor gave out without a warning. We kept up maintenance on the car. I'm a mom I don't go far. Take the kids to school, run to the grocery store. Im not hard on the car. I took care of it. Without warning, the motor revd up and died. we tried to start it again and their was a loud knocking. i was told it was the motor and that its a common problem in this car. I didn't know. no one told me. I still owe 6000.00 on this car. its going to cost me about that to fix it. I don't know what I'm going to do do yet. I can't afford to pay what I

I bought this car used from a dealership in 2006. Last Friday I got in my car to go to work. I started the car & I heard this awful grinding metal sound that became quiet after about 5secs then the car went dead. I tried to start it again & it sounded as if it were flooded. I had the car towed to my local mechanic who couldn't get any codes from the car to tell him what the problem was. He checked everything but the motor because the car is only 6yrs old & never thought the engine was a problem ( he's the only one who has made repairs & oil changes since I bought the car). My mechanic had the car towed (at his expense) to the dealership where I was told I needed a new engine because the #1 cylinder was no longer getting compression & the cost to fix it would be $4500 ( not to mention I'm still paying on the piece of CRAP). I am a single mom who doesn't have $4500 just laying around & I don't know what I'm gonna do at this point. Chrysler needs to take responsibility for their defective engine & stop screwing their customers. I'm telling everyone I know & will meet about how crappy Chrysler's cars are & how they take advantage of their hardworking customers.

Oil light flickered on Mon 03/03/08 went off. Tues. & Wed. no problem with light coming on. Thurs. morning the light came on & stayed on, started to pull into Auto zone the car shut off. Thought car needed oil, added oil, car started back, went about 10 more miles same thing. Oil light came on, car shut down, coasted into IHOP, had towed to Checkup car repair. They said nothing showed up on diagnostic check & after further research found engine needed to be replaced. You guessed it, $4500.00. I worked for Chrysler for 30 years & just retired. Was sure it wasn't engine with this just happening 1 time. Towed to another mechanic, same thing, the bearings were not getting any oil & messed them up , fix replace engine. Trying to find 1 cheap. Still owe on the car & it was bought new in 03. Carried it to dealer 4 or 5 times for noise in left front tire area, they said nothing was wrong. In 2006 air conditioner valve messed up $350.00 to replace at dealer. July 2007 air conditioner compressor went out right at 2,000.00 to repair. After warranty this car turned into crap. I can't believe Chrysler is not helping any one out with this engine problem.

Although I had 137000 miles on this car, the engine compartment was sparkling clean inside with the exception of coolant that turned the oil milky toffee colored. The engine blew a head gasket and cracked the head despite me shutting the engine down immediately when it made a noise and having it towed in to a friends shop. There was no build up or sludge whatsoever. No apparent reason for the failure except bad Chrysler engineering it would appear. I had changed my oil every 3000 miles and checked my fluids less than 48 hrs before the failure occurred. I was lucky I had a friend who flushed the engine and rebuilt the top of the motor for under $2,000. I love the design of the car but mechanically its a disasterpiece I feel the need to dump. Piss on Chrysler. I was fixing to buy a Chrysler 300 when this happened but not now. I'm going back to Toyota!
