The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. While driving 50 mph, the ABS and brake lights illuminated. The dealer stated that the control module failed and they replaced it on two occasions. Approximately six months later, the check engine light illuminated and the dealer stated that the transmission output sensor failed. They made the replacement. Approximately one year later, the reverse light and rear power windows were inoperative. The dealer installed a neutral safety switch. The failure mileage was 30,840 and current mileage was 72,000. The consumer stated when spoke with mechanic at superstition they informed her that the problem was the emission coil which controls the spark plugs. Updated 10/24/07 updated 12/12/07

I have had repeated problems with my '99 Dodge Durango that started with the engine light going on in September 27, 2005 and is now the need for a new cpm. The car intermittent stalls while riding down the road at 55mph or after idling at stop light & turning left (power steering goes out and car blocks intersection/traffic) - "no bus" appears on mileage, everything shuts off. Seems to happens on days when the environmental temperature exceeds 75 degrees and disappears once car has sat (wherever it stalled) for 20-30minutes. No diagnostic code appears when put the car is put on the computer and I was advised by more then one dealership that the problem had to get worse and produce a code before dealership or anyone else could diagnose the problem. Now that the 8 yr federal powertrain warranty has expired for me, it seems the problem is &always was that the powertrain control module (PCM) is malfunctioning &needs to be replaced. This major component is covered thru 8yrs/80,000 mi by federal law but even though problem began prior to 8th year, because this problem was not diagnosed until after my 8 yrs had been exceeded, it is now my $800-$1200 bill to pay (since Sept '05, have replaced most components of coolant system, intake manifold pan gasket, head gasket &still have problem with alignment/ball joints& repeated window modulator problems).

3 of 4 power windows failed to work within 2 years of purchase. Nothing was done to correct this, when addressed to the dealership I was told the total price of parts and labor (full price).

My 1999 Dodge Durango has had many problems. The ball joints have already been replaced but are still making noise when turning a corner. The electrical panel for the windows has been repaired twice and finally replaced. The back passenger window still will not operate. The fuel gauge is not reading accurately either.

Vehicle was purchased on August 21, 1999. The ball joints were same type as those on recall for year beginning 2000. Two years and four months later the ball joints failed. The front passenger side power window had broken along with the two back power windows. There was also a cracked serpentine belt, the tensioner had frozen, the throttle body was dirty and the gasket was leaking.

Dodge Durango 1999 ball joints failure. It has same problem as 2000 and up models. The consumer wants to know why the manufacturer excluded the 1999 model. The exhaust manifold had gone bad and was replaced, the drivers side window was inoperative and was replaced three times, and the A/C had gone out. The consumer requested reimbursement. The engine had a ping sound and was repaired 4 times but still pinging.

I bought a 1999 Dodge Durango from carter co. Dodge. I did not start having problems with anything until about 6 months ago, when the passenger rear door lock and window were beginning to have problems opening. The window finally quit working and now the door is also having problems opening. Just recently the rear tailgate door has started acting up also. Sometimes it will open and other times it will not. It wont open even if you use the key. I am afraid this is going to lead to a major problem if these locks and windows quit working all together and I have a problem getting out of the vehicle. After speaking with the woman that owned the vehicle prior to me, she informed me that she had replaced the door locks twice and was tired of having to do this, so she traded the Durango in. I am afraid this is going to become a saftey hazard, and would like to see this matter investigated to see if there are more complaints than just mine. Thank you patty gibson.

Transmission went out suddenly. We noticed it making a whining noise when shifted into reverse. This stopped when shifted into drive. After approx. Two days the noise stayed in drive. Changed the fan belt and checked other minor things. Read manuals and suspected trans trouble, took it in and it needed to be rebuilt. The pan was filled with pieces of metal. We also had to have the left upper ball joint replaced at 55,548 miles, this was going on a long time and caused significant tire wear.

Without any warning, and on 3 separate occasions my 1999 Dodge 4X4, Durango completely shutdown while driving. After the first incident, w/the ABS and engine light on the vehicle was taken to a Dodge dealer for service. It was found that a speed sensor needed replacing, this was done. Approximately 4 days later while driving on New York ave. In Washington DC, the Durango again completely shut down, on this occasion and subsequent ones, no warning lights were shown, no evidence was given that vehicle was about to shut down. On the last occasion Sept 17, 2003 it again shutdown while driving approximately 45 mph on leesburg pike in falls church va. Unlike the other 2 occasions this time it would not restart, although the engine attempted to turnover. It had to be towed, where it is currently undergoing another diagnosic, currently I am awaiting a call from the service technician. Additionally the car has 87,256 miles and 3 years old, the back windows are not working due to a failed power housing unit for the windows. The approximate cost is $500 for repairs.

Durango has given transmission problems including high rev before shifting, and rough shifting in general.problem will always occur if allowed to idle for a few minutes before resuming movement. Has appeared to slip on occasions. Pinion broke with vehicle in no apparent strain with very slight acceleration on take-off- caused major rear end damage as well as ruining one rear axle. Contacted Dodge concering problem since part broke was 1.5 inch thick steel which broke so smoothly, it appeared to have been cut. Part should have been with vehicle 50 years from now when it is in a junk-yard! was informed that since vehicle was out of warranty, that nothing could be compensated for. Fortunately, this did not happen on the open road, or my wife and children could have been injured or killed. I feel Dodge should at the very least reimburse us for this problem as well as the transmission woes!

The right rear window motor had to be replaced since it abruptly stopped working. But the real problems are with the car all of a sudden dying while driving normally on the road, causing the power steering and brakes to fail making it almost impossible to steer out of harms way if you find yourself admist a lot of traffic. Once the car dies it usually starts right back up again after a few minutes, but it has become so unpredictable that I'm afraid to take the vehicle back out on the street! the milage now is at 48000 and the problem started occuring at around 40000 first rarely but now more frequently.

While driving our Durango at night and switching the lights from bright to dim I have had the headlights go out. The last time the headlights went out, I had used my brights while taking country roads, but when I got on the major highway, I-35 my headlights went out completely. I was unable to pull off the side of the road and it was very frightening. I have had this happen when I went from bright to dim once before and I thought it was a fluke, this last time was scary. I had both children in the vehicle on the night of January 30, 2004. This is definately a hazard and could certainly cause an accident. My husband works 35 miles from home and while getting onto another major highway he had the front bearing freeze and the cv joint break. He was only getting onto the on ramp when this happened, thank god he was not on the freeway going 60 mph when it snapped. I had driven this vehicle just 1 week prior to this happening and had absolutely no warning that this might occur. It is my understanding that we should have heard some noise. The whole underside of the Durango was covered in grease from the bearing. This to me means that it had been maintained and this was a faulty piece of metal. While we had it in the shop for repair we were told we need to replace the whole front end suspension. This vehicle is not that old and we need to have it rewired and the front end re-done. I would rather put my money into a different vehicle but feel we would be putting lives at risk if we sold this Durango to anyone. I think that Dodge needs to take a look at their parts, because everything I have mentioned could be life threatening. If a wheel snaps while going 10 mh a poerson can handle the vehicle, if it snaps at 60 mph somebody is going to be hurt. The light issue is huge! you have to have lights, not only are you endangering yourself but everyone else on the road with you. I think it is time Dodge was held responsible and forced to fix these obviously faulty parts.
