Durango SLT 5.2L

Mine was surging while in park and while driving. My husband had been cleaning the throttle body on occasion, which would be a temporary fix, then finally changed the spark plugs and cleaned the throttle body. now no more surging, but faced with other issues, it now stalls out without notice.

Durango Sport 4.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 52,000 miles

first noticed surging 200 rpm idling or driving(sometimes), high rpm when started, bang throttle then would go to normal rpm. then in mountains, white out snow, started shifting in and out drive, with or without over drive ,check engine lite. turning off heater, didn't help(did with initial 200 rpm surging). 300 miles latter, got to repair shop. throttle position indicator resistance off, mech. said had more going on then what I could see, replaced.
surging, shifting- stopped, mpg went up 2 to 3 miles

Similar to Richard O. "My surge problem is while driving. Its like the tranny slips."

However, I additionally noticed that when I have it at idle and manually hit the throttle and release it - the engine still races at a high rpm for a couple of secs - but the throttle is released and back to the idle position.

If anyone has experienced this and knows the fix, any info would be appreciated!! :)

Durango SLT 4.7

Couple of months ago my durango started having a hard time "finding a gear" to stay in going up hills (it kept slipping). I changed the spark plugs etc and did some minor maintenance. A week and a half ago the check engine light came on. I took it to the dealer and by the time I got there the light had gone off. They ran a diagnostics and came up with 2 codes... neither of which really gave an indication of what the issue was.. just that there was an issue. The dealer told me if the light came on again to bring it back immediately and they would run the diagnostics again while it was on. It came on again I brought it back to the dealer... it came up with a third code and still couldn't give them a definitive. Gotta love those mechanics that wouldn't know how to change the oil in a vehicle without a computer !!!!!!! What happened to the good old days when the mechanics could actually diagnose issues without one.

The engine surges both in park and while driving.... I have had everything under the sun investigated and replaced... their final comment was that it was one of the cylinders misfiring... approx~$2000 fix.... this sucks.
