CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.

From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.

The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have already caught on fire.

Vehicle spontaneously caught on fire while I was at an ATM. No known cause. The vehicle was in good condition for its age with no major repairs needed and no significant body damage. There had been no major mechanical changes to the vehicle during the time I owned it. It was used regularly with appropriate oil changes and repairs as needed and had otherwise been safe to drive. I was unable to extinguish the fire. Thomson-McDuffie Fire and EMS was called to extinguish flames. Vehicle was totally destroyed/irreparable. This has been a devastating financial blow to me as a single parent as due to the age of the car, it was only insured for collision. It was also a terrifying experience.

Stalls when driving. No warning, steering and brakes do not work when this happens. No warning, no warning lights. After taking to multiple mechanics to try and find the issue, no matter the tune up or replacements, continues to stall. Will stall mid driving, when stopped at red light and gas is pressed to proceed, stalls, stalls when sitting in line waiting. This is very scary and should be recalled by Dodge. After reading that this happens often with this make and model. I purchased in 2017, to this day it keeps happening.

Past couple of weeks my 4lo light flashes, tries to go into 4WD on its own, makes clicking noise even when not running,4lock in slow turns or backing up. Transfer case will engage by itself while driving, or engage when unlocking or locking the doors, or opening the doors. Even after it has been turned off it will try and engage, with sitting there and no one having touched it. This morning, when I put it in reverse, it made a loud noise and it was hard to back out of my garage, 4 lo light flashes.

My 2005 Dodge Durango 5.7 4WD hemi, has been kicking itself into 4 wd, 4 lo and even neutral while driving down the highway. The car will be off and you can hear mechanical mechanisms at work. The vehicle going into neutral has happened only while driving on the highway and the the other shifts happen all the time no matter what the vehicle is doing parked driving or no key.

2005 Dodge Durango limited 5.7. my Durango locks its self into 4X4 on it's own. I cant disengage it. This happens either sitting still or driving down the road. I have carried it to the local dealership and they charged me $2210+tax to fix the issue. They said it was the front control module and the wiring harness. I got my truck back and it was still locking in 4X4. I carried it back and they said the wiring harness is discontinued so they repaired the wire to the transfercase and they said when they fix a wire it causes another to go out so they fixed it once again and said I can no longer use the warranty on it because it will only continue to happen and they will have to start charging me every time but when I got it back I went to the gas station and it locked in 4X4 when I was turning into traffic which caused me to turn wide causing me to pull into on coming traffic almost having a head on collision. I need this problem resolved. This happens on city streets and highway, it can occur sitting still or moving.

2005 Dodge Durango goes dead while driving on any type of road doesn't matter if on interstate or dirt road it just dies and you don't even know it as all lights and radio work. Results in lose of ability to steer, breaks, and speed. Have to put the Durango in park once it rolls to a stop than cut it off and back on for it to work again. Sometimes it will go 25 miles with out problem at other times 5 feet. No check engine light is on and took to an automotive shop and no codes reading on the diagnostic computer. Stalls while moving on highways, dirt roads, & interstates!

I was driving my vehicle while conducting a U-turn on boulder highway and the car shut off right in the middle of the street. Oncoming traffic was luckily able to see that my car was stopped and avoided hitting my vehicle which was stopped between two lanes. After a few min I was able to get the car to restart.

4 wheel drive engages by its self. Srv4wd light comes on, and it clicks when car isn't running. And when it is running, going slow in the city or going 75 down the highway. There is a ton of complaints on this situation with the 2005 Dodge Durango.

Upon filling the gas tank since the first time on June 15, 2017, and every time since then, the fuel always spits back, and all over the place, including on the gas attendant, upon any one walking by, on the car, and of course, on the ground. It may or may not be the fuel tank inlet check valve (fuel filler tube), but the dangerous safety issue remains. I have read that 20,000 Durangos have been recalled from 2005 for this issue, but for reasons unknown, even though my 2005 Durango also has this dangerous safety problem, I am told by the dealer that my 2005 Durango has not been recalled. If for some reason it has not been recalled, it obviously should be recalled because it has the same exact issue that the other 2005 Durangos have been recalled for. So why not mine?

Pulled into a parking lot and in park the car stalled, restarted it and it stalled again, did this 3 times in lot. Car stalled making a left hand turn lost all powers but restarted again, nothing on instrument panel. Car stalled on deceleration coming to red light lost brakes and steering rolled to stop to start it again, lucky did not hit anyone. Have had this checked out numerous times but error is not being picked up by the electronics monitoring on the car. This not only happened today it has happened on numerous occasions Dodge/Chrysler needs to figure out how to correct this problem!!!
