1999 Caravan air bags deployed when the consumer was rear ended. The air bags should only have deployed during a frontal collision, however the manufacturer wrote the consumer explaining, that based on their inspection, it was revealed the vehicle had severe damage to the undercarriage that would cause the air bag to deploy.

problem #20

Feb 052004

Grand Caravan 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 99,400 miles
Clockspring failure at 99,400 miles. It's been recalled 1996 - 1998 and 2001 - 2002 and 1999 Dodge durango's have all been recalled. Westport Dodge refused to fix under recall or warranty. It's a safety issue as the horn and air bag don't work. Cruse is out but not a safety hazard. Dodge should be required to fix as almost all vehicles I searched have this problem and it's the result of a manufacturing defect (it was put togather wrong, causing the failure).

Grand Caravan 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 130,000 miles
Airbag warning light illuminated (remains on). Both cruise control and horn are inoperative. Research has revealed that this is an identical problem related to the 96-98 recall for this very problem. Suggest that problem is not limited to those years. Vehicle mileage 133000.

Airbag light came on our 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan. Also the horn and cruise control were not working. Took it into the dealer to have it repaired and found out it was the clock spring. It was replaced at a cost of $232. Since then I have found out that this has been an issue with the Caravan model for the last couple of years and that there is a recall on the clock spring on the '96, '97, and '98 model years. Is this recall going to extend to the '99 model year?

Air bag light turns on and off while driving. Usually turns off after starting engine, but turns on and off periodically. Horn still works at this time and cruise control still works...for how long?

I have a problem with my 1999 Grand Caravan, the air bag light is on and the horn will not blow, and the cruise won't work. I got in contact with Chrysler and they told me they don't know of a recall. It is dangerous to drive a car with no horn, and what if the airbag comes out and cause an accident.

Jul 062004

Grand Caravan 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 103,000 miles
Air bag indicator light is on, horn and cruise control do not work on my 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan. Highly likely, the problem is the clock spring. There is an existing recall for 1996 - 1998 Grand Caravan with the exact same symptoms. Dodge will not fix the problem until there is a recall. They have said that it is currently under investigation for the 1999 - 2000 model year, but apparently that has been the case at the NHTSA since 2001. My last 8 digits of my VIN are XR412677.

problem #13

May 242004

Grand Caravan 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,730 miles
Vehicle was involved in a crash at approximately 70mph into the rear of another vehicle traveling at approximately 40mph in the same direction of travel. This would constitute the vehicle in question hitting at 30mph. Frontal air bags failed to deploy duing the event of a crash. Nothing has been done to correct the failure at this point.

I have a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan and it has recently had the air bag light illuminated constantly, in addition the cruise control and horn do not work. This is clearly the clockspring issue as identified by the NHTSA recent recall on the 1996-1998 gr Caravan. I will be having to pay for this replacement at a cost of $250. I would like this investigated as it seems awfully coincidental to the 1996-1998 problem.

Grand Caravan 6-cyl

problem #9

Mar 012004

Grand Caravan 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 45,000 miles
My "clockspring" wiring harness that controls power to the driver-sdie airbag, horn, and cruise control has failed on my 1999 Dodge grand cavan (~45,000 miles) VIN [xxx]. this is a safety issue and a clearly defective part that is involved in other recalls, yet Chrysler will not replace the part for free. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

problem #6

Jul 012003

Grand Caravan 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • miles
The clock spring failed, which resulted in the airbag, horn and cruise control functions being inoperative. (the related recall# 02V293000) the consumer's vehicle was not included due to the vehicle identification number. Ak the air bag light stayed on. The air bag light was intermittent and when the light had come on, the cruise control and horn would not work.
