  • 67,000 miles
On multiple occasions beginning in June '14 my 08 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT would have random electrical malfunctions including synced, intermittent activation of horns, front wipers, rear wipers, front washer fluid spray, rear washer fluid spray, and door locks. These issues would generally come together in "episodes" that could last from about a minute to about 10 minutes. These episodes could occur in rapid succession, separated by only a few seconds, or they might have 5-10 minutes or sometimes days between happenings. This would cause sudden loss of visibility while driving, as the sprayers would cover the windshield with drops but the wipers would not complete a pass to remove the fluid. It was particularly dangerous at night, since the drops would refract light and make visibility almost zero. This also resulted in being locked out of the vehicle on multiple occasions, once with children trapped inside!! while the problems were happening, the remote "clicker" could not be used to unlock or open doors or lift-gate. The only way to enter the vehicle was to use the physical key and force the lock to turn against the pressure of the powered door lock motor repeatedly re-locking the doors other intermittent problems: Transmission would not advance beyond 2nd gear, the check engine light would come on, the dashboard lights would flash and flicker, the back-up camera would flicker (the image is displayed on the radio's screen when the vehicle is in reverse), the dashboard displays would all be turned off or to zero (including tachometer even though the engine was running), and the engine would not shut off with the key switched to "off" and completely removed. Now, the wipers have stopped working completely, which is a perpetual safety issue, until the problems can be solved. Koons Dodge of tysons corner said the problem was the tpim (totally integrated power module).

My 5 children and I got into the van to head to my disabled child's doctors appointment. We had just pulled out and began accelerating when the car shut off. The wheel locked, as did the brakes. It seemed as though all electrical to the van was lost. Nothing worked. We were stuck in the middle of the road. When I tried to restart the vehicle nothing happened. The dash indicators did not come on, the power locks and windows would not work. It was dead. After the children and I were almost rear-ended by a ups truck, I removed my children from the vehicle and brought them to the side of the road and told them to walk home (fortunately we weren't far). At that point I returned to attempt to get it to restart. After about 15 minutes of blocking traffic and 2 near collisions, the van came back to life. I brought it back to my home and parked it. This issue began when, about 3 weeks ago, my vehicle wouldn't start. I then discovered if I took the key out then put it back in it would eventually start. I had called the local Dodge dealership and was told it was my win module. I called Dodge and was informed that there was no eta on a replacement part but I can pay out of pocket to have it fixed and would be reimbursed. After calling the dealership again I was informed that they didn't have the means to fix it. This is absolutely ridiculous! the vehicle I purchased to keep my children safe put their lives in danger. It's the only vehicle I have that will fit all 5 of my children. Now my daughter, who is disabled, cannot see her doctor today, and only lord know when we'll have access to a vehicle for the already scheduled future appointment. I refuse to put my children back into a vehicle that could kill them!

In January 2014 as I was driving my vehicle the gauges on the dash suddenly quit working, all of the indicator lights on the dash came on, the wipers turned on and the radio and entertainment system no longer functioned. I took it to a Dodge dealership where they eventually diagnosed it with a faulty tipm. The faulty tipm also caused the power door module to fail. Neither repair was covered by my extended warranty we bought with the vehicle and we spent $1200 for the repairs. The same thing happened approximately 2 months later, this repair was covered by the Dodge service department warranty of 6 months 6,000 miles. On January 11th the same thing happened again and my 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan again has a total failure of the tipm. 3 times in less than 13 months. I contacted Dodge customer care and they said that there is nothing they can do to assist with the repair and we again will have go cover E repaid out of pocket.

Vehicle intermittently does not start. Turn the ignition key and hear the starter click, but does not engage starter and engine does not turn over. Sometimes, on next try (turn ignition switch to off position and then back to start position) will start. Sometimes after many tries it will start. Sometimes turn the key to on, place shifter in drive, then hard back into park and will start then. Have replaced battery, starter, relays, and made no difference. Codes do not come up and dealer has no idea of how to correct.

When the problem first occurred, the car power would blip: The gauges would go to zero, the clock would go off, the lights would flicker on and off. I took it to the dealer and they said they fixed some wiring. After the car was returned, the problem persisted and worsened. Now, when the car slowed down (at a stop sign or light) the power would turn off completely, the engine would stall, light would go off, clock would go off, etc. I had to turned the key off and on to start the car again. I took it back to the dealer. They replaced two different parts - the ABS module and the main fuse panel for the car. When the car was returned, the problem persisted and got worse again. Now the car, when stopped or slowed down, power would shut down completely, shutting everything down as before, but now the key wouldn't turn. I couldn't turn it off or on or do anything for minutes at a time. The car power would suddenly turn back on it's own. So, once again, I took it to the dealer. This time they did a software update to several modules. I just received the car back from that visit on 12/17/14. The problem still persists. On 12/22/14, I lost power in the car while driving at a normal speed (30 mph) going down a hill. The power steering and brakes went out and I had trouble getting the car to a stop. I was finally able to put enough pressure on the brakes to slow the car and pull to the side of the road at the bottom of the hill. Since then, I've lost power twice when stopped at stop lights. I've been able to turn the key off and then back on. I called the dealer again. They said that it's most likely related to a recall and there was nothing they could do because they didn't have parts. They advised me to remove all other keys and rings from the ignition key. Even after that, I still lost power once so far.

Grand Caravan 6-cyl

  • 87,590 miles
Our 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan had an issue on the evening of April 21st, 2014 where the key just fell out of the ignition. It did not have an impact on being able to drive the car, but it just fell out. The next morning the vehicle would not start and the key would not turn or come back out once it was placed into the ignition. We had to have the vehicle towed to carmax where they completed the repair and we were fine with their service. We originally purchased the vehicle in November 2011. We were later notified by Dodge about a safety recall that involved a win module and they described the possible issues exactly as what happened to us. Since we had already gotten the work done and the vehicle has been driving great since carmax did the repair, we felt Dodge should reimburse us since that is what their recall notification stated. Now Dodge is saying it was a different part and they will not honor their own recall. Carmax was awesome and we are very happy with the vehicle, but not happy with Dodge since they acknowledge a manufacturer defect and refuse to honor it.
