CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

Long list of repairs on 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Air Conditioner was flushed and serviced 3 times before clutch seized up. the fix was to replace the compressor, belt & O-ring. Compressor by itself was going to be over $500.00. Get real!! this is 2008. I don't have disposable income anymore.

Compressor in my 1999 Dodge Intrepid 3.2 started making a very loud noise. I was told that the part would be $536.00 and tax 38.54 + 175.00 Labor. This car has been so expensive to fix I will never buy another Dodge again. Plus you can't use the a/c or the defrost. If you do the compressor will shake from the loud noise it puts off to where it will slice the belts.. This is not the only problem with the car at 90,000 miles the sped censor went out and it cost over 400.00 to replace and to have the battery changed you half to take the tire off the car because it is located under neath the motor. and I had to pay 180 to replace the starter because they have it squashed in so much you can loosen it but can't get it off and if you need to replace any belts on the front be prepared to make a 5 min. job a hour. you have to unhook all this crap off the front bumper.

Anyone who buys a Intrepid Good Luck and everyone keeps telling me I'm lucky cause I got the 3.2 and not the 2.7 because they are worse & the motor will go out and you might as well trash the car

I had the A/C repaired twice before this. What a pain in the ass! My husband always

told me Dodge's were pieces of sh*t! I should have listened.
