CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid with 119K miles on it. I just had my inner tie rod bushing replaced, in the last week my car has died twice on the freeway traveling 60mph, and at a stop light where I could not stop because car was shut off completely. I had to step on parking brake to stop the car. This is very scary driving this death trap.

First, the check engine light came on. I took it to the dealer where I got it from to find out that the egr valve needed to be changed, did this. Then I drove it for 1 week and the check engine light came on again, took it back to the dealer to find out that there is a problem with the crank shaft and that it will be very costly to have it repaired. All of this happened when I was driving it. The car began to shake and I got very scared. I only had the car for 3 months and in the 3 months all of these problems have erupted. I need some justice in getting these problems addressed so that the car can be fixed without cost to me when checking the internet and finding out that this is a major problem with these cars. It is something that Dodge knows that these cars have those problems and they are not honoring helping the owners fix them.

I purchased my 1999 Dodge Intrepid from a reputable firefighters in my area in 2004, this person reassured me that this car would be a reliable source of transportation for my family because he'd just put an engine and did other minor work, and showed and provided me with documentation. A year and a half later the car started running real crappy and eventually died. I've taken it to several reputable mechanics who gave me the same bad news that I was going to have to purchase another engine for my vehicle. Not only have I been unable to find this engine for a reasonable price but it seems as though no one wants to do the work on my car because they feel that it's a waist of their time and my money because "these engines are junk". how could this multi-billion dollar company do this us? please help.

A/cevaporator has gone out in my car. Additionally, the sensor on transmission went out 4 months ago. My mechanic says the exhaust system has rust spots. All people who have looked at the car say these problems shound not be happening on a car with only 48,000 miles.
