my son, my son-in-law and myself all own these trucks and all have a cracked dash. this is definitely something dodge should stand up and take responsibility for. truck owners should not have to pay for something to be repaired on their vehicle, when its obviously a manufacturers defect. we have contacted dodge and have all gotten the same response: "there hasn't been a recall, so theres nothing we can do for you". i know none of us will buy a truck from dodge again, not only because of the issues with the dash, but because of the poor excuse for customer service. and we would definitely not recommend the purchase of a dodge to anyone we know. this whole situation is ridiculous.

Mine doesn't seem to be as bad as some, but it is still annoying. Everything about

mine is the same as most that have posted and since I'm young and broke the only solution I have found doesn't fix the problem....but is just a cheap cover up. I am going to take blackfelt fabric and cut it to fit on the dash and anchor it with velcro. I've seen it donein

other vehicles and doesn't look half bad. It also eliminates the glare from the dash.

Since the average cost of fixing the problem is 500+ and it's not going to be covered

by Chrysler this is more economical for me. Other than that it's a great truck.

I HAD AN IMMACULATE TRUCK, THEN ONE DAY AFTER I HAD MY TRUCK ABOUT 3 YEARS I FIND MY DASH CRACKED IN THE PASSENGER CORNER, I ASK SOME FRIENDS WHO HAVE THE SAME TRUCK ABOUT IT, THEY SAID IT WILL GET WORSE.

IT DID, IT CRACKED RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE. IT IS PROBABLY TOO LATE BUT DODGE REALLY SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE MY TRUCK LIKE NEW AGAIN.

I guess I am more fortunate than the others making this complaint. My dash started cracking about a year and a half ago. (I bought the truck in 2001 as a repo with 10,000 miles on it. I have taken pretty good care of it.) At first I noticed a small crack by the windshield on the passenger's side. Didn't think much about it. Then a little later, another small crack. Over the pass several months the dash has literally fallen apart. I have huge holes all across. I agree, Dodge should accept they had a bad batch of dashes and make things right by issuing a recall and replacing them. I love my truck and have no intention of parting with it. Dodge makes great trucks, but in this case crappy dashes.

Ram 1500 318 V8

  • Automatic transmission

My dealer says it's the sun. My wife says it's no Armor all. My elected representative says it's the ruff road. This problem is the result of poor quality by the vendor of the dash. I bought this truck new in August 2001 in Monticello, Iowa. I moved to Florida in October of 2002. The dash started to crack 3-4 years later. I want Dodge to explain the reason for the defect, before I spend time and money on this dash. It would be stupid on my part to have it repaired until I know the cause. I have a hole, the size of a soft ball over my instrument panel and cracks over the whole dash. I want Dodge to stop the Bull Crap and give me a good reason for purchasing another truck from them. The truck is excellent mechanically. My warranty paid to replace the glasses holder which has broken twice. Some one screwed up the plastic interior parts in late 2001and Dodge doesn't care.

I originally thought that this problem was only isolated to my truck, but when I started to poke around on the internet I found out that it effects a lot of the 2001 Ram models. I am outraged that Dodge has yet to acknowledge the defect. Some of my internet research says the problem comes from the temperature being off when the dashboards were cast. This temperature change makes a weak dash and causes stress fractures. This is why the cracks tend to be straight lines and not the spiderweb effect that would show up on other parts of the vehicle, like the windshield. A news agency in Orlando Florida has aired a story about the problem and would like everyone who has this problem to contact them. The link address is as follows: http://www.local6.com/news/13227601/detail. html there is a video on the web site that shows damage to some of the dashboards and what you might expect as the cracks get worse. The report also sites that once the dash starts to collapse the wiring harnesses under the dash get damaged causing electrical problems. Dodge really should own up to their mistakes and stand behind their customers as well as their products.

we bought this truck used, with very low mileage 6 months later the dash started cracking huge chunks have now fallen out of it - very unsightly Dodge really needs to fix these for free. We have another Dodge truck that was built in the late 80's and we've never had a problem with a cracked dash. If Dodge doesn't fix this, we will never buy another Dodge truck again.

I understand Tom's pain; my '01 1500's dash started to crack in '03 and hasn't stopped yet; it's got a gapping hole in the dash toward the driver's side. I'm very embarrassed about it and haven't had the money to fix it myself. I think I'll call a Dodge dealer and raise a fuss about it; Dodge really needs to take care of its customers!

Let's see, in May 2007 I was cleaning my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 and noticed several cracks in the dashboard. I asked my wife if she knew anything about the dash being cracked. She said "NO". We are the only ones that drive the truck. I know I didn't do it, I believe her when she said she didn't so it. I called Dodge, they said " This seems to be happening with alot of the dashboards" I asked if they would fix it. Dodge dealer guy said," Yes, we can fix it for you, we will replace the entire dash". I told him thanks, I would bring it in to their dealership. I asked about paying. He says," Yes Sir, there will be a charge for replacing the dash." I asked why. He said," Dodge does not know how your dash was cracked, how are WE supposed to know if you didn't do the damage." What an ass, why would I crack my entire dash. I told him there were not only cracks in it, but there were large pieces falling down into the dashboard. Large pieces were coming off. What???????? Crap?????? Yes!!!! I am not happy...

Unbelievable problem to have on a truck that has been so pampered. Rarely driven on less than paved roads, maintained religiously, immaculate interior. Imagine my shock to discover several huge cracks in the dash! One starts at the top to the left of the steering wheel and runs all the way to the windshield, and the other intersects across. I have not yet taken it to the dealership for consideration, but after reading these posts I'm not holding out much hope for a reasonable resolution. What a ginormous piece of crap.

as i can see i am not the only one with this problem. my dash has cracked to the point that it fell apart completely. i am writing to dodge to find out how many people have to complain about this problem before they do something about it. i have also read that there are new agencies that have done reports on the issue. i would like to know if anyone has made a list of people that are having this problem. if not, i will start one, and send it to dodge. if they will not do anything then.... i have no problem sending it to the tv station that ran the story. What a bunch of crap.Pay for a good truck, get it next to paid off,do a complete detail, and find 2 cracks in the god damn dash.

Dealer say's NOPE... NO RECAL, but we can order ya one. Bull sh*t,

replace it for free, Look at my truck,... its a 9.5 out of 10 and that is cause of the cracked dash. Ask them to give me the $ off the price of a new truck what it would take to fix my old one and call it even. You know the answer to that... NO . They claim to have a 7yr 100,000mile body defect warranty, what the hell is that. I have no rust, I have a CRACKED DASH. Come out of the closet Diamler. fix our trucks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought the truck in March '03 with 26,000 miles, and only put on about 5,000 mi./yr.on it.I take very good care of it and keep it spotless. I went to clean the interior and was shocked to see a crack about 10"long from the defroster outlet all the way to the front edge of the dash. The local Dodge dealer says they haven't heard of this problem before! That's pretty surprising when I read all these other beefs! I'm not spending $500+ to replace it so if I can't get it repaired (glued, fused, whatever), I'll probably buy a dash mat to cover it up. That sucks,'cause I'll always know that damn crack is there and probably there will be more. Chyrsler needs to face up and replace these defective dashboards!
