60 miles from home after a 2,000 mile camping trip the truck suddenly stopped. Traveling North on highway191 in yellowstone park the dash lights started to flash and the truck died. I was barely able to pull off the narrow road. Emergency flashers didn't work and there was no cellphone service, snow was falling and trucks barely able to get around us, we feared for our lives. I opened up the hood and smelled burning plastic, the tipm was melted in spots. Finally a kind motorist stopped to see if we needed help, 20 miles further down the road he was able to call a towing service which took another several hours to get to us. We were towed to a Dodge dealership in bozeman where it will be another2 weeks before they can get it in.

Tipm (totally integrated power module) failed, causing vehicles engine to stall at 75mph on freeway. Condition resulted in a "no-start" scenario. Because of this failed tipm, the onboard diagnostic computer has no power, resulting in an inability to diagnose with obdii scan tools. This situation could have resulted in a possibly fatal accident, as the vehicle was in motion at 75mph on a major freeway with moderate traffic. When the vehicle stalled, all power steering and brakes were lost. These parts are prone to failing, but Chrysler refuses to accept responsibility. An aftermarket replacement is available at the price of approx. $600, but these parts are special order, and take several days to receive.

As I was traveling the highway, my engine starting smoking. I was extremely fortunate that I was coming up on a service center/grocery store in Idaho. There was indication on my dash instruments that my truck was operating abnormally, other than the smoke sifting through the hood. Upon my pulling over onto the the side, I opened the hood with used of heavy gloves and a towel and checked to see if radiator had fluid as the indicator light had read normal. As expected, coolant spewed out. I immediately closed it and waited for it tobe towed into Idaho falls to be checked by a shop that I was familiar with.

The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500. While driving at approximately 65 to 70 mph, the vehicle made a loud banging noise and was towed to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the axle fractured at the transfer box and damaged the steering linkage. As a result, the transfer box, steering linkage, axle, and five sensors were replaced. The vehicle was repaired. In addition, the engine stalled without warning while towing a large trailer. The vehicle immediately restarted, but the failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer multiple times, but was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 54,000.

This vehicle has been maintained according to the manual perfectly and in most cases maintenance done before required. On the date above I was driving home and the vehicle lost power. Since I was 2 hours from home I had to have it towed to the local dealer. Their repair order indicates that all 6 injectors, the dpf, crankcase breather filter, thermostat, ox sensor and 2 temp sensors must be replaced. In addition, the entire fuel system needs to be cleaned out including all filters, air and fuel and oil changed and filter. The bottom line is that all this work will cost me $7500. This truck has too little mileage to need all this work. This was supposed to be the last truck I would own figuring the cummins engine's reputation. Interested in whether this truck is an aberration or is it similar to trucks with the first clean burning engine?

The contacted stated that he powered down the vehicle and shifted into manual transmission when he noticed that the key was partially hanging from the ignition switch. The engine then independently restarted and erroneously accelerated, crashing into another vehicle. There were no injuries. The contact re-entered the vehicle and removed the key completely from the ignition however, the engine continued to operate. The contact then disconnected the battery and the engine finally powered down. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the central computer was replaced. The contact informed the manufacturer of the incident. The failure mileage was 117,000. Updated 1/14/14 the consumer stated one day the vehicle started up by itself while it was parked outside in the driveway. The vehicle hit the consumers other vehicles, and pushed them side by side. The horn was blaring and smoke was boiling out. He turned the vehicle off, by opening the hood and disconnecting the battery. Updated 01/16/14

While towing a fifthwheel trailer I noticed smoke in the cabin and stopped the truck. Upon opening the hood I found a fire at the firewall on the right side behind the engine. Failing to be able to extinguish the flames I separated the truck and trailer and pushed the truck away from the trailer and dialed 911. The truck was a total lose and after contacting Dodge I was told that my truck had already had the recall performed (08V641000) and that they had never had any further problems with these vehicles. Clearly the recall failed to correct the problem at the very least in this case. Chrysler sent an inspector ([xxx]) out to investigate and inspect the truck, his report stated that there were no material defects found. I have a copy of that report if you need. Chrysler has refused to honor the warranty on this vehicle as well. I have a video of the incident taken by my son who was with me at the time. The vehicle is still being held at insurance auto auctions 2299 w. broadway, phoenix Arizona. There was a police report taken as well as a statement to the fire department. Police report [xxx]navajo division of public safety department of law enforcement. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
