CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Stratus, Intrepid & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation. Also the 2.4L engine doesn't have the oil sludge problem.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

Ok so my engine hasn't broke down yet but every complaint on here sounds like my engine is about to. Just fixed my water pump about month ago because engine was over heating and I always noticed the knocking sound in the engine I just haven't had the money to get it fixed. Engine light has been on and I too was religious about getting my oil changes on time and for the 2 years I got my oil changes at the dealership where I bought the car. This car is almost paid off in December of 2010 and now I'm freaking out because I'm afraid its not going to make it till then. It has started to stall and the knocking in the engine has become worse. The even worst part is that I have the 02 stratus with the Mitsubishi engine it it... I'm supposed to take it to the dealer tonight but I'm scared to hear the reality of this mess. Does anyone know if a lawsuit has been started yet??? I wont be able to afford a new car and still pay on this one. Not with my student loans! Help!!!

Stratus 2.7L

I bought this car in the summer of 2007. It has been a headache ever since. I have put

about 4,000.00 into it so far. I have gone through an engine, gasket, water pump. You name I have gone through it. Right now I have a engine light on. Hey! I have even had my car stall in the f*ckin dead a** of winter when it's been, like 9 degrees. Thanks Chrysler for making junk. This make and modal is the worse car to get. I still owe on the f*ckin car.

TRADE IT! It's true, when the oil light starst coming out trade it ASAP before fail. The trade in value is insulting because everyone at the dealer already knows the problem. Someone needs to take Dodge into trial. No more Dodge in my entire life.

TRADE IT before it happens to you.

I am going to try to change the spark plugs to see if this fixes the problem. I keep my car maintained. I just changed the air filter and oil. I went to the DMV to do my emissions and failed because the light came on. When I left it went offf. I was on my way to get it checked again and it is on again. This is very annoying. And I hope to solve the problem before having to take it into the shop. If anyone knows answers to this problem. E-mail me at catskidshenry@yahoo.com
