CarComplaints.com Notes: Say what you will about the styling of the Ford Edge, but the bottom line is owners seem to love this vehicle. That is, of course, except in the case of it's dangerous, worrisome and unexplained issues with random engine stalling.

Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.

Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

Edge SEL 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 57,135 miles

I purchased my used 2007 Ford Edge SEL in July of 2010 from Varsity Ford in AA with 41764 original miles on it. It drove great for months until shortly before my family and I were to leave on vacation driving to Florida for Spring Break. The transmission seemed to start slipping both at low and high speeds. I took it into the dealership where it was purchased, and they said they Could Not Verify that this was happening. Have had it in to them 3 more times since then. Is this something that really can be fixed at a reasonable cost, after warranty has expired, or am I up a creek with this one, dealing with the dealership?

Edge LX 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 12,000 miles

Transmission jumps into and out of overdrive without warning. Driving at 70mph and transmission slips , rpm increase and then catches, back to 70mph and proper rpm.

Speedometer bounces while driving at 70mph between 70-80 but speed doesn't increase or decrease, transmission does not hesitate/jump. All this at 12000 mi. Dealer could not find any results with data download. Since then, a few hiccups until 26000 mile when pulling onto freeway , at end of ramp(uphill) transmission jumped, 4000+rpm, 40 mph. Pulled off, shut down engine, waited 5 min and started up , idle correct and drove at 1500rpm, 65mph rest of the 2hr trip with no events. Dealer had for next day, no results. They have hooked up an event recorder to push button when event occurs. Problem is that the two longest trips (3-4hr) were at 12000 and 26000. Don't expect that event recorder will have an event to record. An "off the record" comment from a ford mechanic advised that the 2007 edge transmissions are a problem needing speed control module and rubber gaskets replaced but no other detail. I don't want them to drag this past warranty and then tell me there is a fix for $$$$. Where does one go from here?

Edge SEL V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 64,000 miles

My transmission does not stay in gear or something. I can be riding down the road 55mph and I can GENTLY,SMOOTHLY, SLOWLY accelerate and it revs up like a race car. The tachometer flies over to 5-6 thousand rpms.

I can slow WAY down and try to engage each gear but when it gets to 5th and 6th gear it just won't go into the right gear or it will go but will not stay.

It is not a constant thing, but it RUINS my gas mileage. I get around 14mpg when I usually get 21. I have taken it to the dealership but it won't do it with them.

It started around 40 thousand miles while it was still under warranty adn now it still does it adn I have 65k and NO more warranty.
