Escape LX 3.2L V6

while in cruise control, car shifted into passing gear while going up hill.Touching the brakes did not disengage cruise control. Turned off cruise and car stayed at full throttle. The brake peddle was hard (like when the engine dies) and the throttle was wide open.Fortunately there was no traffic and was able to turn the ignition off and get off the road. Ford had it for 6 days and could not find anything wrong.Test drove several times and could not duplicate problem.
