CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Escape has problems where the engine shuts down while driving. Ford finally issued a September 2014 recall. Time will tell if the recall fix really solves the problem.

However the 2005 Escape also has a defect where the PCM (Power Control Module) fries at around 100k miles. Ford extended the PCM warranty to 80,000 miles, but only after most owners were past the mileage limit. Now owners are on the hook for the average repair cost of over $2,000 (!!)

It's a dam shame that Ford does not stand behind it's vehicles. "F" found "O" on "R" road "D" dead. It's so true.. I will never purchase another anything Ford again. I am telling people I know not to buy it also.

The Ford Co. gave me a really hard time when my CPU fried in my vehicle while I was driving it. The whole vehicle could have caught fire with my son in the car. Now the alternator went again, just replaced it in 2010.

Escape LS V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 68,000 miles

This was a pain in the ass! Because we had just completely fixed the transmission that went 2 months before.

My husband heard the knock (at ONLY 67K) and said get rid of it tomorrow!

Literally that's what we did....and we did NOT buy another Ford. NEVER AGAIN!!!

Escape Limited 3.2L /V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 92,000 miles

Same problem being reported by many; Experienced failed #4 ignition coil and plug in Jan2010; Dealer never mentioned problem being widespread (should have researched,

but didn't). Jan 2012, same problem occurred with # 6 ignition coil and plug...had all plugs

replaced when repaired. Feb 2012, same problem with two additional coils and plugs,

and now the PCM module also needs to be replaced ( $900 ) plus the cost @$600

to replace the coils. These dealers expect to secure peoples' business ??? They just

want to keep you coming back for more. Last they will see of me.

Escape XLS 2.8L V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 96,653 miles

I never missed an oil change, never had a lick of trouble with my car until the engine started making a strange noise. I limped the car to three different repair shops to try to get it fixed, then I got onto the interstate. Without warning there was one final clang noise and the engine completely died. Come to find out there was oil under my car so I had to get it towed 1.6 miles for $80.25, I had to get a cab to the place where my folks agreed to meet me with one of their vehicles. I heard from the shop where I had the vehicle towed that a rod had gone bad in the engine, cracked the casing around the piston rod, causing that piece to fall into my crank shaft....then it was thrown through my engine block and oil pan leaving a gaping 2.5 inch hole. The fix for this is a "new" engine. I have spoken to a number of people that agree a used engine or a rebuilt long block is appropriate. These cost from 1,400-2,600 with labor of 1,700 for a total from 3,100 to 4,300. Not to mention the time it takes and if I had to rent a vehicle this problem would have had a total cost over 5,000 easily. Apparently I am not the only one to suffer this type of failure....maybe Ford needs to redesign their engine to prevent these failures.
