My 2006 Expedition King Ranch shut down unexpectedly on my wife last weekend in the McDonalds drive through and the engine fail safe mode indicator came on. The truck restarted with out trouble but then cut out two more times on the way home. Fortunately it was not on the highway as she had my little girl and her friend with her! I researched the problem and it seems like Im not the only one with this serious issue. It appears to me that the throttle body or more specifically the TPS may be the issue. Is there anyone who has had a repair done that has eliminated the problem and can therefore positively ID the cause? I will be calling Ford like the others. This is obviously a serious issue that Ford needs to address!

I will be taking it in for service today but it if this is a common problem Ford needs to do something!

Fail safe message came on and beeped on my way to drop off kids to school. I had no idea what this message meant. Engine stopped and I was stuck, stopped in school traffic. Luckily no one was hurt. I had no idea the engine had died and people were waving at me to move, but my car wouldn't. I had stereo on, so I could not hear that the engine had died, I just thought I had run out of gas(even though I had over 1/2 tank). I can not imagine how bad this could have been! I called Ford dealer and had my car in for repair. over $700 to replace throttle body....they have obviously encountered this problem before!!!! Of course it was over manufacture warranty! This is not like brakes or tires or regularly scheduled services....this should not have to be done and puts peoples lives at risk. I called Ford as listed on another post and filed complaint. I encourage anyone who has had this problem to do the same....save someone's life!!!!! AND save your pocket book too.... if there are enough complaints about this!

This is the 30th complaint on this issue. While driving down the road, the Engine Fail Safe Mode engages, the engine loses power, for no apparent reason. You pull over if you can. Put the vehicle in park. Turn everything off. Shut off engine. Restart and if you are lucky, put it in drive and continue on. This is very dangerous, if someone is tailgating you and this happens, they could rear end your vehicle and people could have a major accident and die. Please recall and fix. Thank you.

My truck stopped last night with no warning at all and flashed the code "Engine Fail Safe Mode." I had difficulty putting on the brakes and turning the steering wheel. I was able to pull into a side street and shut off the car for a few minutes, then it started right back up. I've never had any issues like this or of any kind with my truck before but I'm REALLY upset that this happened and that there is no recall for it. Shame on you FORD!!! My extended warranty just expired at the end of April, just my luck! Thank God I didn't have the kids in the car with me or anyone behind me at the time. My husband will be looking into the issue this week.

In the meantime, I just filed a complaint with the Ford Customer Center (800-392-3673) and the National Highway Safety Board (800-424-9393) and encourage everyone to do the same. The NHSB said they cannot go by the complaints filed in this website but only by the ones filed directly through their hotline so please everyone call! Lets see if we can get Ford to take some action!

Vehicle has shut down 4 times in the past year while driving down the road. Vehicle locks up and shuts down. It gives you no warning. Luckly I have been near places to pull over and restart the vehicle. Of course when you call and ask ford dealership about it they are unware of what that means. I hope this doesn't happen when we are traveling on the interestate. Not sure why ford has not recalled this issue.

Update from Feb 26, 2013: Fail Safe warning light came on for the third time in less than a year. Vehicle locked up again drivin down the road. Again I was lucky enough to coast into a gas station. Turned off vehicle let it sit for about 5 minutes and then it ran fine.

Driving home doing 55mph I hear a dinging noise and see engine fail safe mode come on and I though really?! I was lucky to coast to the side of hwy and shut it off completely and restart. Made it home and back out again today with no further problem. I see there are many with the same complaint. My worry is if this happens to anyone trying to pass another vehicle and it shuts down with oncoming traffic! Or what about the person trying to make a left hand turn in busy traffic and it shuts down. Someone could be hurt at the very least if not killed. Ford needs to recall this SUV....any lawyers out there should jump on this and start a suit against Ford for this defect. It is way to many complaints for the samething. If it was the throttle then why aren't they replacing it...probably cause they know it won't fix the problem. I don't know about anyone else but $800 is alot to sink into this and it not fix the problem. Has anyone got any response from FORD? They obviously have had enough time and complaints to issue a recall before someone is killed. You can bet lawsuits will be filed if or when someone is injured or killed due to this problem that has been going on for several years that they are aware of.

We bought this vehicle from a well known dealership and was treated well while there.I called them a week and 1 day after we bought it to tell them of this problem and it was ho hum. This has happenend to me 3 or 4 times in the 6 weeks I have had the truck and my mechanic says he thinks it is the Throttle positioning sensor. We went to the parts store and they {Auto Zone} act like the dont know what this part is. I usually have my Grandkids on the way to school when this happens.First time we have had a Ford in many years and we are seniors with a fixed income and cant afford to fix cars .Thats why we traded to begin with.Ford does need to make a recall and get this fixed before tragedy happens.I think I am going to go to the news media with this story and let them have fun with it.We also never got a book with it and only 1 set of keys. Of course we can get these if we dish out a bunch of money. If anyone finds a sure cure I would sure like to know.God be with us that have this problem and keep us safe.

Had the three kids with me in the snow going along fine, then dead. The thing shutdown 6 times in about 15 min. The only good part was we were in the turn lane at the light. The very next day I had it go out at 55 mph. This time the fix engine light stayed on. I can't believe engine fail safe is not a recall. Maybe safe for engine but this is anything but safe for everyone one the road.

"Engine fail safe mode" Truck just stops no warning at all !I can't believe that Ford hasn't recalled this vehicle> I have owned 3 expeditions and this is my first complain> I am very concern about my family safety. It has happened about 4 different times at different speeds. Dealer doesn't seem to find any problems with it. SHAME on FORD!

Is Ford waiting for someone to get killed and then issue a recall? Have been a Ford owner for over 20+ years, but I will not buy another ford if this doesn't get fixed by ford soon....has anyone found a solution?

I really hope this problem is resolved...I dropped my vehicle off at the dealer in Crestview and did not get a clear cut answer as to why my vehicle went into fail safe mode. It happen just after I dropped my daughter off at her University dorm room too. Since the fix, i have shipped vehicle to Germany and am awaiting for it to arrive. I sure hope this problem doesn't repeat while my family and I are on the Autobahn. If Ford knows they have a problem, then they should be honest and refund our money for their mistake. I can see the temptation in buying a foreign vehicle when the American car companies treat customers like this. I want to stay loyal, but I am more of a fan of excellence as a standard!

I have been trying to explain this problem to my relative for about 6 month now everyone thought i was crazy they would get in my car and drive nothing would happen. I took the car to be service i was explaining the problem in was told it was a pump that was causing my car to just shut down spent about $200.00 about a month later same thing happen had my air on in the back i hear a thumbing sound turn the rear air off noise stop about a minute or so later fail engine safe mode pop up. I'm on the expressway and the just shut off i only have time to hit the hazard light and try to start the car up again. The crazy thing it always start right up...sad part i could have been killed!!!!!! on July 20, 2011 on my way home it's pouring down raining and this car is on my ass i hear a beep damn fail safety mode car shut off I had time to turn my hazard light on in make it home safety. Took the car to Auto Zone and they did a diagnostic test Throttle actutator is sucked closed. Call around that part is attached to the motor so of course they want me to buy the whole motor. Still waiting on answers.

Or until some one dies because of theis problem. This could of happen on the expressway and cause a major wreck. So and body with 70000 mile be careful, so far what I read this is when it happens. Hopefully I can get my money back from ford, what I pay for the repair.

This is the 4th or 5th time the car just shuts down.. I sent an e mail to Ford.. to be on the record. Asked what it takes for a recall.. a certain number of lawsuits or deaths? We will take the car in to the dealer this week. I wish they had taken bailout money.. maybe then they would step to their obligations.

Update from Nov 18, 2011: The car died again. Engine Fail safe light came on. Dealer knows of the problem.. wants to come in for diagonostic.. wife driving down the freeway with 2 children in the car.. lucky it is Southern California where there is traffic so she wasn't going fast.. but she did stop in lane 3 of a 4 lane highway..

I like others, driving, with my children in the car, loose power, failsafe light came on. Started up drove back home, will take to mechanic in am. I agree, this is not isolated instances. Ford should address the problem, but obviously they haven't had a lawsuit big enough to off set the cost to recall/fix the problem. Pray to god my family doesn't make the list.

Update from Mar 14, 2012: so took the truck to mechanic, yes the throttle was stuck replaced at $800 haven't had the problem since. No reply from Ford
