Really easy to fix on mine, It started acting funky after I was driving it and realized I was in 2nd gear going 50mph so I switched it to from 2 to D while in motion and the O/D light flashed and the trans clunked and didn't like whatever I did from that point on. Little did I know that all you have to do is unhook the battery for like 10min+ to reset the computer and presto! the light doesn't blink any more... no more clunks.. and for me I've been 50,000 miles without clunks. I've got 110000 miles on it now and that includes about 5000 miles of heavy towing! orig eng and trans.

Don't bother buying an Explorer. They're nothing but trouble. I've had mine for 5 years. In that time, I've replaced the transmission twice, and had it rebuilt once. The goddamn O/D off light is blinking again. You'd think I'd have dumped it after the first time!!! Other than the tranny, I've had to replace the steering wheel wiring harness twice, the wheel bearings twice, the brakes every three goddamn months, and the rotors with them. I've had to change the belt twice because the tensioner keeps breaking, and had one of the pulleys break right off the block.

I'm dumping this piece of sh*t. Think I'll buy a Chevy to spite Ford.

Anyone want to buy an explorer? it's in great shape! lol

Soon after purchasing the vehicle used, the OD Off warning light started flashing, of course there was no warranty. At first I disconnected the battery to reset the codes. This worked for about three days and then it started to flash again. I took it in to the transmission shop in Okanogan, WA and told them of the problem, and also mentioned the vehicle was surging. Just before I dropped the vehicle off for repair, the light went out, of course, and I told the mechanic about it. When I picked up the vehicle, they had not touched the transmission at all, as they said they couldn't find any problem with it. They did, however, do a half-ass engine tune-up to correct the surging problem, and reset the codes. The very next day, the OD Off light started flashing again, of course. I took it in to another repair shop this time, because the transmission shop guys seemed clueless and were going to charge another arm and a leg. The second repair shop took apart the steering column looking for electrical shorts, and not finding any, they reset the codes. The next day the light started to flash again and it is still flashing. They said not to worry about the light, as long as the OD still switches on and off, which you can tell by going down the highway at around 50 or 60 mph and pressing the button. You will feel and hear the transmission OD switching on and off if it is working OK. Got any duct tape to cover the light? Any bright ideas?

I was driving down the road and happened to notice the overdive light is flashing on/off. I pulled over and checked the rear end. I recently had rear end work done and thought that was it. I didnt see anything. I then checked transmission fluid and it looked spotty couldn't get a real good reading. I then unhooked the battery and it is still coming on.

I've had this happen 3 times now. The first time it happened was about a year and a half ago. I had a complete transmission service done. It temporarilly fixed the problem. Then 3 months ago it went out again. I took it in and and paid over $250 to have it serviced once agian and to have one of the codes reset. They said it was due to a short in the cigarette lighter wiring. Then here 1 month ago guess what. This time my husband disconnected the battery for 5 minutes and reconnected and it reset the codes and it has been doing fine so far. I did take it back to the shop and they couldn't find a thing wrong. So my suggestion for anyone with this same issue is to disconnect the battery and reconnect it. I would only use this as a quick fix. But i will never buy a ford explorer ever agian. The third time was the charm.

All i have to say is that after the belts were tightened, the car ran better than ever. And maybe that i am 17 and drive the car crazy, is why the transmission gave out.
