My Ford Explorer 1999 gas pedal fell off the firewall while driving at 55 mph on the highway in the fast lane. There was no shoulder to quickly drive to on the left of the highway, so I had to quickly move over a few lanes to the right to get to that shoulder lane. It was a very frightening experience to loose vehicle power all of a sudden and to not be able to accelerate on a highway to get over to the shoulder. I almost was in a accident due to this.

After getting my SUV towed to a repair shop. They said that the accelerator pedal bracket spot welds were broken. All three welds broke right off like others have talked about on this web site for a 1998 Ford Explorer at

http://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/Explorer/1998/accessories-interior/accelerator_pedal_bracket_spot_welds_broken.shtml

The fix was to use three self drilling metal screws to mount the accelerator pedal bracket back to the SUVs firewall. We had to put some rust preventative stuff on teh engine side to not promote rust of this new mounting solution.

I think this mounting design from Ford for this accelerator pedal bracket should be considered a good candidate for a class action law suit. I wounder how many people went through this failure of the gas pedal while driving where it did cause a serious accident where people were injured or died due to this bad design.

I'm just glad I was OK and that the SUV slowed down instead of speeding up like the Toyota's cars do.
