I went to back my Explorer out of the driveway yesterday and suddenly it seemed to lock up and there was a horrible grinding sound. At first I thought I'd hit something- checked- nothing- and tried again with same result. Saw that the rear passenger tire was tilted. Had it towed and the tire practically tore off as it was hoisted onto the flatbed. The drive arm had essentially torn off. If this had happened on the highway we would have rolled over. How can something this serious and dangerous just happen with no warning?! Have already replaced the struts and wheel bearings (while warranteed)- now this is a $1200 job- they are replacing assembly on both sides as other side doesn't look great either.

The same thing happened to me last night.I was driving about 20 mph near home then i felt a noise on the back of the truck, and i thought i had a flat tire. My surprise was that the entire tire was rolling zigzag. I got scared because it could had happen earlier while driving at 65mph.!!
