I bought my car not even a year ago and it has died 5 times on me already. It's so embarrassing! I always have to call my uncle to help me out with it. I really like my SUV, and it generally runs good but at times it starts messing up. The gauge is inaccurate, i.e. let's say I pump $5 of gas, it will mark that I pumped $10 or $15.

When I let people borrow my car I can't keep track of how much gas I have so I'm scared to drive it unless I pump more gas in it.

I bought this truck in October of 2008 with 21,000 miles on it. Then in January, of course when the 3month warranty was up, the gas gauge started. I would fill up the gas tank then the next day I would turn the car on and it would show that I have no gas in it at all and the check engine light would come on and stays on for days even after the gauge fixed itself. Damn truck will be the last Ford I buy!

I contacted the dealership when my fuel gauge stopped functioning and was told it was not a recall item. I see now that someone else has also had this complaint early on in the ownership of their vehicle. As you can see, I have very few miles on my explorer. It is well cared for and has had not only this problem, but broken visor mounts, and a cracked back door panel at the back window as well. All of which should be recall items. Notice the gas gauge showed low when the day before I filled up. It was cold that morning. I filled up again then it popped back up. A few days later it's shows past the line and the "check gages" light is on. I filled up. seems fine. no lights. really crappy mpg though. I hope it's not a fuel pump problem.

I have had the same problem happen with my gas gauge, but now mine gauge will drop to show less gas than I actually have. I went from a half a tank of gas to about a quarter tank in amount 15 miles. This problem coupled with rust, a clunk, an antifreeze leak that I can not find. I think I will just trade it in. All this with only 66,000 miles. First and last Ford I will ever own.

The fuel gauge is not working again. It happened the first time when we had about 30k miles on it and the dealer replaced the sending unit/float assembly (located inside the fuel tank) under warranty. NOw the same issue is happening again. Filled it up with 17gal and it still shows less than a quarter tank and the low fuel warning beep keeps coming on. Maybe by tomorrow it will read half full. Will file a complaint with NTSB and wait for a recall...

The gas gauge will not show the correct reading. If it's on 1/4 tank and you fill it up, it might take it a day or two to start showing full.

I am having a similar issue with my gauge; I can’t really say it only happens when it is cold as now even when it is warm it does it intermittently. I always track my fuel usage and always fill up every time I get gas so it eventually kicks in after about 15 to 100 miles. When it does "kick in" it pops right up to normal. Recently I have stopped waiting till empty to refuel, (I am now refueling at about 1/4 tank left) Seems to be helping. Time will tell.

Explorer Limited V6

When I fill up, it often takes up to 15 minutes before electronic gauge reads full until then it read - - - - -. Now thats annoying. Whats really bad is that it is also inaccurate. I ran out of gas with it reading 37 miles to empty while towing a boat on the highway. Loved that hike. Dealer says, huh, interesting. They replaced some computer module under warranty but it didn't solve the issue. So now I simply never let it go below 100 miles to empty. Seems a tad bit ridiculous. The only thing worse than no gas gauge at all is an inaccurate one.....

Explorer gas gauge will from time to time stay on empty after filling the tank. Took the truck into the dealer and was informed that the computer did not register a problem with the gauge so it shouldn't be a problem going forward but was informed to begin using Chevron gasoline only. After using Chevron gas (tank #4) the problem continues.

Was told that the additive "Techron" would somehow fix any problem I may be having even though I was told that no problem exists according to the computer detection system they used on my vehicle.

Explorer LX V6

The gas gauge was replaced, tank dropped, float, pump replaced under warranty at approx 33,000 miles. At 45,000 miles the gas gauge failed for the second time. Dealer replaced again and would not cover under warranty since the first fix was only warranted for 10000 miles. Service manager said tough luck no help.

Ford can go out of business and lay off everyone for the attitude and poor quality. Never again will a Ford be one of my vehicles.

Fill the car one day - and the fuel gauge doesn't register AT ALL. 2 hours (and 50 miles later) it finally does go up to "full", but now it lags terrribly.... unless you believe an Explorer can get 30mpg. Took the car in once, was told it was sulphur from cheap gas, they drained the tank, added cleaner, and made me do several tanks of Chevron Techron. (Except I was already buying Chevron gas.... so this sounded fishy) So I'm out probably $50 for the difference in price. And it didn't work. Called them back, and they said they'd had 3 more people come in for the same problem, and now they are replacing the fuel pump and assembly. Car is in for that right now, covered by warranty at this point, but very frustrating.
