CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.

Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

Due to the flimsy plastic part on the vent diverter this issue will only recur if replaced. The actual part is relatively cheap, most of the cost is due to labor. As the part is faulty in my opinion I will not replace it until I know that the materials used will last more than 5 years.

This is a safety issue as it prevents the vehicle from defrosting/defogging properly, it's only a matter of time before someone dies from this as I understand it is a known problem.

This is the 4th Explorer that I have had and the second one that has had this same problem. What really pisses me off is that it is just a little plastic part that breaks and renders the whole vent system worthless. Why would they use a plastic part suseptable to temperature changes in such an area as it take a major amount of labor just to get to the area that needs to be fixed. Why can't Ford force their supplier to make the correction so that the vent system lasts for the life of the car?

I'm experiencing a problem with the a/c in this car. When the air is on, you can feel more air coming from the defroster on top of the dash, than the vents that are facing the passenger and driver. The only way to get the car to cool, is to close the outside vents and then turn the fan to 2. A while ago, I heard a loud pop or bang from the front of the car, like something hit it. After further inspection of the vehicle, there was no damage to be found. Also, where the condensation from the a/c drips from the bottom of the car, the water hits part of the transmission, which has started to rust.
