Driving alone in an area with poor cell coverage, heard a noise, like a pop, the car immediately lost power. It felt like my gas supply got cut off. The "wrench" light message came on as did the front air bag light. At this time, the engine was rough running & loud. I pulled over and turned the engine off. I waited a minute & started the car, only to feel the car running rough and loud. Now the "engine" and the "front air bag" light came on and stayed on, the "wrench" light disappeared. I shut the car off, walked 2 miles towards home until I got cell reception to call home. Forty-five minutes later my husband rescued me. The Explorer started up, he drove it home (8 miles) with the "engine" light on and it ran fine. The "engine" light is still on.

Driving on busy highway at 60 mph with young grandchildren when lost power. Almost killed ourselves making way to the shoulder of the road with cars swerving around us. Problem was throttle body which, as I have learned through research, is a perpetual problem for Ford vehicles. The dealer was good about replacing the part right away and at no cost, but the part is the same one which was subject to failure. Just spoke with customer service at Ford and I am extremely disappointed that they are not more pro-active about making this part more reliable and mitigating the risk of drivers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My new 2016 Ford Explorer suddenly cut the engine power while driving, it was late at night, glad I had my husband with me-- pulled over to shoulder to re-start engine-- this happened about 3 times while trying to get home. Took it to the Ford dealer first thing in the am-- the check-engine light was on but it didn't cut out. I am awaiting the response from the dealer.

I was driving with my kids on 6/22/2016 and my car nearly came to a complete stop, luckily I was not on the freeway and pulled over to the nearest parking lot. The engine light, airbag light, and a wrench light all came on although the air conditioner and radio stood on. I called Triple A and had my car towed to my place because I had 3 small kids with me and could not lug them to the Ford dealership with me. Later that evening I started the car and it drove so I parked my car in the garage and the following morning I drove to Galpin Ford and the same issue happened again. I called Triple A again and had it towed to the service dept, the Service Consultant was very helpful and gave me an ETA on getting my car fixed by Monday. I told him that I needed a loaner and he said they only have rentals and that I would need to take it up with Ford on getting a credit if I wanted to get reimbursed. I needed to call an 800 # and was given a CAS #, I hold the dealership that I needed a vehicle that was equivalent to the Explorer due to my family size and they said they could not accommodate my needs. I spoke to a manager and made an issue of the car rental and he stated that they will move my car up to the line and that I was lucky because I came to the dealership without an appointment, my car was fixed within the next hour. I stated that this issue was unacceptable being that this was a new car and that my family could have been put into real danger. After the car was fixed , I requested a complimentary oil change and a thorough check of the car as I am planning a trip to Oregon and I was given a business card to get into contact with the Service Drive Manager. The service manager called me on Monday stated that because I had not purchased a service plan that they would not give me an oil change or do a thorough service check and he stated that the car should now be okay because the throttle was now fixed. This is/was my first Ford vehicle and I honestly do not think that I will be a returning customer due to the lack of customer service and concern for my family.

Explorer XLT V6

Loss of power when on an interstate road. Wrench light came on. Was not able to accelerate. Completely unsafe and unacceptable on a brand new car.

Update from Jul 22, 2016: Brought the car to a Ford dealer. We were away for the weekend. Dealer looked at car on Monday 6/27. We were told it was the throttle body and there was a 23 day backorder on the part and that Ford would not pay for a comparable vehicle rental until the repair was complete. Utterly unacceptable. Dealer was able to somehow obtain the part and replaced it for us since we missed 3 days of work and were unable to get home. Otherwise Ford would have us waiting at least 23 days and we would be out thousands of dollars to rent an SUV. Furthermore, my son would not have been able to drive a rental since he is only 19.

Explorer XLT 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 9,000 miles

On July 21, 2016 while driving on a 6 lane highway outside of Columbus, Ohio my vehicle went into the "limp mode" with the wrench, engine and airbag icons showing. Fortunately I was able to coast into the right side of the highway. I started and shut off the engine several times but it stayed in the limp mode which was basically an idle. I call the nearest Ford dealer to make sure they had a loaner car. Germain Ford said no. I called Chapman Ford which is further away and they said they had a loaner car. I then called Roadside Assistance and demanded my explorer be towed to Chapman which it was. I investigated and found this is a known problem which happens with relatively low mileage explorers; therefore, I assume that a new supplier has come into the picture and proper testing has not been done. Without warning and going into limp mode is very dangerous and someone is going to get hurt or killed because of this. The system can be designed to give us a warning that it is going into limp mode shortly and not immediately unless the problem is going to cause major damage. I doubt that this throttle body issue needs to shut down the engine immediately. I should know more than most as I retired from one of Ford's engine manufacturing plants form the QC Dept. I mentioned this Germain dealership as when a vehicle is under warranty and it needs repaired, there is no excuse for the customer NOT to get a loaner car. I did a study once and found Japanese fix their cars immediately or even secretly so the vehicle problem is not on the customers mind very long.

Explorer Base Model 2.3L

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

Just bought a new 2016 Ford Explored Base model last March 2016. Today July 23, 2016 while I was driving with my wife and 2 sons and a new 18 months on a 45 mile/hr busy road the engine just turned off and a wrench and air bag light appeared on the screen with a message to see owner's manual. The gas pedal would not work but the AC and radio was still on, it seemed like the car was on "neutral" mode, thankfully it was after rush hour so the traffic was light and I was able to steer the car to the middle center lane. Turned the car on and off maybe 3 times before it went away and we were able to drive the car. As soon as we got home, got online and saw all these posts about the same issue I got really scare I could not believe this is happening on a new car. Will call the dealership tomorrow or Monday, I don't trust driving on the highway and this happens. Hopefully they can shed some light as to what needs to be done, but by the recent posts here it seems like this is a major issue that Ford is dealing with. I just don't understand why they still sell these cars if they know there is an issue with the "powertrain". This is the last car I buy from Ford if they don't fix my car right...

Update from Jul 27, 2016: Updating my complaint: I took my car to the dealer where I bough it Monday morning 7-25-16 since I bough extended warranty on it I didn't have any problem getting my car fix they told me they would check my car Tuesday afternoon thanks God my car was fix the same day they found bad Throttle body thanks to Baytown ford TX I hope never have to go back again...

Explorer XLT 3.5L

  • Manual transmission
  • 14,100 miles

This is a significant safety issue with the 2016 Ford Explorer. Driving on the highway, the engine will drop to idle. There will be no response to any accelerator action after that. Slowly putting accelerator to floor, and the engine remains at about 800 RPM. This occurs in the middle of traffic. My family is in the car. THIS IS NOT A UNIQUE PROBLEM. I have read many complaints about this and they are all practically identical. Pull of the road . . . turn off the car . . . start it back up . . . get on the road . . . works fine until it happens again. Three times to me so far. Occurred while on vacation. Now my car is at an unfamiliar Ford dealer over 200 miles away. Please "www.carcomplaints.com" get Ford to fix this issue now before someone gets hurt or killed.

The throttle body failed on my fairly new 2016 Explorer. Was driving in OKC at 45 mph and car went to 0 mph in about 2 seconds. Was able to coast to a parking lot. AAA towed to my dealer. Dealer gave me a loaner which I likely will have for a month since part is back ordered. Called Ford and asked why parts aren't available. They had no excuse but offered to make my payment for the month!

My wife was taking my in-laws to the airport when the vehicle lost all power resulting in her having to pull over. Had the vehicle towed to the local dealer where I was told they have a few others in the shop for the same problem, and there is an urgency for the part, but they don't know when it will be in. I contacted Ford Credit asking for assistance or credit on my monthly payment, since this was a known problem, there is no recall, I don't get a rental car and I am stuck paying for a car I cant drive. We are a split family, wife's side retired from GM anytime we take her car in we always get a vehicle off the lot to take home for our inconvenience. My family works for Ford and I get hosed...looks like they will be losing long repeat customer.

I've had my 2016 Ford Rxplorer for a few months. While driving, I suddenly lost power and the car decelerated to about 5mph. I had no power in the gas pedal. Or any other mechanism. The wrench light came on and the engine light. I slowly pulled over and restarted the car. It ran for a couple of feet and lost power again. I was finally able to get the car home after 3 more incidences. I had the car towed to a local Ford dealer. They told me it needs a throttle body part to be replaced. The parts are on back order and there in no ETA from Ford on the part. The dealer told me to take the car and if it happens again, to pull off to the side of the road and wait 3-4 mins and restart the car. This is not a solution.

June 19, 2016 I experienced the same as others wrote about, going about 45 mph and all of a sudden the speed drops to 5 mph. Very dangerous, took vehicle back to dealer and they said it was throttle body assembly and that the part is on back order. They told me that the part should arrive on Tuesday of next week, we will see if that is true. What I was unhappy with was the fact that they were not even going to offer me a rental. I had to call Ford customer service to make a claim to get a rental. Then I had to call my service representative to get details on what was going on with the vehicle. Not the best customer service at the dealer. I feel we are lucky this did not happen on the freeway. Scary!

Explorer XLT 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission

I was on my way home from Ocean City, Saturday night, at 9:45 PM, and was sitting at a light when a wrench lit up on my dash and said something about a service call, and then when I tried to accelerate, my truck would hardly move. Luckily, I was in the right lane, and was able to drift/move slowly off the highway and drift into a Citgo station. Now take in mind that I live 2 1/2 hours from where this happened, and it was a Saturday night, and nothing was open at this time.

I got my manual out and found the 24 Hour roadside assistance number, which they were able to get me a tow truck. And I had purchased the extended warranty but the 24 hour help line could not advise me on anything, just to call my dealer in the morning. Which the next day was Sunday, and no one was open til Monday. The tow truck driver came and was very nice, waited with me til my daughter could come pick me up (luckily she was already in Ocean City with her friends so I didn't have to wait too long). They towed my truck to the nearest dealer, which is still 125 miles from home. Had to go get a rental Sunday, using my credit card, since the dealer wasn't open til today. They say they will cover the rental, so that's a relief.. But I am still waiting to hear from the dealer, on what is wrong with my truck. From what I am seeing with all the reviews though, is that they will probably tell me its the throttle body when they finally call.

And whenever it's fixed, I will still have to drive 2 hours to pick up my vehicle and then at least another 2 hours to return home.

I bought this truck new so I wouldn't have this problem, I had a 2006 Ford Explorer that I had for 10 years, and had 237,500 which I traded it in on this one, because I didn't want to get left sitting (my 2006 truck never left me sit) But my "new" truck , a 2016 Ford Explorer with only 5,000 miles on it on has left me sitting, I am not real happy right now.

Update from Jun 13, 2016: 3 PM, Monday, 6/13/16 - Ford dealer called and told me that it is the throttle body that needs to be replaced, AND it is on back order, no idea how long it will be for the part to come in, although they did put a rush on the order. The advisor then said that I am welcome to come pick up my truck and they will notify me when the part is in. I asked can this happen again while I am driving, and she said yes .... SERIOUSLY, you are telling me to pick up a car that will more than likely stop again ???? She put me on hold for around 10 minutes, then came back on to say that if I am not comfortable driving it, then I am welcome to keep my rental car, really?? So here I am making payments on a new vehicle that I cannot drive. And no idea on when the part will be in.

Update from Jun 17, 2016: 6/17/16 - update on the back ordered part, Sherwood Ford says the part is scheduled to arrive by June 30th, so that leaves me in a rental that is not at all comparable to the vehicle I had purchased. I have filed a complaint with Ford regarding the issues and back order of parts, which to me, should be a recall issue if the manufacturer cannot keep up with the parts needed to fix a problem, if there are that many going bad? The Ford customer relations dept called me and said they have escalated my claim and hope to come to a resolution to this by the 24th, guess we shall see...... more updates to come.

Explorer Limited

Similar to others who have reported this problem, I was driving when suddenly my vehicle drastically slowed and was unable to accelerate beyond 25 mph. At the same time, the wrench icon appeared. Luckily I had just exited from a major highway to the back roads near my home. I had the vehicle towed to the Ford dealership where I had purchased it 4 months previously.

The service department at Cavalier Ford (Chesapeake, VA) inspected the vehicle and determined the problem is the throttle body. The part is on back order, but they were able to locate one in NY and are having it sent to the dealership. They also arranged for a rental car. I have always had great service from this dealership. So, at this point just waiting.

Update from Jun 22, 2016: The dealership (Cavalier Ford Chesapeake, VA) confirmed it was indeed the throttle body. It took a little over 3 weeks to obtain the part. However, the dealership provided a rental car for one week then a lease car from the dealership for the remainder of the time. Our service team manager, Nicole, called everyday to provide an update and check in with us. Certainly, I am extremely disappointed that a new vehicle had this problem, but the dealership handled this situation in an excellent manner.

I was driving on a very busy road about 45 mph, when suddenly my car slowed down on its own and would only go about 20 mph. The wrench light came on and the engine light as well. I had my 2 teenage daughters in the car and all 3 of us were terrified as cars were speeding by us. It was a one lane road with a small area to pull off on the side but I managed to pull over as much as I could. A flatbed transporting a mobile home had to drive in the middle of the road to avoid me (luckily there was no oncoming traffic close at that point).

I had to turn off the car and restart it a couple times. Then on the 3rd try it drove normal again. I made it home and called Ford Roadside Service. They transported the car to our dealer and we waiting to hear the results.

Needless to say, the entire ordeal was stressful. If I was on the highway I don't know what I would have done. This problem has to be corrected, and a nationwide recall should be made as well. Someone is going to get hurt or even worse die in an accident because of this. Ford will be in some real hot water if this is not fixed!!

Had a 2007 Chevy Suburban 154,000 miles and was repairing things every 3 weeks, so why not get a new car. You're not supposed to have problems with a new car. Explorer Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 10,100 miles

I had just started up a long bridge in heavy traffic when the Explorer suddenly lost power, the check engine light and wrench light came on. I was able to drive at very low speed into a lane under construction. I eventually had to be escorted off the bridge at the same low speed by a Port Authority police car. Ford Roadside Assistance had the car picked-up at the off-ramp and brought to a dealer. The dealer called me today to tell me the throttle body needs to be replaced and is back-ordered for a week. They did give me a loaner. There are only 10,000 miles on the SUV. I'm seeing a lot of similar issues on this page and suspect it's going to turn into a wide-spread problem.

Update from May 28, 2016: After being told the ETB might take a week to get, the dealer called me two days later to say Ford had rush shipped the part, it had been installed and was running like a champ. I was told the new ETB had been "re-engineered" to correct the problem. So far, so good.

I have a 2016 Ford Explorer XLT with 5,000 miles and last week my wife was sitting at a light, went to hit the gas and it would only go 2 mph! Took it to the Ford dealer and after week of looking at it they determined it needed a new throttle body. I'm pretty disappointed as I convinced my wife to switch to the Explorer after she had years of enjoyment with her Buick Enclave.
