Purchased the 2004 Sport Trac from a private owner for my 16 year old son. Test drove fine. Picked truck up and drove home fine. Next day taking it to register and get tag, it starts being sluggish when changing gears. The next day it would sputter and slip gears. Took it to Ford place and was told it needed a rebuilt transmission to the tune of $1500-1800. Took it to a transmission place and it was even more. Ended up taking it to my dad's mechanic in the city he lives in (2 hours away) and he said it is caused from some pin or something cutting into the metal casing, causing metal shaving to fall into the transmission, causing it to slip gears. He said that was a problem with 2004's and that he had fixed many of them due to the same faulty casing design. Said it would be $1500 or less. Other than the transmission problem, the truck runs great. Has a ton of extras and my son is thrilled with it. I pray once this problem is fixed that the truck will last him years and years.
