Rear window regulator bit the dust just a few days ago. This is the third window to do so within a one year period. Really a pain in the ass. First time it was the passenger side window breaking when we were leaving Lake Havasu City in 113 degree temperature. Had to partially disassemble door panel to manually pick up window and tape in place. $400.00 later, good as new. A few months later, drivers side goes same scenario although temperature outside wasn't as bad. Driving down the freeway doing 70 MPH wasn't pleasant though. Another $400.00 and good to go. Now the rear passenger window regulator breaks and I have a decision to make, pay another $400.00 or try and fix myself. I hear parts run about $150.00 from dealer if lucky. You think Ford would make a part that would last more than four years.

This is a nice truck with the exception of the window regulators. I have had to replace 3 so far. I expect the fourth to occur anytime. Should be a recall. When I wrote to Ford, I was told it is not a safety hazzard. Try 60MPH on the highway and your window drops into the door and tell me it's not unsafe.

I have a 2004 Ford F-150 and this is the 2nd window regulator that has failed - both the driver's side and passenger's side. The latest one failed this weekend while my wife was pulling a horse trailer. The window abruptly fell out of its supporting bracket and sounded like someone shot at the car. My wife almost swerved.
At $450 x 2 = $900 for window regulators you can be sure I WON'T be buying another ford truck after this one.
My grandfather worked at Ford for 30 years and this was my first Ford vehicle and my first American car. Huh.

I don't have much to add. My complaint is like everyone else. They need to recall and fix their crappy design. The 3 tabs broke on regulator. They wanted $180 just for the part. I told them to stick it. I emailed ford and complained and they said it was out of warranty and their was nothing they could do. Great customer service. Thanks ford. I put 3 screws in it and fixed it. Bottom line, first and LAST ford product I will own.

So this is just ridiculous. I have had three of my four window regulators go out. It started with the left rear window falling about a year ago. Due to the economic times and the lack of time to deal with it, I just brushed it off. That was just over a year ago. About in February of this year my front passenger side regulator also went out, with the window falling to the ground. Once again the lack of time and money, I have wedged a 2X4 into the doors to prop the windows up. Now, on Halloween, the drivers door window collapsed and is now sitting in the door. What a piece of crap. I cant believe that there are this many complaints about the regulators and nothing has been done about it. This is an obvious problem and the people at Ford need to take it into consideration and fix the problem. I have been a Ford man since I was a wee lad, now I am looking to greener pastures on the other side.

I bought a 2004 Ford F-150 Supercrew Lariat 4x4 truck last October. When I took it home from the dealer, I rolled down the passenger-side rear window and it just dropped inside the door. I took it back to the dealer and they fixed it. I thought it was just a random incident or that it just came off the track and no big deal. Well, a couple days ago (now that I've had it for 1 year and no warranty) I picked up my kids from school and as we were driving home the driver-side rear window (the other one this time) fell down inside the door. I had no warning, didn't hit any button, and suddenly wondered where the wind was coming from. At first I thought my kids rolled it down but hey didn't. I tried to roll it up with the power control button on my arm-rest and nothing happened. All I heard was a grinding sound and remembered what happened the first time around and went "awww great!" This is the second window in a year and after researching heavily online I discovered I'm not alone. I am dumbfounded as to how this issue with Ford Window Regulator/Motors and Cable/Pulley Assemblies has not forced a RECALL!!! How is this possible with all of the complaints posted with NHTSA and online forums? I have been told this isn't a recall issue because it doesn't affect emissions or safety, but if that's the case, how is this not a safety/security issue??? I'm lucky that my window didn't shatter and hit me or, more importantly, my children! Not only that, but what if this had caused an accident? Nobody should be driving down the road, hear a loud clunk, freak out, and swerve off the road! Not a safety issue? Seriously? And what about this being a security issue? How in the hell do I keep my window up and lock my truck while I'm shopping for groceries or something? Not only could someone steal something inside but they could steal my truck! If this isn't a security issue then why do I have remote locks/alarm? Something has to be done about this! I don't have $400 to throw away in this economy! Thanks to this website I filed my complaint with NHTSA, confirmation #10289767, and suggest you all do the same. Here's some info:

In my particular situation I'm not too sure if my regulator is bad but as a result, the cable and cable-winder are FUBAR. As you can see the winder that holds the cable is completely stripped out and when I took everything apart I had to cut the cable due to the rat's-nest. What a way to spend football/baseball Sunday huh? lol...I took the door panel apart, had to suspend the window with rope while I pulled out the window slide and assembly, take this crap apart, and then reinstalled window into slide and wedged 2x4's to hold window up. Needless to say, my driver-side rear window is permanently shut and I am not paying a dime to fix it.
I have owned Ford's my whole life and this is my 5th truck. Thanks alot FORD! Fix your SH*%!!! This power window cable/slide/pulley/motor assembly is total CRAP. I am gonna sell my truck and buy a Toyota. I've had it.

Same as everyone else. Washing my truck and noticed my rear passenger window was down. Thought to myself that seemed odd as I knew I didn't put it down. Wouldn't go back up. $425 later (new regulator) and all is well. Didn't think to Google and see how common this issue appears to be. Love my Ford truck so I'll deal with it but it does seem like Ford created a crappy product.

My 2004 F 150 drivers window was down, when reaching my destination I rolled up the window. Once up, a funny noise and now the motor will just run, window wont go up or down, but I can make it go down if I push it down by hand and like wise to put it up. Then to top it all off, doesn't the passenger side start to act up today WTF!!, rolls down when it wants to and would hardly go back up, time for Ford to swallow their pride and take care of their loyal customers!!! Not all of us are making the money that the big wigs from Ford are and can blow $300+ to fix our vehicles like its petty cash. So how bout it Ford, take care of us, and make this a recall action.

Well, it's about the same fun experience that everyone else has written in about. I put my window down. Then I hear a cracking sound and wouldn't you know the window never came back up again. I could hear the motor running but nothing was happening with the window. That was back in 2007 and it was my driver side window. I went and had it fixed because you can't really drive around with you window down in Florida in the summer time. It sucked to pay the money to have it fixed but I did, what else was I supposed to do. I didn't really think any thing of it because other then that I really loved the truck but, just about two months ago the passenger window went, and then a week later the rear driver side window went. It was the same exact problem. Now come on you have to be joking. Well if it is a joke, it's not really funny. Thank god for wood shims. That's what I have holding my windows up right now as I type this. I just can't bring myself to go shell out $700 to get what is obviously a manufacturers defect fixed right now. If there is any help out there for this problem would love to hear about it.

I will make a separate complaint but just to make you aware... this is the 2nd (count them TWO) power window regulators that have failed on my FORD F150 TRUCK. The first time was just 100 miles out of warranty (imagine that)... the driver's side window just FELL down into the door frame. That was probably 2or 3 years ago? I was pissed at the time because of the cost and just being out of warranty but just thought it was a fluke... then this past Friday... BAM.... there goes the passenger side window. Same thing, just driving along and down it goes into the door frame. Another $300.00 bucks! So this time I think, this can't be a fluke and I look it up on-line. There are tons of this same problem. MAN UP FORD AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!

Just like the hundreds of complaints i have already seen about these 04+ window regulators failing my driver side failed yesterday. once i took it apart and worked on it for hours with no success i realized it would have to be replaced as i searched on the internet for where to buy a regulator i came across many people complaining of same problem as angry as i was this enraged me, people saying that up to 3 windows failing in less than a month, and ford has done NOTHING? you know what F*ck ford! now i will be constantly worried that even when i replace the regulator it will fail again and again i would like to find the engineer who designed these and beat the hell out of him! I am going to replace this one this time but if this happens again I am taking off my lift kit rims tires stripping interior driving this truck to the desert breaking the ignition pouring whipping my fingerprints pouring gas all over it lighting up a cigar smoking it and tossing it on the piece of crap. call my insurance company and report it stolen I WILL DO IT TOO! good luck to the rest of you if you wanna join me in the desert with your truck let me know.

Was pulling into drive at home. Window popped like a rock hit it and then fell down in the door. After getting the door apart I discovered that the main problem was a piece of plastic on the verticle guide broke and allowed the cable to break free. Upon a closer inspection I discovered that there were multiple pieces of plastic that had broken. One way or the other it was doomed to fail.
Obviously from what I have read here the entire mechanism is defective.

Window Motor Regulator Part# 1 4L3Z-1823201-CA is made inferior. It has 3 chinsy plastic tabs that break and when replaced with a like part will only result in breaking again. The part needs to be re-engineered and if "Ford" doesn't issue a recall, it should at least acknowledge the defective part and replace at no charge as people take their vehicles in..
As I tried to raise the drivers side window, I heard a clunk-pop...The motor kept spinning when I pressed the window switch, but no action with the window.
After taking the door apart and finding the that the 3 flimsy little plastic tabs in the window motor/regulator broke, I went to the Ford Dealer up town and found that he most certainly was familiar will the problem. I just wanted to purchase the cable winding pulley that was broken inside but he said they only sell the whole unit at a price of 183.74.
So I left without purchasing it and thought that I would check online to see if I could get it cheaper. I actually thought about it for awhile and thought of a retrofix for the cable winding pulley by inserting 3 screws. I then put the regulator back together but had trouble reattaching the pulley cables. I gave up for the night since it is dark but will try again in the morning.

I had to Saran Wrap my window on Saturday at 3pm in the afternoon until a dealership opened or the Ford call center. My right side window just dropped down. This will be the 3rd time I've paid a Ford Dealership to fix this problem. There is no recall. So by my problem, I figuring that ford cant product repair parts that last more than 6months. Since having this truck my only main issues have been the windows. The back window, the front and back on the driver sider. And every time I go into a dealer ship they just give you the cost and not even say, this seems to be a problem. So to anyone who reads this. I am on my 5th Ford truck, because I have always loved ford trucks. But Ford doesn't seem to be able to produce a quality product anymore. If I have to open my check book at the dealership in the morning, I am getting on the internet and phone with every office in Washington DC that controls consumer complaints, affairs, and business practices of Ford affiliations with their dealerships. Its time the cosumer stop falling victim to big corporations and their defective products.

Hello y'all
Guess, I am not the only one then, interesting...my 2004 F-150's rear passenger window just went out, I just bought this truck two months ago from Carmax, warranty expires 30 days, so oddly, the window regulator broke on exactly the 60th day after purchase! 09-11-09! ain't that interesting??
Now I cannot find a window regulator for rear in Autozone and Napa etc...they just have the front, the Ford dealership (I hate car dealerships) wants to sell me the whole part (it comes with the motor) for $180! They claimed not having the regulator by itself which is all I need... Is there a way to get Ford to recall this $HITY part??
I am trying to gather people everywhere having this problem to file a complaint against Ford, we bailed out these suckers and now they are turning their backs to us!
I am mobilizing the peeps on Facebook and trying to get a this local reporter/investigator to pass this story on TV, again, Gripe, rant, yell, tell the world about your AutoBeef!!!!

09-09-09, heard a loud "Pop" noise when using the electric window button to bring up driver-side window. It is the window regulator. Ford dealer is asking about $400.00 to replace the entire regulator.
We took off the door panel to get to the regulator and saw the window regulator "guide" (that guides the cables through the pulleys) is cracked/broken.
We are going to try to redesign this guide and make it stronger with plates & brackets so it does not happen again. If it doesn't work we will replace it until it happens again.
If it does work, we will do the same to the other windows as they fail.
Plastic guides on our BMW are notorious for this as well. We can't fix that design, though.

so just like all of the others owning a ford f-150 that has this problem, im severely pissed. Im a college student who has worked so hard to buy a pickup like this and now im just dumping money into it, money that i don't have. I have to get the problem fixed because i live in north idaho where the weather isn't too friendly. So my question is to the ford company: Is this how American vehicles are really made? If so, i might as well go buy foreign, which would only cost me a tenth of what this truck has. And then i could afford to be fixing it every other week. By the way this has happend twice, first on the drivers front, then on the driverside rear...

Just an hour ago...driving down the road...pressed the front pass window switch...loud POP! like a rock hitting the window...window falls down...back to the house...removed the door panel (so far pretty easy, about 20 minutes)...regulator cable toward the front is slack.
Apparently this is happening to just about every F150 on the road. I'm not surprised as I had a Crown Vic and a Grand Marquis and they had the same problem...Ford makes crappy regulators with plastic gears/pulleys.
It's really strange that the regulator is not available in the aftermarket. Practically every other part is. Would someone please tell the Chinese so they can start cranking these out.
I'll order the part from the dealership tomorrow (I hear it's $200 to $400 - OUCH!) and, based on the problem reports on just this site, I fully expect the remaining 3 regulators to fail soon.
Oh well. I guess it beats a new car payment.
Update from Sep 9, 2009: OK...bought the part...$165 at Champion Ford in Houston...found a website with detailed R&R instructions...took out the old regulator and installed the new one in under an hour with simple hand tools.
Now that I'm an expert (which I really didn't want to be) I figure the next THREE should take about 30 minutes each.

****SECOND WINDOW**** My 2004 Ford F-150 driver front window stop working. It was once again the regulator. Symptoms when you know it's about to fail: Window starts becoming slow to operate. Then WAM, it stops working all together or... the window itself will fall inside the door. This was the case of my passenger rear window some 7700 miles earlier. Cost then $378.44 I have to more to go. Then the process will start all over. Why? because it was not in warranty and should be considered a factory defect.
Total cost $409.04 Ps. the parts are cheap to buy. However the wire cables are all wound up inside the regulator and the tension can be a hazard if you dont know what your doing.

This is the 2nd time this has happened with my truck. Last night we were on our way to an event not far from home. It was a venue where you park outside with no parking attendants. We pull in to the parking lot and hear what sounds as if someone loaded a cannon with a big rock and shot it straight at my passenger side door. I knew exactly what it was. Luckily this time the window didn't shatter inside the door. This time it stayed rolled all the way up, that is, until we got parked. Then it slowly rolled down and we had to pack up all of our valuables in to my wife's purse and cross our fingers that nobody would steal anything. The last time I had this replaced it was $328 in Richardson, TX. I'm pretty resourceful so I'm going to scour the internet for the cable and replace it myself. Good luck to you all and someone at Ford needs to help us out with this. That's over $1200 if I replace all of them on my dime. How much could this part possibly cost to make? At least ship us a free one and instructions to remove the door panel or something.

I am the original owner of the truck and take very good care of it. I rarely ever roll the windows down and only drive the truck 1-3 times a week less than 20 miles a week total. The local dealership fixed it easily by replacing the power window regulator assembly. Ford Motor Co. refuses to aknowledge the problem despit the many hits I got when I Googled it. The first time it happened I paid for it out of my own pocket. The second time Ford comp'd me a large portion. This time Ford is waffling on it. Yesterday (8/24/09) we replaced the 3rd window in our 2004 Ford F150. The first two were replaced under warranty but the 3rd one cost us $445.86; that's after a $50 discount that I had to fight for. We had the same problem with all three windows -- the window dropped and wouldn't roll up again. I called the Ford manufacturer this morning to get a refund and interestingly "they've NEVER heard of the problem with the windows dropping"! I read some of the complaints listed on AutoBeef to the agent and she told me that 70 complaints is a small amount for the 70,000 vehicles they built in 2004. She took down my information and is keeping a log of the complaints. Please call the FORD manufacturer and FILE YOUR COMPLAINT with them 1-800-392-3673. When you call the number press the button for "recall" then press the button to speak with an operator and explain the problem with your windows. Save your receipts in case they do decide to recall the vehicles. Have your VIN # ready when you call. You can also go online www.genuineservice.com. This was the first of three times that I had this issue. Missed the actual event, but when I went to get in my truck to go to work one day I saw that the right rear door window was down and wouldn't go back up. The power window motor made a low whirrr when I pressed the button but no movement out of the window. Didn't know that lots of folks have had this issue so I just chalked it up to bad luck and paid for it. The repair is fairly easy, according to the service manager, they just open up the door and replace the regulator assembly. The parts are expensive but labor is fairly low due to a short repair time. Fortunately I live in California and it happened in the summertime so I didn't have to worry about rain or anything like that, but it was a pain in the ass driving around for a few days until I could get into the dealer with a window that was always open.

Today while stopping for an accident, I hear this loud POP! like something hit my door. On my way home my driver's side window started slowing sinking into the door. When I got home my friend looked at the window and manually pulled it up, but could not find anything wrong with it. Pushing the up button did nothing. After reading everyone else post. Sounds like my window regulator is broken.Great. In todays economy how is a Grand Mother of 60 on disability going to fix something like this?

This is the second window regulator that's gone out on this truck. The driver's window popped and sank painfully into the door Thanksgiving leaving us to drive the full length of California in winter without a window. This one is the rear passenger side window. Same pop then sinking. My husband managed to pull over and catch the window before it sank all the way down and for now we have it wedged up with a piece of rubber hose. We have a 1995 Silverado with 230,000 miles on it and it's windows seem to operate just fine!!! Cost $450 dollars to fix the first window. Haven't gotten a quote on this one, but clearly this is a defective part and should be recalled!!! What does Ford think they're doing???

What a shame - within 90 days, my driver door window regulator and my rear passenger door window regular quit working. Here I am almost 2 years later and still am driving around with my windows in the "UP" position. I guess I am lucky to have a friend who is a good mechanic. FORD should absolutely no questions asked issue a recall for this item. Read the complaints and realize that FORD made a mistake. It would go a long way to create good will, would not be relatively expensive compared to the ill feelings the company is creating because of this issue. Time will tell - I for one will be watching!!

I'm with the rest of you. What a piece o crap design. I was going to town when I hit the down button and the window went down and stayed there. Pulled it up with needle nose pliers and wedged some paper in it to keep it from falling again. Went to local parts store and their book showed repair part but it was wrong. Can't find it online anywhere. Dealer wants $150, have to buy entire assembly, they don't sell just the cables and pulley. I'm calling Ford on Monday to voice my complaint and looking for sight to join class action suit. Love my truck but don'tlike the fact that now the warranty is over stuff starts falling apart. Also had ring and pinion gear fail in rear end, extended warranty covered it but cost me $100. Just made last payment a couple months ago and was looking forward to driving cost free for a few years. Only has 54,000 mi. on it.

This was the drivers side window. The window simply fell down inside the door, the motor was still attempting to lift it but the mount bracket and all simply twisted with cable. As with others the windows aren't used very much. I just wonder what the ford engineers were thinking. A new model should have a better designed window and not something that doesn't work as well as the old style. Hopefully the new part was redesigned and will hold up better. In many of the older trucks at least you could go and buy a $80.00 motor and fix it yourself, even buying this unit online was 200 just for the part. Can't wait for the other windows to fall too.

Rolled down the window this morning, It's started to rain and tried rolling it up. All I heard was a crackling / grinding sound. Later I removed the door panel and found a birds nest of cabling in the window regulator. I found all these posts and now feel pretty depressed. I currently have duct tape holding the window up. Not a happy customer.

Another regulator problem. I have taken it out and the defective plastic connector is obvious. Small part, easy fix BUT where do you find it! The problem with this is bad enough but for Ford not to provide a fix (a real fix) like a metal replacement connector is just bad business. I too will be looking at any other brand than Ford for my next tow vehicle.
Has anyone been able to find the replacement regulator on the net?
Bad Ford! Really bad....

6/18/09 I heard a loud pop when I went to let down my rear passenger side window. At first I thought the window had shattered, so the next day I took it to a window repair shop only to find out the regulator had gone bad. I was very disappointed when I found out it would cost me $400 to have it replaced.

well it's me again and it looks like i'm having the same dang problem again, but this time it's the front drivers side window. I went to let the window down and I heard a loud pop. I already knew what it was because I already had a regulator replaced in the back window 2 WEEKS earlier. I contacted the dealership only to be told there is really nothing they can do but replace the regulator and quoted me a price of $400 plus dollars. In my frustration I have contacted Ford and am awaiting a response back from them. I am hoping they will place this issue on recall and provide QUALITY replacement parts.

This truck belongs to my husband and has been deployed off and on quite a bit. The back passenger window has probably been let down a total of "FIVE TIMES".
This is really UNCALLED FOR ... my FIVE YEAR old was sitting back there in her car seat, what if the window had SHATTERED when it fell????? This is completely ridiculous! We have THREE FORD ... and have had NOTHING BUT ISSUES, LIES AND PROBLEMS from two of them over the last year!! We will definitely be moving on to TOYOTA OR SOMEONE ... BESIDES FORD!!!!! Someone who is going to stand behind there products! RIDICULOUS!!! I have to fork out 335.00 for something that is there problem ... as their trying to BE CHEAP!!!

2 months ago I paid $525 to have one window repaired, 2 weeks ago the second window fell inside the door and it is being held up with blue tape right now, yesterday the third fell inside the door! I am at my wits end and this is going to end up costing me over $1500! Ford should cover the expense, there are too many other owners with the same problem!
