1 st try - Started with hard steering. My mechanic installed a new belt, which vehicle needed as it was original to vehicle.

2 nd try - flushed old power steering fluid and replaced with new fluid. Old fluid was dirty, but no signs of metal wear.

3 rd try - Checked power steering pressure which was very good. checked steering knuckles on shaft, steering rod and ball joints. All checked out good. Last thing it could be is the rack. Called a local Ford dealer to order a rack only to be told that there was a NATIONAL BACK ORDER, with no arrival delivery date to dealers. YOU THINK IT'S A RECALL ISSUE!!!! NOT HAPPY. Where are you NTSB?????

Crud gets in joint in steering column bearing joint that is placed down by the left front wheel and is not protected from road salt.etc. Can work itself out, and go back to turning with normal resistance, but returning to being stiff more frequently. Mechanic quoted $150.00 for part + 2 hours labor or about $300 to fix.
