CarComplaints.com Notes: Power steering problems started rearing their ugly head in the 2010 Fusion, so you'd think Ford had plenty of time to make sure those problems didn't creep into the 2012. But here we are.

The Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) is a mess. It fails at an alarming rate. Don’t believe us? Take a look at NHTSA’s data on the subject.

And much like the power steering, we’re still seeing the same throttle body failures that started in 2010 continue in 2012.

Bought a 2012 Ford Fusion three years ago, it was used and had about 50,000kms (about 31,000 miles). Almost half a year after I bought it (three years ago), the car started to jerk when it would shift. So checked the transmission fluid and it was completely empty, there was nothing in it. Then filled it up, it was working fine for another half a year, and it has been doing the jerky motion ever since. The check engine light will come on when I go on the highway (freeway), and it will blink for a bit, and then either stay on or go out. Done with Ford, will never buy another Ford again. And if you're thinking about buying a 2012 Ford Fusion, DON'T DO IT! Pick something else!

I have had the car repaired twice. It broke down again after only 2 days. The car is only 3 years old and I still owe on it. So I now own a car that I am paying on, and it does not move. So much for Ford Tough.

Next time I won't buy a Ford, that's the first thing I will do. Garage maybe thinks because I'm a woman I don't know what I'm talking about but the thing is my husband had it too when he drives my car. We have been many times to have it fixed but they say everything is normal. They heard my complaint but did nothing for it. I will go back to Honda if this is not fixed, never had any problem with Honda.

Fusion LX 3.2lV6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 28,000 miles

Noticed jerk when shifting lower gears. Took vehicle to trans shop and owner drove it saying "seems fine to me." Took car to dealership and all systems checked off as working fine and fluid levels OK. Makes you wonder what planet they are on. Trans works better if I let it warm up for 2 minutes before driving.

Since they continued to check off as fluid level OK looked up in cars' manual and found the Fusion has different dip sticks for the different models. Using this info I added a quart + and centered in normal range. I also did as manual says to do and drove it 20 miles before checking and shut motor off before shifting gears slowly through their settings. I did these things according to the book in order to feeling comfortable adding fluid. Amazing! Car does run much smoother, but let warm up till RPMs level out and engine runs smoothly. Also I never noticed any sign of a fluid leak underneath car.

Car now has 34,000 mi and am thinking of having a fluid and filter change to see what the fluid looks like and see if that also makes smoother. I know mileage doesn't indicate change, but auto is a major investment so I'm willing to try any possible route to make it run better. Besides the trans, I am very satisfied with the Fusion and comfortable ride. Hope this will help someone.

This car has the jerkiest, most annoyingly "unsmooth" transmission I've ever experienced. It's like riding in a car with someone who is just beginning to learn how to drive a manual transmission and hasn't figured out the clutch timing. Very embarrassing when you have passengers in the car.

I took the car to three different dealers after I purchased it CPO in February 2012 at 17K miles. Each one of them told me the same thing: The transmission is functioning as expected for the 6F35 transmission. The last dealership even called Ford Corporate in Dearborn, MI. A Ford Service agent in Dearborn told me very nicely that there was nothing that could be done to help this situation. Its simply the way the transmission works.

Basically, the transmission functions as expected means that they know its a piece of junk, but they are unwilling or can't do anything about it. I'm never, repeat NEVER buying a Ford again.

Fusion SEL 4cy

  • Automatic transmission

The transmission has always jerked since I got it. I took it to a local dealer once and they did something with the computer, it helped a bit. Now that it's getting colder it's getting worse. It scares me to the point it's going to break and leave me stranded somewhere. I had a couple of gentlemen at another car dealer say this has been an issue with the 2012 transmissions.

Since new, transmission sometimes jerked at slow speed. Driving around in a shopping parking lot, it feels like at times it's slipping. Service rep say that is normal. "Really?" I don't think so Tim. :-)

Purchased car in may 2012. Within 3000 miles started the notorious 6f35 shift flare. Took to dealer & they reflashed computer with updated program. Within 300 miles started harsh downshifting while still flaring when cold. It has been back to dealer 5 times with Rochester Ford holding firm no code no problem. This problem is intermittent but does always get a WTF from passengers in car. Service manager at ROCHESTER FORD even suggested maybe I should just buy a different car. I will but not from any dealership associated with them or Ford Motor Company!

Fusion SEL 3.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 28,000 miles

This issue has actually been occurring since I bought the vehicle.I cannot remember specific dates. As others have said, it occurs more frequently when cold. But even now in the summer it will happen. The first few shifts will be jerky, sometimes significantly jerky. To the point you think something is going to fall out. I have been told that I didn't give it ample time to warm up. Another lady at work has the same model and year fusion I do and we have talked about the same thing occurring. Now with the 2013's catching fire I am more concerned about this engine. I does not make me feel safe in this car, I felt more safe in my 13 year old minivan! I will be taking it back in until I can get a fix for this.

Fusion SE 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 200 miles

Tranny was shifting hard and erratically. Went through seeking behavior on 3rd shift around 3.5K RPM.

Took it in and they reprogrammed the computer. May have helped some but still very annoying. Took it back in and they said it was normal.

While reading me the description they said "after checking the fluid level"... They said that they would do that again and check that it was programmed correctly.

Presto, it was 1.5 quarts low.

Seems ok now, but it was worse at cold.

Fusion SEL 2.5L V4

  • Automatic transmission

The car, when accelerating will on occasion not downshift and just dogs out. Other times it will drop into first gear and then you are at about 6000rpm. Usually it is normal in its behavior, but I believe this can be a dangerous situation under the right circumstances.

Fusion SEL V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 4,000 miles

4000 miles, transmission jerks into first and second, bogs down at third, jerks as it down shifts. Dealer re-programed the chip in the trans, said it would be fine. Drove good for 200 miles, same thing is happening again, so back to the dealership again. The dealer had my car for 3 days since Ford Motor Co. does not a lot their dealers loaner cars, I did not have a car for that time. Can't wait to hear the solution this time.
