I have a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT extended cab 4X4 I first started having trouble with the alternator it just stopped working, took to shop and the brushes on it was wore out had the replaced and it lasted 2 days and same problem so had to buy a new alternator at $300 it lasted 4 days took it back to parts store got a replacement and im still using it but it still isn't working as good as it should got stranded at 1230 am beside road with my daughter with me the first time, and when that happened that when my od light started flashing and the transmission wouldn't shift into the right gears had to manually shift it to get it to move took to shop noone could find the problem even putting it on the computer no codes was found ended up getting stranded again when train completely quit pulling had towed to shop and had to buy another train at $600 and that is 3 weeks pay for us but its the only vehicle we have so had to get it fixed looked to see if any recalls have been issued for this but none have but have seen many many complaints I think Ford need to looking to this problem soon, it could cause an accident and someone could get seriously hurt. Thanks have ready everyone's issues and have alot of the same with my truck.

In October of 2006 the automatic transmission in my 2000 4X4 Ford Ranger began to not engage in park when I would stop and park the truck. The indicator would also not stop on the gear that the truck was in. After checking the transmission selector cable run and adjusting it where it enters the transmission the problem was a little better. In about two weeks the problem began again and I looked at the components I had looked at before and everything was the same. At that time I also got a mirror and light and looked under the dash at the back of the gear selector and saw two star drive screws. I put a star drive on my driver and found both screws turned easily. After tightening the screws the shifting mechanism stayed on each gear as it should have and engaged all gears and park. The problem was fixed. The consequences of this were, that, before it was fixed I would stop the truck "put it in park" get out, and the truck would start rolling. Fortunately, I began using the parking brake before I figured out what the problem was. I only use my truck on rough roads about 5% of the time. Since this part is in a really out of sight place the screws should have some extra locking mechanism or adhesive on them because the consumer or mechanic is not going to look for the problem which is out of sight and in a hard to reach place.

Transmission acted as if in neutral. Had to manually shift down to be able to move vehicle off road. This situation could have presented a real traffic hazard had it occurred when I needed to pull out quickly, or if there were lots of traffic. Researched problem on this site and found service bulletins which mention the problem: 10013414, 10014086 and 10013369.

My 2000 Ranger has just 50K miles, which exceeds the warranty, and already has major transmission problems, which has cost me $3000 dollars to repair. According to the transmission shop whom repaired my transmission, said "the damage did not happen over night; it was due to poor quality parts used by the manufacturer of the transmission. The damage began several thousand miles prior to, then resulted in transmission failure." Being that hundreds of others have experienced the same transmission problems as I have, and that it is obvious that Ford is aware of these transmission problems, which explains their sad warranties, and continues to use them in their new vehicles, which will lead to more robbing of innocent consumers, Ford needs to repair the problems at no cost to the consumer, and or stop using such poor quality parts in their products. Since these transmission problems began at the mfg. Level, I believe that Ford should reimburse the cost to repair my transmission.

At less than 36,000 miles, and at just 4 yrs old, the transmission needed to be completely rebuilt and a celanoid needed to be replaced. In addition, I have had to replace at least 2 sensors. Ford says there is nothing they can do at this time and will not release any data as to how many Ford Ranger have required the transmission to be rebuilt or replaced. In addition, Ford will not comment as to whether the issue is even being investigated by the engineers. I feel that this is an issue that Ford is aware of but is not willing to correct at this time because they are not required to by law.

This is the same complaint as I found on your site under ref: 718274, filed Feb 3, 2002. Transmission issues include clunking into gear, hesitation. I just purchased this used, had brakes, belts (4X in repair!!) and rear drive shaft replaced. Dealer refuses to listen to issue. Filed complaint with Ford to no avail. Asked for $ back, refused. Still in dispute, vehicle not fixed.

Ranger 4WD 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,000 miles
At 50,000 miles, my Ford Ranger began experiencing a slipping transmission and failed to start. The problems were diagnosed as a failed gasket in the transmission, and a failed valve body part in the motor (which was fixed with an "update kit"). the dealer also indicated that the ball joints were beginning to fail, and a front pinion seal had begun to leak.

We were on vacation in August, 2001.odometer was approx.7,000mi. Coming down a steep, winding road in the Sierra we put the transmission in low gear only to discover that there was no effect. It was as though the transmission were in neutral. The dealership has verified the problem and says it is a torn gasket. Ford has issued a tsb # 14405 acknowledging the defect but saying they don't have a permanent solution. The dealer will change the gasket but it may fail at any time. What use is a truck that we can't haul anything in without risking our lives?
