CarComplaints.com Notes: Most people need a car where the coil springs don't puncture or shred tires while driving. The Taurus fails in that respect.

The 1999-2003 Ford Taurus has a huge problem with coil springs breaking, which can puncture or even shred tires while driving.

The US government spent THREE YEARS (2008-2011) investigating the 2002-2003 Taurus coil springs. Although Taurus/Sable from earlier years were recalled, ultimately the NHTSA did not force a recall. They determined that because there had been no deaths & very few bad crashes & injuries, the broken coil springs defect was no big deal & not a safety defect. Tell that to all the owners who had close calls...

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus, when my 16 year old son was driving the car, the front coil spring broke and blew out his tire while he was driving, this also happen to my 2000 Ford Taurus years ago. I assumed this was a recall due to the 2000 Ford had the same problems. I checked and my 2002 is not on the recall list for the coil spring because you changed manufactures & not enough people complained about this problem. I'm not impressed with the Ford Taurus at this point. I have 3 of them 2000, 2002 and 2007 Taurus I also have a Ford 500. I have always had faith in your tauruses until this has happen 2 times now and it is going to cost me almost $1000 due to the fact I now should replace the struts along with the coil springs and buy a new tier. I would like to know why just because you changed manufactured you would not honor a problem you have had on the Ford Taurus several years in a row. I thank god my son was not driving fast when the coil spring broke and blew the tier out, he is 16 years old we bought this car because we thought it would be a safe car for him.

I own a 2002 Ford Taurus that I purchase new. On 0202/10 my wife was backing the car out of the garage when heard a load bang, and the car suddenly stop. She noticed the front tire was flat, and when I removed the tire I notice that the front coil spring was broke. I'm very happy she wasn't driving 55 mph at the time it broke. I did some checking and found out there was a recall on this coil spring thru 1999 to 2001. I call the Ford Motor Co. That they still have a major safety issue with this car, but they didn't seem to care.

2002 Ford Taurus, left front coil spring snapped while parked, puncturing a hole in the tire. Fortunately while parked and not on the interstate. It's my understanding the Ford has a recall for the same problem on the 2000 and 2001 models but not on the 2002 model. Of course my concern is this happening on the interstate and the outcome being severe. The left front strut assembly has been replaced with salvage yard parts. This was done before I was aware of this being an issue in prior years.
