Exactly one year ago I had new seals put in my PTU since I had AWD on my SHO. The new seal kit from ford did not work and once again I am leaking fluid. This is a serious condition, according to both the dealer and the repair shop, as this can cause the rear wheel to seize while driving if this is not detected early enough. Thankfully the seals are under warranty since they were just put in last year. Hopefully this will stay fixed this time.

ptu seal failure causing leak onto exhaust

Last month I started smelling burning transmission fluid in my air vents. I took the car in for an oil change and the mechanic said the smell was coming from transmission fluid dripping on the exhaust. I took the car in the other day to a transmission specialist. After going through the car he sais the gasket between the PTU and transmission was bad and that the seal on the right drive shaft was also bad. To fix this issue he had to order several different seal kits.

He said that ford knew the design was faulty. In most AWD cars there are more seals between the PTU and transmission. This system has significantly less seals. The unit also sits just inches under the exhaust so it heats up quite a bit. I was told he has had to fix a lot of these between 80,000-100,000 miles. I guess ford fixed the design issue in the newer models and then offered a new service pack if these had to be replaced. Unfortunately the powertrain warranty expires at 60,000 miles. I am surprised Ford did not issue a recall on this because if the PTU was to fail the back wheels could potentially freeze up while driving which would not be a good situation.
