The weather was cold...well below zero (about 10-15 degrees F below zero). The car had been sitting outdoors. The defroster was running to keep the vehicle windshield clear. About 10 minutes into the ride, the windshield spontaneously cracked all the way across from driver's to passenger's side, a distance of over 4 feet. There was no nick or stone chip in the windshield prior to the crack. It did not put glass inside the vehicle compartment, but could potentially have impaired vision enough to cause an accident.

Ford Taurus X 2008 sel the date entered is approximate, as this situation happened last winter and now this winter whenever the temperature is below 10 degrees F. the Taurus X is a good vehicle except for a very serious safety concern. The windshield fluid will not work when the temperature falls below about 10 degrees F. this causes a very serious safety situation on the highway and interstate when snow or road spray, salt, etc. Causes reduced visibility on the windshield. This is not due to the fluid itself, but is a flaw in the little sprayer apparatus. We have owned Ford for many years and have never experienced this problem on any other model. Ford told me it is a new manufacturer of these parts and that it isn't a problem----trying to blame it on the fluid freezing, but this is not the situation as the same fluid does not freeze in the other vehicles. This should be a safety recall. It is now the second winter I have been experiencing this situation.
