The 1993 Tempo I was driving (owned by my boss) failed to start intermittently. It was a known problem to my boss, and he told me to just put the car in neutral if the car didn't start in park.
He had the transmission safety switch replaced with another one (used, from the wrecking yard). It lasted for about 6 months, and started doing the same thing again. Obviously, it didn't pay to install a used part, and it must be a manufacturing defect or design flaw of some sort.
In fact, just about everything electrical in this car is failing (either solid or intermittently). The guys who designed the electrical system either had a very tight budget to work with or they just didn't care about quality. :-(
