Windstar LX 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 110,000 miles

We purchased this van, and seeing this site, I am learning our problems our your problems. Tonight, our van OD light blinked and the torque was pulling an elephant. I pulled over and there the van peacefully rested. And rested. And rested. Still resting in someone's front yard, off the road. Our AC blows hot which is fun when my wife's 11 year old daughter is sitting in the back and it is roasting weather. Not so funny when I turn the AC on and our 4 month old is sitting in the back and I don't realize I have the heat blowing through the coldest AC. Have had a problem with the interior lights. I read a fix to just pour in more transmission fluid. I am trying tomorrow. Will post back if it works.

Rear A/C blows heat while front works fine. I'm thinking of replacing the rear blower/heater switch. Any other ideas? Any help on replacing this myself?

Windstar GL 3.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100,000 miles

I had this problem starting when my Windstar was new - a month out of the lot. I had heat on in the front and was driving along happy and toasty only to realize that my newborn was screaming because the air conditioning was blasting on her in the rear. The same went in reverse - I'd turn on the air and heat would blow in the back.
I had a warranty fix two times - and the problems kept occurring. Finally, at about 70k to 100k miles I took it to the dealership and told them I wanted it fixed right b/c they had tried 2x under warranty and it clearly hadn't worked. They agreed to split the cost with me and I only paid half of the repair- I remember it being several hundred dollars, but since my van was getting up in miles I thought it was worth it.

My van blows hot air through the bottom vents even though I have the A/C turned on. Normally, when the A/C is on, cool air only comes from the upper vents and when heat is on, it only blows through the lower vents. Now, even with A/C on, in only get lower vent heat. Getting into summertime, this certainly won't do for our vacation to the beach. I am researching a solution, but does anyone have any ideas?

Apparently the problem has existed for a while, but my wife didn't bother telling me. It's a real pain, especially since we're getting ready to leave on vacation in 3 weeks. I turned the A/C on high recirc (very cold up front) and the sidewall vent right behind the driver's seat was blasting away very hot air. Any ideas???

The a/c was coming out the defrost vents. I used a vacuum pump to test the vacuum control flaps that open to change where the air goes. All were working. I started looking for a vacuum leak. Found the switch in the front console that controls the rear heat and air was the problem. Replaced the switch with one purchased at an auto parts store (non-dealer). All is cool now!!!!

The problem is probably vacuum related but I have not been able to find a vacuum diagram

The rear a/c unit just blows hot air through the bottom vents. The pipes under the car leading to the rear unit are ice cold. I am at a loss. I am sure it is a common problem with these ford vans and am sure that I'll be ripped off if I brought it to the dealership.
